I completely agree with your video. It is not a coincidence that you and I share the same experience, well almost. This is how I would sum up English learning. People who want to learn English seriously must have a passion for English and perseverance because it is a long process, perhaps a struggle for some people. I was in a situation where I was pretty much forced to learn English when I was 14 years old. When my family immigrated to the US, I was too far behind for high school mainly because of the lack of English ability. I was very depressed and I wanted to go back to HK because I missed the life in HK and friends who I had known all my life. But the reality is there is no going back. It took me 2 years to pick myself up and started learning English seriously as I realized this is the only way I could path my way to the future. In retrospect, I have to thank God for giving me the gift in language and a pair of keen ears. I attended ESL classes for two years and I had Mrs. Milton as my teacher who just finished her contract with Beijing University and returned to the US. I had a good start. Mrs. Milton taught me a strong grammar foundation and taught me how to apply verbs and tenses. I followed her for over a year and listened to her advice. Thinking back, English seemed nearly impossible to this young lad, as I was so confused by this language, so much information that I actually had information overload. Which should I focus on; grammar, vocabulary, building sentences, learning the tense, or just learning enough English to survive. Fortunately, either by luck or guidance, I managed to balance the learning paces and my understanding of the language was getting stronger day by day. Again, I felt a force was driving and guiding my learning despite the many obstacles. Another year had gone by, I was beginning to grasp the concepts. At the same time, I came across some publications about English learning which suggested watching documentaries and BBC News. I took the suggestion and started watching Discovery and BBC news on TV with captions; every day for 2 hours. Another year passed by. At that time I already lived in the US for close to 5 years. I was gaining confidence and I had also overcome the fear of speaking. I found mimicking the speaking patterns and the intonation of the narrator or dialogs is extremely helpful. My senses to sound helped me tremendously. Fast forward, I got my degree in Electrical Engineering and have worked in this field for 20 years. During my career, I had to write a lot of technical documents, operating specifications, and training manuals which required precise technical terms and writing skills. As the years have gone by, the more I learned, the more I appreciate and love this language. At this point, I am doing some free tutoring online for ESL learners and study linguistic.

可惜我唔太鐘意看英文書，只喜歡看中文書，所以中文作文做得好好，但英文作文就麻麻地

芬尼，很讚同你的經驗分享，很讚。我兒子小時也跟你一樣很愛看迪士尼卡通片-他看Ｃａｒｓ，一直重復看上30次吧!　有時關掉電腦螢幕，只聽聲音也知道說甚麼，情節到那里了（因他要做功課，不給他看，只給他聽）他那時小２。１１歲帶他來紐西蘭書，很快就能跟洋人同學打成一片，很快就適應這里的生活。只要用心看一套自已喜歡的電影對學習語言真的有很大的幫助，希望我的分享有用。
