Finland struggles with influx of refugees

Finland's government has announced that it will deport 20,000 refugees. Finland has struggled to deal with the number of people heading there. There is unease too among some locals. Some of them have even formed a vigilante group that they say will protect people from refugees.
Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from Kemi in northern Finland.

The reporting is inaccurate. The Finnish government has estimated that out of 30,000 asylum seekers only 10,000 are true refugees, the rest are economic migrants that try to use asylum as a way to move to Europe. Those 20,000 that have come without true refugee status are the ones that will be sent back to their safe countries of origin. Already more than 4,000 Iraqis have voluntarily left the country when they realized that they will not be granted "asylum".

Every time I see these reports, I can't help but raise the question why is there Muslim countries and regions not doing more to accept these refugees. Conversely why are these refugees not opting to move to these regions such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, even regions like Dagestan. These are safe, relatively prosperous regions that should provide the solace they seek that are closer to them, and should be easier to assimilate.

I'm kazakh from Kazakhstan, we are mainly muslim but our country is not Islamic state, we are secular country, and we do revere our national, cultural, traditional values, I don't want representatives of other races/nations coming to my country and living here spreading their cultures, we are seeing how disrespectful non-kazakh people behaving here. I think we have to be more conservative about others.

I was in Finland, Oulou, about 4 years ago and told a Finnish guy this would happen there like it has over here in the UK. He laughed and said I'm crazy.

As a turkish citizen, I and most of my people are sharing same things towards to Syrian refugees. They are getting free money from the state, using our health system for free and after all begging at the streets with their 5 children beside them. I am a non-believer myself and I can not understand someone who ran away from a islamic country to a scandinavian one and keep his culture of dessert beside him. You guys should have more children before its too late

There was no influx what so ever. In 2015 some 32,400 were seeking asylum in Finland but that is a much smaller number than in most EU states, and very few got granted asylum.

@Mary V early 1990s saw much bigger influx and we coped with it better. This influx was tiny as majority of refugees stayed in Southern and Central Europe
