Lyrics:
Every single night
I endure the flight
Of little wings of white-flamed
Butterflies in my brain
These ideas of mine
Percolate the mind
Trickle down the spine
Swarm the belly, swelling to a blaze
That's where the pain comes in
Like a second skeleton
Trying to fit beneath the skin
I can't fit the feelings in
Every single night's alight with my brain

Dude, everyone in the 90's indie music scene are always ahead of their time. Beck, Portishead, Bjork, Tori Amos, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, Lisa Loeb, Slowdive, Fiona Apple etc. They always make songs that sounds like they've released it just yesterday.

Can you beleive the idle wheel is from 2012 ? You may listen to "Valentine", "Werewolf" and "Anything we want" twice an hour everyday, seems like time has no influence on the songs. I don't know how she does. that's why I call her a Magician :p

When you deeply hurt a brilliant child, a deeply beautiful soul, a complex being, this is what you get. She is beautiful beyond any time, and her pain is our substance, but she didn't deserve it, and I have loved her since I was 11 years old, when I first heard her voice, when she told me the world is bullshit. She is the only one of her kind.

@@aarondavid5866 Respectfully, you're wrong. Some may not be able to get it out but for the ones that find a way, their work just tends to be pretty dark. I've personally known people who had been abused as children and read their poetry or other types of writings and it was bleak but still very creative.

I don't think I will ever meet someone who likes Fiona Apple. I've introduced her to literally everyone I know, but nobody seems to be interested. It bothers me for some reason because she is such an amazing artist with such little appreciation and recognition. I have noticed that nobody actually likes the music I listen to. Oh well.

Fidessa Isiko I've met a few, we're usually just not terribly outspoken about it. There are some of us who love music so much that we consider it "special" and tend to protect it from other's judgement...

demoncleaner80 That's what I am beginning to be like. I usually love to share the music I listen to but it seems that people never like it, and that really affects me for some reason. It would be great to encounter someone who appreciates all kinds of music, as I love music a lot.

Fidessa Isiko I can relate to how you feel. Music is more to me than just what others think it is, to me it is a special way of expression. When there is something you just cant seem to tell someone yet a song tells your story, you start to hold onto it more emotionally. I think that's why I feel the same way, because judging the artist or song is like judging yourself, but that's me.
@bbfunky1

Juan C. That is exactly it! I thought I was alone on this and just being ridiculous, but it is somewhat comforting knowing that I'm not the only one. You have just explained exactly how I feel.

Fidessa Isiko I'm glad, it is nice to know that another person feels the same way too! Music means a lot to me and is like an out let that explains who I am as a person. Fiona is just another one of those amazing artists that sings and speaks for me.

The main reason why I listen to her is because her music is her. She doesn't try to please anyone. She writes what her mind tells her to and puts it to notes beautifully. She has a slightly different voice and a different approach in each of her songs. If you pay attention to detail, her songs are hard to compare to anyone else's. It's easy to say it's not your "type of music"... but you can't deny the fact that she's a genius with lyrics.

The most powerful line from any song I’ve ever heard is in this song “my hearts made of parts from all that’s around me and that’s why the devil just can’t get around me”. That line is so powerful it’s spiritual, it’s talking divinity and unity and how those things overpower the darkest aspects of ourselves. It’s love transmuting darkness into light and letting that be your guide so that you can keep going the journey. Don’t give up, people love you.

I have never commented on a youtube video. Yet. It's 3 am and all I want is to drive a stake through my skull. A thin skewer that would slide through me like a shish-kabob. Listening to Fiona doesn't take away this urge, but it provides me some tiny feeling of solace. I am not alone on this rock. It's true, I'll never sing like FIona. My roommates are probably perturbed by my tinny warbling, alone and drunk and full of feeling. Mental health is different for everyone. Yet Fiona has so succinctly described my colliding and opposing feelings of anxiety and depression in one beautiful desolate song. Goddamn I'm drunk and there is no way this is coherent, but I love you Fiona, and at least for tonight, your words and voice have made existence worth it.

For someone who has never left a comment you are strikingly adept at it. You formulate your words into description that conveys your point and your plight in a manner that is complimentary to your imagination and ability to paint ideas and shadow thoughts in a way few are able to with words they are given. I guess I am sayin I think ya write words real real nice and stuff.

one of the most underrated performers of the last 30 years, i keep going back to his song in awe of just how wonderful it is. If music was based on capturing the essence of an emotion, it is a wonderfully melodic and vocally raw interpretation of ones internal struggle with depression, melancholy, insomnia. Her music helps so many people.

Fiona Apple is a true child of Generation X. She stayed in that alt artistry, not commercialized after her first hit album, told everyone in the industry is bullshit. she did it her way, and Gen Z might not get her because tiktok music is overproduced and manufactured to sell, the profit motive of tubes.

It blows my mind that the majority of the people commenting on this are focusing on her appearance. Anyway, I think Fiona Apple is one of the most brilliant song writers out there. She is incredibly passionate and poetic. Her music has helped me get through some shit and I've been listening to her for years. To the people focusing on her flaws: get over yourselves. EVERYONE has flaws. No one is perfect. People battle with shit in their lives. Imagine what Fiona goes through on a daily basis. People always making negative remarks about her physique. No one should have to deal with that. Just keep your negative comments away. Nothing good comes from it. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Dude you guys the second marked spot on the French globe is SAN ONOFRE (nuclear boobies power plant) just as she sings about her breasts breaking open. That added to the occult symbolism (bull horns, octopus, beast out of the sea, intersecting points on the earth) with the knowledge that Fiona's name is not APPLE (eve bit the forbidden APPLE) and actually from a long line of vaudeville performers and its enough to make me want to rebuke all my false idols.

Not that anyone asked, but here's my interpretation of the video (not just the song but the visuals of the music video itself): The first thing i notice is that there are golden threads every where. At one point they are connected to her limbs like a marionette, controlling her. But I think the meaning has to do with the motif of the bull and the ancient Greek myth about Ariadne's thread. In the story, the thread helps Theseus to escape from the labyrinth (maze) and the Minotaur within (creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man). In the video she is seen in bed with a man who has the head of a bull. The threads through out the video allude to her thoughts and emotions being a maze from which she can't escape. By the end of the video, she has excepted this as she warms up to the Minotaur in bed. The Snails and turtles obviously correlate directly to the lyrics of the song in which she talks about the shell and her fragility. ("My breast's gonna bust open, The rib is the shell, And a heart is the yolk, And I just made a meal for us both to choke on") The Giant Octopus terrorizing the beautiful city of Paris at night, is her uncontrollable thoughts terrorizing her brain at night. At one point she is playing with a hula dancing doll, and the video cuts to her dressed as the hula dancer which again represents being handled or controlled by her thoughts like a puppet, instead of visa versa. Her thoughts are continually portrayed by water, often showing her swimming through them (upside down to add to the alienation). At 2:30 she is wearing perfect, white gloves and looking into the aquarium as the golden thread taunts her with the idea of escape.

I also feel the theme of trauma is transformed in the Minotaur motif. The skeleton on the floor she struggles against is a literal hint to her trauma as well as the lyrics, and she accepts monstrous or strange things in her life because she has seen all the range of living creatures and accepts the ones she can relate to

Outstanding!! I absolutely love this song. I can't and don't understand all of the negativity some of you have for her whatever the reason. She's extremely musically talented, very intelligent, passionate, sensitive, poetic, physically gorgeous, and simply makes music that touches her soul. She doesn't make music to suit trends or others agendas. She does what she wants and it comes from the heart. Isn't that what a true and wonderful musician really is? I think that all combines to make her one of the most beautiful musicians of our time. There's no reason to promote your negative energies upon anyone. Negativity never creates positivity, it will only multiply the negativity. Thank you Fiona for staying real and true to yourself.
