She puts in deed so much emphasis on that word, she could basicaly pronunuence it kooooorkmaaaktaaaaannnsaa. but the way she sings it is definitely extraordinary, and well reflects the emotions. As a turkish language speaking person i find it so much more tense then a quick "korkmaktansa". for example when we get angry we could spell out every syllable one by one like "gi de cek sin" instead of 'gideceksin'

Since in Turkish suffixes (and clitics) at the end of a word create a meaning stand for a whole sentence in another language. I liked the moment she thought each suffix as another word because they function as they are another word.

WOW.......Who is this vocal wonder??? I was totally captivated with her first word. This is just the kind of music i listen to late at night, loud to hear every detail. To hear a story told with music served just the way i like it. When i mentioned Floor and GLS i was thinking not of the likeness of the singing or the song but the divine ability to bring us into their arena and let us feel as they intend and where there are no barriers like language or taste ect. Just pure connection. I havent time to explore the music i want to but i have time for this. Anna you help so much to identify the uniqueness of such singers and song, i am grateful for that , for you. Thank you, today will be a good day.

@Cheeseistooexpensive
@Cheeseistooexpensive 8 ай бұрын
Hi sis/bro/world citizen etc.. I am a native Turk and music lover, came to give inside information :) This song is not a "traditional oriental..." , since there is no eastern-specific chords. Quick Fact: when it comes to Turkey/Türkiye, thinking oriental things is a misassumption about Turks, actually. We don't understand why you keep putting Arabic songs when you talk about tr in documentaries. We don't listen them; we don't even understand the language 🤦Turks are not middle eastern and not European (or both, long story). Turks are Turks and they have lands in both sides; so, they have both culture in their music and they use whatever culture they want! 😄🤗Also, Turks have another card: Modern Turkish. An ancient asian (turkish) language modernized and combined with French and Arabic words. Today's tr uses "modern turkish" ; which is more like Japanese, based on both grammar structure and pronunciation. ( sounds freaking awesome and freaking weird, I know.😁) So because of modern turkish, there might have been some traditional Asian oriental chords and instruments..? But nah, there isn't in this song. So, what is this? This is pure Turkish Metal 🌟

Ahmed Ertegun, Turkish producer, who was the owner of Atlantic records signed contract with Şebnem Ferah years before he signed the contract with Evanescence. Unfortunately Şebnem dropped off the contact as she lost her father at the earthquake in 1999. She would have won many Grammy awards... Google this and learned when people compare her with Evanescence. So there was Şebnem first.

The part where she does "vocal cry", is also the part of the song where she sings about how she is crying. She says: What you see is what flows down my cheek What's really inside me is a sea in which I swim. Implying the magnitude of the pain she is in. And I think that shows how thoughtful and sentient she is. Everything is on spot and perfectly arranged in her performances.

Anna at 13:39 she is spelling the word "Korkmaktansa" (meaning rather than being afraid). Spelling in Turkish is different than in English. We dont spell words letter-by-letter one syllable is multiple letters most of the time. So she is dividing the word in to "Kork-mak-tan-sa" and creating a captivating atmosphere.

3:23 What you identified as melisma is the result of two fun features of the Turkish language; aglutination and vowel harmony. The words you noticed, I think, are "içinde yüzdüğüm", meaning, "in which I swim". Yüz- is the root verb. The remainder are suffixes indicating tens, aspect, modality and conjugation. And each suffix gets its vowel modified to harmonize with the vowel of the root verb. (Having fun yet?) So, although she sounds like she is singing a single syllable, while moving between notes, she in fact is singing three syllables. Also, without having a background in music theory or even a firm command of the Turkish music catalog, I will add, yes, melismas are common in Turkish music, independently from the situation mention above. I even remember a joke about Turkish notes being written very largely so as to cover the entire staff, so that the singer can "melisma" the crap out of them.

She has great control over her voice and registers and tonal qualities. Classical-style head voice, the ethnic melismatic sections, the mix belt, the weightier low section, the articulation. I was really curious to hear her singing extensively in her lower range. 5:56 I was really imagining a high, virtuosic, electric guitar solo riding atop this steady march o the orchestra and the band. Your comment about her boldness to just come in with that belt was also so true. When you've been quiet vocally for a while while the music goes on, there's a need for preparation to connect back on the next phrase, especially if the composition is changing under you.

I 100% agree with you there when you say it's very smart musically. Everything has an intention in this relatively simple but strong composition. That part where you reacted at 4:54 for example, she sings " those you see are the ones running down my cheeks, But actually, there is a sea inside me which I swim in" (talking about her tears) and then orchestra comes in with guitar drawing a picture of inner conflict as a stormy sea. She lets out a strong cry fighting it. Those fries coming out showing struggle and at the very end everything ends with a sigh of relief or espousal.

Çocukluğumdan beri dinlerim hiç böyle bir detayın olduğunu fark edememişim. Şebnem Ferah da Tarkan Gözübüyük de ikisi de ayrı ayrı bir deha be... sen de öyle. konserdeki diğer şarkılarda böyle detaylar mevcut mu peki ?
@Quiescent_Pandemonium
@Quiescent_Pandemonium 9 ай бұрын
@@msmtunaTabii mevcut.

I really loved this reaction video. Also I learned some new things about vocals. 😊 Thank you for this reaction. Also for your request asking someone to translate the words at 13:49 of this video: Kork-Man-Tan-Sa korkmaktansa instead of being afraid. Please other Turkish commenters correct me if I'm wrong in the interpretation. I think that word has a strong meaning. She's basically saying instead of being afraid, I am standing on my own, inside of this confusion/filth/fog. I think it's a very strong, and also lonely statement. Anyway here is my attempt at translating the song for you line by line. Bu kalabalığın içinde (in this crowd) Yapayalnız hissetmektense (instead of feeling so alone) Dünyanın bir ucunda (in a corner of the world) Tek başımayım (I am on my own) Kir göstermeyen renkleriniz (Your colours which don't show your filth) Sizin olsun, korkmaktansa (you can keep it/they are yours, rather than fear/instead of being afraid) Bulanıklığın tam içinde (in the middle of this filth/dirt/fog) Bir başımayım (I am all on my own) Benim belki de ( maybe I have) Gizli bir bildiğim var (a secret I've known) Elbette ağlarım (of course/surely I do cry) Benim can kırıklarım var (I have alot of broken soul/life pieces/heartbreaks) Senin gördüğün (what you see is) Yanağımdan süzülenler (flowing down the sides of my face/cheeks) Asıl içimde (actually inside of me) İçinde yüzdüğüm bir deniz var... (There is an ocean that I am swimming in) (Chorus above repeats twice more ) Enjoy ❤

Thank you for yet another great analysis. Here is the translation ( from lack of any rhyme, you can see that I’m no poet :D ) Within this horde Instead of feeling all alone At the end of the world I’m on my own. Keep your dirt-free colors Instead of being afraid In the middle of this indistinctness I’m on my own. (This verse is the one you said might be important) Perhaps secretly I know something Of course I cry For I have shards of life (there is a wordplay here in Turkish, instead of shards of glass[cam], she says shards of life[can], might not be meaningful in English, it’s a good one in Turkish, though) All you can see are Those running down my cheeks Inside me though There is a sea in which I swim.

Belki sadece "bulanıklık" kelimesinin mecazi anlamının direkt düz çevirisi yerine İngilizce'de aynı anlamı yine mecazen verecek "bulanıklık" karşılığı başka bir kelime bulunabilirdi, ondan da emin değilim, pat diye aklıma gelmedi, belki "haziness" olabilirdi. çok da önemli değil. @annavaskelainen thank you for featuring our rock Queen Şebnem Ferah. Probably you now learned that she composed this song herself. She is a world class and wrote/composed so many good songs which are like you said "epic". These type of musicians make history with their performances and music and we're proud that we've one of those.

I love this song. Thank you very much for the analysis originally called "cam kırıklar" (glass shards) in Turkish. "Cam" and "Can" are similar in writing. Sebnem Ferah played with words here and made "Can kırıkları" (I have got shattered lives) (in meaning of heartbreak) Translation of song lyrics In this crowd Rather than feeling all alone At one end of the world I'm all alone Your colors that don't show dirt Let them be yours, rather than fearing Exactly inside the haziness I'm all alone maybe Know something secretly Of course I may cry Because I have my heartbreaks The things you saw That shed through my cheeks Actually inside me There is a sea that I swimm that inside In this crowd Rather than feeling all alone At one end of the world I'm all alone I, maybe Know something secretly Of course I may cry Because I have my heartbreaks

the lyrics during the vocal cry are actually about her crying: what you see are the ones that run down my cheeks really inside of me there is a sea in which I swim. kork-mak-tan-sa is a single word in Turkish meaning instead of being afraid. btw finnish and turkish are coming from the same Uralic linguistic root. there are apparently some similarities in grammar and how to make sentences although words are not that similar. :)

The tempo of this song is this and it has been kept at a constant tempo as it is a collaborative work with the orchestra. It's going strong at a certain pace. The depth of depressive feelings can be conveyed in this way.
