We have 10 clematis from CG in our gardens. I always take a photo of those directions as well as a metal marker to remind me of the variety. Thanks for the reminder of Finula’s directions on pruning and feeding.

Hi Fionuala 😊 new subscriber here. I found you through Janey’s channel. We visited Cottage Gardens yesterday and just want to say that it is BEAUTIFUL!!! and a must see!!! I came home with two Jackmanii Superba Clematis and I’m thinking of planting them under my redwood trees in the corner of my backyard against the fence. I live in the east Bay Area and my concern is that they will be getting some hot late afternoon (filtered) sun. Do you think this area would work?

How did I only just see this comment? Forgive me while I get the hang of it!!! So glad you loved your visit and that you took home one of my favorites. Jackmanii Superba is pretty tough, but still I like the idea of the sun being filtered - that really will help a lot. The actual heat is OK, but the afternoon sun's scorching rays are what really causes the problems. Keep an eye on your clematis during heatwaves and let me know how it goes?

I love mine. It grows through a climbing rose although they don’t bloom at the same time. In zone 6 and maybe everywhere, it dies back to the ground so you should put in a marker so you don’t loose it!

Hello what a beautiful gardener you are. I found your channel thru Janey. I live on a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. Can you recommend one of your beautiful Clematis that would be perfect for my coastal climate? I live in a beautiful historical gingerbread house called the Seashrimp. I have a very small postage stamp of a backyard that I would like to purchase some wrought iron panels and grow either clematis or some thornless roses for some privacy. Do you sell directly to consumers? Do you sell any of your wrought iron panels? Thank you so much for starting this information gardeners channel. Best, Laurie

Your garden sounds amazing and your gingerbread house is called 'Seashrimp' - OMG, I love it already! And I would love to see it someday...You know I am now going to do my best to figure out how to get you a clematis and the perfect trellis to grow it on, right??? I think my container favorite 'Boulevard Samaritan Jo' would work perfectly on your little island..

Too bad I don’t live in California, I would love your nursery! I really want a pair of those spiral trellises. Do you ship or could you possibly tell me who the manufacturer is so I could ask around my local garden centers to see if they could order those in for me? Thank you!

My boots! I had to watch the video again to see which of my favorites I was wearing that day! I love them dearly and for quite a long time, and I believe they're from Spain (or Portugal) by way of a shoe store in San Francisco and they're super comfortable and clean up well. I will get back to you if ever I can decipher the actual name of them.

Great video! I got to visit yesterday and I must say-this place is the best kept secret I never knew. I’m in love, awe, I’m jealous, I want to work there, live there-spend all day wandering around looking at everything-it was amazing. It’s probably a better idea for me to not drag my husband but he persevered haha; and I brought my trusty wagon-loader 19 year old son 😂. It is just beautiful and I can’t wait to go back. As soon as I plant what I bought 😅. Your staff were all lovely and knowledgeable too. You do a great job and have built what I’d call the coziest garden empire-like a giant secret garden. So fun. I’m so glad Janey and Robbie came down there originally or I don’t know when I’d have heard of you! Thanks again! -Angela

I’m zone 9a low desert in Arizona, any clematis recommendations for our area?

Ohhhhh - that's a tough one. It just might be too hot and dry for most of them, but it might be worth one of the viticella varieties a try? Make sure it's shaded in the afternoon and of course water it well!

I find my Sameratln Jo dies right back to the ground in my zone 6 location. It comes back very vigorous in early spring and does get to about 6’. Very pretty. Also love Ville de Lyon. I find it blooms again later on its own with only a slight trim once it hits 9’. I think if I cut it back more it might not have time to bloom before first frost. Nice that these two you mention, I have. Felt proud! Pruning - Raymond Evison was very fussy about pruning but we are more relaxed now. I have a look at each plant in spring and decide what action I will take which often depends on the amount of dieback.

Question about my zone 6 ( was a zone 5 )and clematis . Do they all need shade? It getsin the 9o's here but not for very many days straight. Thank you

In cooler zones with regular rainfall all year long, you dont' need to worry about afternoon shade like we do with our Mediterranean climate. The best thing to do is check with a local nurseryperson or a gardener close by. Good luck!
