In this easy tutorial I show you how 2 simple Skinner Blends can create a lovely curved Kaleidoscope with 2 patterned outcomes. Taking you step by step through the process, I show how to complete the Hexagon pendant with a simple bail backing.
This is a fun tutorial which should give good results for all levels of polymer clay enthusiasts.
The tutorial gives tips and techniques throughout and don’t forget, if you want more captions, you can click on the ‘cc’ box underneath the actual video and it will give subtitles for the whole video, which can also be translated (through the settings button) into other languages.

If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/ and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PolyOrig... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.thinkific.com/co...

I've been beading for about 9 years. I especially love looming. By running across my clay during this terrible coronavirus, it's like a wonderful blessing in disguise. And by running into you and one other artist, I am enjoying this self quarantine. 🤣 I love how you put these canes together Fiona. At first I didn't understand the smaller pieces on the back, but then I realized you were making bales for the pendants. Fabulous work in a relaxing, enjoyable way. Thanks so much. I hope you are staying safe. I live in Las Vegas and it's really creepy to see The Strip closed down. With cooperation and kindness I know we'll get through this. Take care and keep on rolling that clay.😆

Wow! I think everyone else has said it all, lovely to watch your tutorials, I particularly like the fact that you told us how much clay you used and that you only used a small amount. As I am new to polymer clay and deciding what to do first, with the small amount of clay I have on hand is proving difficult. Thank you for sharing your skill and time Fiona.

I want to share about cutting slices. There are many opportunities to practice slicing clay. Everytime before you do anything with a piece of clay just practice a few times. You can practice before you run scrape back through the clay machine when you need to make it back into sheets. I did this and it took a little while but it helped. I still practice before I cut a cane I have been working all day.

Hello!! i love love love your videos and was so inspired that i went out and bought a ton of clay! I accidentally bought sculpy 3 instead of primo though and since i can’t return it I was wondering if you have any tips for working with softer clay? Thank you!
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Maya. A really soft clay is more difficult to cane with, as the clay 'squidges' more easily under your fingers. However, it can still be done. But you need to make sure you do not overwork it, keep your hands (with their heat) off it as much as possible, and when you press down, do so with a light and gentle touch. You can also, every so often, if the clay is getting very soft and out of shape, cover it in something and pop it in the fridge for 20 minutes or so, (obviously keep it away from other food stuff) this should cool it down and make it less soft. Other than that, it is of course wonderful clay for sculpting with, and if you find it too soft to cane with, simply use it to create the underneath of beads and other pieces, that you can then cover with a firmer brand of clay. I hope that helps a bit, and please don't get put off having a go if this clay proves too difficult to create what you are hoping. It will not be you, just that some clays are better than others at particular methods of polymer clay creativity. :)

Hi, great video. You probably have already answered this question but I don't remember, I am curious what pasta machine you have? Thanks
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dianna, yes I get asked that a lot :) Here is my general reply, I hope it helps :) The pasta machine I use is an Atlas machine, at home I use the 180 (a wider machine) and when travelling or on workshops, I use the 150. I have always used the Atlas machines and I find them very good for Polymer Clay. However, there are other very good makes, such as the Imperia machines, and of course those made specifically for use with Polymer Clay. Ginger Davis Allman, from The Blue Bottle Tree has a number of articles on Pasta Machines - thebluebottletree.com/?s=pasta+machines which may prove helpful in choosing a machine. Here is a link to an Atlas machine, (for reference only, as obviously there are many other places both online, and in stores where they can be found), and it is worth searching around till you can find a good deal on one. I hope that is of some help. www.amazon.com/Marcato-8320-Machine-Cutter-Instructions/dp/B0009U5OSO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BPH5K7P26RQT&keywords=atlas+pasta+machine&qid=1556786279&s=gateway&sprefix=atlas+pasta+machine%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3

I love your your tutorial it is beautiful and very well done. I have a question for you how, how can you keep your The shine in the colour of your jewelry, to keep the original clay colours, during the baking or after,
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 5 жыл бұрын
the clay should maintain its colour during baking. I do always 'tent' my pieces in foil just in case the oven spikes in temperature while I am baking. Afterwards, I will normally sand and buff to get a good shine which will then last for a long time. It can always be re-buffed if the shine goes off slightly. I hope that helps? :)

Thank you for your videos. I am a beginner and am having trouble with distortion. Could my hands be to hot for the type of clay I am using (Sculpey III) any suggestions.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Elizabeth. You could be right about the clay Sculpey 111 may be a little too soft if you are new to the technique. However, if you are a patient soul, you can always do a little of the technique, then wrap your cane up, pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes, do the next bit, then back in the fridge etc? I know, not the best solution!! Even the softer clays can be caned with, but they are harder to maintain pattern in - as you are finding out. If you are happy to continue with the clay you have, my only advice would be to press in gently, not over condition the clay to start with, make sure you are working on a cool surface, and persevere. The more you get used to working with your brand of clay, the better you will get - the old adage really is true, practice makes perfect!! I hope that has been of at least a little help? :)

Yes and no ;) I have some and when I use them they are great, and I would, and do recommend them to anyone who wants to use them :) I have also used them in a couple of my videos. However, I use a lots of scrap clay, and despite having a huge box of it, am very lazy, and would rather use fresh scrap clay than have to condition older scrap clay. I work on the basis that the distorted ends will provide enough scrap clay for me to use under the veneer. I hope that helps? thanks Mary :)

Hi, thank for your question. I have seen your beginning video, asking for questions, and the cane you show looks fine to me? Can you tell me why you think you didn't succeed? I am not sure what you mean to show in your tutorial? Are you planning to show how to create this actual cane? In which case, no, it honestly wouldn't be okay with me, as I do these videos for free, but of course I earn a little bit when people watch my video. I am more than okay with people using, making and selling items using my designs, but actually teaching the whole technique in a way that earns them money while taking possible viewers away from me I do have difficulty with? If your video doesn't show how to make this whole cane, but only suggests an improvement you have added, then that could be okay? Is it possible for me to see it so I can judge fairly for you? I appreciate your thoughts about sending people to see my video, but if you are showing the technique in full, then anyone who watches yours will not need to see mine - does that make sense? You can always message me through my Facebook page, so we can discuss this privately if you would prefer? I am very supportive of other clay artists, but of course need to earn a small living myself too, I hope you understand? Thank you
