Oh damn the day a Finn didn't switch to English when speaking with me (trying to buy specific concert tickets) I was so proud. Then I realised she had, mid conversation, started to speak in a very standardised way with less cutoff words, less murre accent and more like a TV presenter and I was a bit bummed out but heeey ! Concert tickets bought entirely in Finnish ! It counts !

In Finland we don't have bullshit and what we are saying we really mean that. If american say to us "hi how are you?" We could take it as you're really interesting of me and how I'm doing. For american friend it's small talk and we take it seriously and we might starts talking what all stuff we're going thru in our life. Like "Oh my granny just died a last week, it's so sad because we were really closed and a next saturday would be the funeral day. Do you wanna go?" American friend is like "oh I don't ask how you and your granny are doing😂. It could be a very confusing.

Another American here- great interview. I mean that literally- you asked all the right questions, and getting his reaction to Turkish Pepper was priceless. For those Finns tempted to be apologetic about your English- just remember, it's almost certainly better than the Finnish of whoever you're talking with.

As a finn I feel like if I made up a language I would probably be the best speaker of it in the whole universe... after that thought I might realize that my native language might be as relative as my made-up tongue. I still like my language very much, but Finnish has no major meaning/influence outside Finland. But yeah you probably speak worse Finnish than i do English. And Is this the way we downplay ourselves as a nation? Or is it just me? Or am I just being a dick within the youtube comment section?

@@jerekorva (I don't know why KZfaq waited a week to tell me about your reply) Self-effacing humor is not a bad thing, I do it myself and it's not unpopular in America. Mind you I'm probably as proud of being an American as you are if being a Finn and there's nothing wrong with that either, but the point is that we can pick or mix pride and humility as appropriate, so no, you're not being a dick. You have nothing to be ashamed of- any country that can maintain its identity against both the Nazis *and* the Soviets deserves respect no matter how you might feel you're "downplaying" it.

Finally Finland has opened the borders to Norway :) Now I can again go shopping for dark rye-bread and other food that is impossible to get here in Norway. It also cuts down the driving time to Tromsø from 12 hours to 9 - 10 hours because the roads are much better in Finland with 100km/h speed limit large parts of the way.

Moi, Anni. I have really enjoyed coming across your and Laurri's vlogs. Your interview with Josh brought back many memories of my stay in Pietarsaari from April through June 1980. I was there to pick up a yacht built by Nautor. I had the good fortune to find a room in a student hotel and soon had many friends there. Sauna twice a week .An active social life in town. Rented a bicycle, had a library card, too. My stay in Finland was not my first European experience. I had been a student in Vienna in 1967, I had also lived for extended periods in France and the UK. Also time in South America. I also grew up around Finns in Massachusetts and Maine. My wife is 100% Finnish-American, family name is Laurila. KZfaq has allowed people to meet other people in another culture and finding out we are more alike than different. I watch a lot of European vloggers and am impressed with their world views. Keep up the good work! Moi, moi! Alden Cole

This was fantastic!...and I mean that honestly. Hands down the BEST interview I have ever seen about what it is like to be an American in Finland. The Tykisk Peber segment alone had me crying laughing. I love the stuff but I have tried it on my friends here in the US and his reaction was pretty much spot on for how my friends reacted. The fact that the entire country pretty much is introverted and doesn't do small talk is one of my all time favorite things about Finland.

My favorite Finnish brand is Tikka/Sako. They make rifles, and it worked and shot great right out of the box. Edit: Also, I love an indy computer game called UnReal World that is set in ancient Finnland. Edit #2: On the point of Americans learning languages. The average American does not live close to a country that speaks another language. Maybe learning French to go to French Canada makes sense, but teaching Americans to speak Russian (for example) just wouldnt make sense. "But there are so many Hispanic people in America" you might say. I worked with Mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) at a job for 15 years and they pick up English very quickly. They might want you to learn Spanish, but that is only so that they can get you to teach them English faster. LOL. They want to learn English, in general, and it is seen as an accomplishment for them. Needless to say I speak Spanish, but now that I left that job I no longer use it. I also wanted to mention distances in America. When I was younger, my parents sold their small business and decided to move to another state. While everything was packed in storage and they basically didnt own a house, they planned a massive family trip across the country to the other coast. I plotted some waypoints in google maps to measure the rough distance and it came out to 5701 miles (9175 km). That is just straight line measuring, the road distance was so much more. That was just to see part of America. I think that I have only been to about 35 out of 50 States. The average American could travel their whole lives and never leave the US. And still they wouldnt see it all.

This video was "Okay", haha. I clicked on video thinking no way i'll watch this whole video but ended up watching whole thing. The most interesting part being American was how much longer your daylight is in summer and shorter in winter. I always thought only people living much closer to the north/south pole experienced that or people in northern Alaska but i see now Finland is basically as far north as our Alaska, so that makes sense. But i never been that far north to experience those long or shorter days. I live in Florida so there isn't much difference between winter and summer for daylight.

Anni and Josh: your conversation at the end about American "over-the-top" speech reminded me of when I once acted perhaps more like a Finnish person would at a big American chain restaurant. We were served our food, and it was fine, I had no complaints at all. But the server came back and asked "So is everything exceeding your expectations this evening?!" and like a fool I answered honestly, "well, no, I wouldn't say that, but it MEETS my expectations, it's good, thanks." And then the staff absolutely would NOT leave us alone. They asked how they could improve things, really wanted me to tell them what was wrong. Eventually the manager came over and started the whole line of questions and apologies again, and I really regretted being that honest. I feel bad for anyone from an honest and reserved society like Finland who has to deal with that kind of over-the-top, annoying attention.

I was in finland last summer, mainly Helsinki and Kuusamo, and learned some basic Finnish phrases to say if I ever needed them. Which I didn't as everyone spoke English well enough to be understood. The only non-english language I spoke was German, and that is because an elderly German lady on vacation there didn't speak english, so to help her, I translated her German to English to tell people what she wanted to say at the hotel until her husband came down from their room to help her.

Very interesting to get one American’s perspective on living in a different country. I spent two weeks in Japan and it was rather obvious I was not a local. I had red hair and beard, sort of like Josh’s and I was in an industrial area. Very few English signs anywhere. The local school kids thought it was great to practice their English chatting with me. It was quite an interesting adventure. Keep making “good” videos. ❤️👍

I noticed and find it interesting that even though he's lived in Finland a few years he still pronounces sauna as sawna instead of sowna. I live in upper Michigan and even we pronounce it right.

I think small talk is more of a Midwest/Eastern U.S construct. I moved from Michigan to Arizona, people in Arizona did not small talk very much. Also I have lived in many Asian and African countries and many times when people know you speak English, they want to speak English to practice with a native speaker. I would just tell people I want to practice their language. I want to visit Finland next summer. Thanks for the great interview Anni and Josh!

California has a lot of small talk. But the Wild Western states with a lot of open spaces don't. Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico. Etc. They don't do it very much. NYC Boston Philly also not much. Washington is kind of intellectual and Nordic. It's definitely strongest in the midwest and the south. They'll talk your ears off. There's a Wisconsin KZfaq journalist and comedian Charlie Behrens who makes fun of it all the time and it's hilarious.

it's funny opposed to speaking Finnish to Finnish speakers, when speaking Spanish to Spanish speakers, if you make a mistake, they will correct you right away, sometimes before you finish the sentence! I hadn't considered people not correcting someone out out of politeness!

As a born and bred Minnesotan, we don’t typically say everything is fabulous, awesome, etc. That’s mostly because the state was settled by Germans, Norwegians and Finns. And to be more exact- we’ve retained the cultural norms from the 1800s which are not at all those of Europe today. For example, If you ask someone if they liked something, a typical response here would be “It’s not bad.” I find it interesting that often people from either U.S. coast have a tendency to characterize “American” culture as only one way of being when everyone knows there are regional and multi-cultural differences. I see Europeans making the same generalizations because they either have met Americans who travelled to their country or they visited some popular tourist areas in the U.S.
