Finishing the Aprilia Scarabeo 500 plus testride

This video is the end of the Aprilia Scarabeo 500 maintenance series. I still am not finished since I will have to redo the front end. I will install new head bearings and balance the front wheel. Perhaps even have to install a new tyre. Not sure of that yet. Other than that, I am really happy with the end result which is a really smooth running motorscooter ready to be soled.

Hi, my Tiva has the same wobbles especially when decelerating. Spoke to my dealer when brought it 6 years ago and he said that the front end is very light. Engine is attached to the rear wheel, petrol tank is in middle of the chassis so apart from the little radiator and small coolant reservoir there is no weight on the front wheel. Indeed, when decelerating I put more weight on my feet (like when you prepare to stand up) and wobble goes away. Correct tyre pressure and wheel balance is essential to keep all in control as well. I took my scooter to a trip of about 3500km in Western Australia and this scooter is a grand tourer for sure. Did 750 km in one day and could do some more, that comfortable it is. Engine is 462cc, very smooth and has great torque. Had no wooble during the trip because I had a backpack above fuel tank with 2l water bottle, food and other stuff so about 4kg made all the diference. I guess if an external front end luggage rack would be attached (similar to what Vespa offers) it will fix the wobble. Thank you for your video and efforts in editing .

Thanks for this series - I just picked up a blue '08 just like yours with 14k miles. It isn't perfect cosmetically but it's in pretty good shape mechanically. Would love to see your front end teardown, that's an area of my bike I haven't looked at yet.

@@zaingazi3548 I love mine and have put 15k miles on it. This is a very fun machine and someone who does their own work and has means of backup transportation would probably also enjoy it. If that doesn't describe you then I wouldn't recommend it or any other scooter more than 10 years old. In the US it was not a big seller and while parts are available for it, for the past year or so they're taking a long time to source from Piaggio through the large US Aprilia dealer (AF1Racing in Austin). This may be a function of Piaggio, not this scooter. I've ended up sourcing parts from Europe and the shipping is expensive. Taking the elaborate plastics off to get to the guts of the scooter is a pain in the neck compared to Japanese/Taiwanese machinery designed to be easier to repair - but that's part of the Scarabeo look. I do all my own work and the scooter is not my primary means of transportation, so having it in my garage waiting for parts is not a big deal. The engine has been very solid but at 14 years old components like some plastics, front fork seals, wheel bearings, spark plug wires, steering head bearings, and light housings have gotten old or beaten up. Expected consumables like belts, rollers, and tires have been easy to get. My sense is that this would all be quite expensive to get fixed at shop rates, but that's the case for any two-wheeler of this age. This series of videos from ChiefPep have been INVALUABLE in understanding how to work my way around the machine.

I would like to see a in depth video on the 500ie valve adjustment. Step by step where I can actually see the process clearly finding the TDC and adjusting each valve where each adjustment can be seen in detail up close. That would be great for us Newbies. Thanks Bam Bam#1 .

Whoa! that handlebar shake thing is nuts. I have a x9 500 and a bv500, basically the same scooters under different names and I havent had that happen on either one... wonder whats so different about the setup on the scarabeo than the other two of the same family.

500 if you use it a lot on the highway. I had them both.

What a pain in the butt to service this bike. What year is the bike? I've seen four different valve gaps so far. My sticker under the seat says .0023 then I took the pad out of the seat and there was another sticker that said .0078. the dealership told me .008. and I downloaded a manual that says .15mm. mine is a 07 500ie and I can't even find a valve gasket for it. I ordered one from the dealership and I've been waiting 3 months for it and it still hasn't come in yet. Does the Atlantic have the same valve cover gasket? If it does what year will fit the 07 500ie?

Hi where and how to find KILOMETER COUNTING SENSOR? Every thing is working including SPEED DISPLAY from 1-160kmh Has it to do with Batterie change?

The odometer is tied to the same magnetic pickup that the speedometer uses on the right of the front wheel by the brake rotor. It tracks the passage of the bolts that attach the brake rotor to the wheel...so they need to be regular steel, not stainless! If the speedometer is working but not the odometer, there is something wrong in the display unit.

Strange air removal procedure. I'd rather open bleeder and pour coolant until it comes from that bleeder. No need to run the engine I guess

Ok. This is how I read it in the Apriia maintenance manual... I guess there are several ways to do it. This btw gave me kind of the same feeling as you would bleed your brakes. After all, it is a pressure system...
