One solid day of work and the spiral staircase made from cut logs is finally done and secured with a custom platform . Amazing difference in the movement and weight transfer, from securing the opposite end.

They used to put random uneven heights in the rise in the steps in castles in the dark stairwells. When attacking parties would chase a person in a dark stairwell, and they did not know where the " stumble steps" were well you can guess what would happen. You will be safe from attackers. The residents of the castles knew where the steps were.

I remember dragging rolls of carpet and pad up spiral stairs to install in lofts back in the day, and wrapping pie shaped steps with it. Ugh. I think it left a bad taste in my mouth for spiral staircases.............however.............that staircase is absolutely beautiful. Very nice job.

Very nice job on staircase, that can be a centre piece of the house, if you want to have that banding tighter you can use black steel strapping that has clips and a tightener and then you crimp the clip with a tool, you can get them pretty tight as they’re normally used on steel coils or skids, you can Google it, continued success Sincerely Fabrizio
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Bryan made a jig tool for the banding and it was really quite tight, but the wood dried a bit more since then. He just doesn't like the look of it now.
@fama57363 жыл бұрын
Colorado Mountain Living alright sounds good, just don’t want it to split, my parents home have a complete square log tree running over the fireplace the full width of the room and they decided one day to completely paint it white where it was natural open pore wood before, that log shrunk down at least 3 or 4 inches on each side because the moisture wasn’t able to get into the wood and it completely dried out, just mentioning it so that maybe you oil the wood and possibly don’t put anything that’s going to seal it completely from the humidity in the room so you don’t get massive contraction, just relaying some past experiences, truly looks great want to keep it looking that way, if you haven’t decided on the railing also still think some thick cabling that goes up to the platform would give support on the steps and something to grab going down or up the steps then you can run a rigid piece of whatever you’d like attached to the cabling in a spiral going down the steps, just some ideas whatever you do I’m know will be fantastic, continued success Fabrizio

Looks great you guys! $20 says you already have half a dozen projects you want to do after this.
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you could say that. Basically the 3 big ones are 1. finish the closet 2. install radiant heat into the bathroom and kitchen area 3. build the steam shower. BUT all that comes after installing the railing, which I hope can be done before the end of the month.
@hisimagenme3 жыл бұрын
I love the ascetic of the spiral stair cases! They are so nostalgic. But practically speaking, I'm seriously concerned... how are you possibly going to get any furniture up there through that? Teehee, likely you've already worked that out and I've missed some video where that got explained. Looks awesome and the work is excellent for sure! Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see how the railing comes together! Smiles and blessings...
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, there is no carrying furniture up or down them. But, the workaround is to look to the center beam in the ceiling.. It's relatively easy to attach a ratchet strap/pulley system there and hoist objects up and down, there is nothing obstructing from below the loft railing. Although we are using the loft as a bedroom currently, it's not really designed to be one. When we finish the rest of the house and are ready to move the bed down to it's intended location (current living area) THAT will be an interesting video to watch!
@CJBouhlal3 жыл бұрын
Remarks Your Stairs System is Anchored only at two points - The Concrete at the Bottom, which is Solid and Very Reliable - The Loft Platform, which should have a Metal Plate sandwiched in the middle You still need to Anchor your States System to the Middle Floor, but it doesn't have to be a Platform You need to use more Metal Rods strategically to add more stability The Railing is of course as safety component for the people using the Stairs.. A MUST Your Stairs look very nice, they're Rustic at the same time Modern The Elements used are Rustic as well the Colors, but the Steps design is Modern You need to add as much Stability and safety components to it, as you can I'm sure if you paid for them it would have cost you thousands, but you probably haven't spent that much building them, minus your labor. Great Achievement, just keep in mind the Safety Factor which in my opinion necessitates more Structural stability You're almost there, though they're functional now 👍
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! And they actually are anchored at 3 points. the mid floor does have a platform, it's quite a few videos back. but basement, 1st floor and second floor are all anchored to steel. I think we'll get a bit more once the railing is added as well. Thanks so much!
@Clothis643 жыл бұрын

Great video guys....was there a reason to step off on the right side......I would have done a dry fit and tried both sides just to be sure
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you have to have an opening to the stairs below that gives 6 ft 6 inches of clearance. If you move it to the left, the stairs are higher on that side and you don't get the head clearance.

with the two of you, great ideas just keep coming and coming. two quick questions Amy. Brian said that he would like to replace the bands around the centers with leather straps. now you being the arts and crafts person, if you soak leather in water, will it shrink when it dries. if it does, you can soak the leather strips, wrap them around the center pieces, than as they dry, they will tighten up around the wood, and hold them together much stronger. now my other question is about your puppy. the pillow he lays on outside, is it waterproof. being it is out there in the rain and snow, it might start to get mildew, and the dog in laying on it. that wouldn't be good for him. i am a dog lover, and have two small dogs, and trust me, they live better than i do. oh yea, the upstairs landing, is a fantastic idea.
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's a great point about the leather. The furniture is on the verge of being tossed in the dump, it probably won't hold up another winter & year of sun. Things seem to sun rot quicker than anything else.
@raymondrussell5003 жыл бұрын
Carry your center pole to ceiling on the third floor. It will help stabilize entire stairs. Fasten to ceiling. Just a suggestion.
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but since the stairs don't extend past the platform, there is practically zero weight beyond where they are secured to the platform now.

Looks good The Landing could have been twice as big

You need to make sure you have the 6'6" clearance for the step below, so making it bigger, would have eliminated that clearance.

@robertlong90293 жыл бұрын
The way that you get the exact tread height is to get the overall height in inches and divide it by 7 if you have a remainder add one more step then take the number of stairs and divide into the overall height and that will give you the exact tread height. You can not have more than a 3/16 difference in tread height. I hope this helps someone.

...have to interject ,, headspace ,, unless changed ,, has always been 80" ,, (6ft 8in.) ,,not 6'6" .... treads from top to bottom within 3/8" max....measured from finished landing to finished landing.... 8"+/-- tread top to tread top equal overall...under 4" spacing anywhere on stair system ...again ,,check with your county inspector.. and save any aggravation of having to redo ... ..unless changed ,, check with your county inspector....built stairs and finish work in Colo.for 25 years...
