This 1958 educational film called "Fire in Town" is about fire protection, featuring the fictional town of "Beechwood". The film offers some great video of Cornwall Ontario at the time. The story is fictional and we assume actors were used, but likely some locals filled in as extras. The film was produced by the National Film Board.

My Grandpa Stewart was a firefighter with the CFS. So proud of the work he did. When he passed in 2015, the current firefighters led the procession down hwy 2 to the cemetery. The procession was about twenty cars long. This video reminds me of how hard service was, yet so many gave their all for it. XO

Very interesting video showing Pitt and Second Streets in Cornwall in the late 1950s. When the fire truck returns to the station at 0.48 secs, you can see the back of City Hall (still in use today).

Seems, in hindsight at least, Cornwall was in better shape back then.. Could have a lot to do with individual perspective, Read about Cornwall, Ontario on Wikipedia, If what wiki says of Cornwall is true, Cornwall has quite the history!! If theirs a time wear everything gets reset to "factory" settings, While also keeping what they've learned, maybe it's today!

1958 and yet today its the EXACT same story. Volunteers are hard to come by, in any organization. Paid staff.....well they cost too much. The fire service delivery system is broken.

Same the world over. Full time firefighter posts being cut, stations closed, number of appliances reduced and employers with no empathy for the retained/volunteer system, expecting others to release employees for firefighting duties. What were once efficient and high morale brigades are now a shadow of their former selves and all down to cost cutting. If larger businesses like Amazon etc actually paid in taxes what they should instead of dodging them for the shareholders then things would be different but until personal greed is eliminated things are never going to change.

During the construction of the St Lawrence Seaway, many houses were burned in the area to be flooded, often with instruments set up by the National Research Council, to document how structures burn as an aid to developing better fire prevention and fighting techniques..

Great film, though a bit idealistic. In reality people get so wound up over whether facts are really facts and let their political leanings and emotions get in the way of critical thinking. The town boards and councils that represent them then do the same. The result is bickering, hurt feelings, lack of progress in many cases, and ultimately political vengeance by the side that “lost,” even if their position was an incorrect one or not in the best interest in the community. A quick look at the history books and, contrary to popular opinion, it’s easy to see it’s always been this way and probably always will be. Human nature. We’re seeing this aspect of human nature play out even now, though people and politicians do seem to be doing a slightly better job of putting their personal interests aside. Slightly. Even the current situation is not without its share of positioning and rhetoric interspersed with truth. We could sure use a little more of this film’s idealism in reality.

I agree. Also, folks have to relax when talking about politics, religion, etc. So many people get beet red mad - I really don't get it. In college we used to discuss this stuff all the time - laugh and have a good time with it - not today where I live - folks flip out, get mad and don't talk to each other for 10 years.

Stopped watching after that dumb mayor criticizes the need for proper fire equipment. I live in Park Ridge Il. A Chicago suburb and by the late 50's early 60's PR became the size it is now. we still had some volunteers firemen till 1968 and a central station till 1970. Obviously it's no secret it's harder for smaller town to provide these services as with bigger cities but in our case it took a little longer to improve things. Seems like that's the case anywhere.
