She's a true artist--she's amazing with emotion...she lives the song!

She's such a great mix of being raw and controlled, and making it all very emotionally honest. She doesn't need fireworks for this song. She mostly keeps it down low but because it really means something to her it's enthralling and draws you in. It's more like looking into a kaleidoscope. What I love about Fiona is that she doesn't indulge herself. It's not about her. It's abut the song. She doesn't even play to audience. They're just there to watch her doing her thing with her songs. She doesn't crave their attention and she'd do it the same even without them. I have a lot of respect for her.

That aggression at the end you noticed, that's not in the original recording. That's emotions evolving in real time, that's reflection on what he wouldn't say and how it makes her feel now. Fiona puts it all out there, it's real and there's intentionality behind everything in that performance.

Thank you for this reaction to Fiona Apple. She's one of the more under-appreciated singer / songwriters of the last half-century. A throwback vocal talent and a poetic lyricist. Everything is so delicate yet so controlled and deliberate. The emotion comes through because she bleeds out every performance, her music is so personal to her. This is probably my favourite performance of hers. She somehow sounds better live than in the studio too. I'd highly recommend "Don't try to change me now" and "Across the Universe" (beatles cover).
