Written by Joel Kim Booster, directed by Andrew Ahn, and featuring an all queer cast, Hulu's Fire Island is a delightful and charming gay take on Pride and Prejudice. And though it never asks to be, by way of its representation of race and sexuality, it's also so much more than that, and my reaction to it was so much more than that. Let's review how Fire Island deals with "Pride and Prejudice" and pride and prejudice, in particular at the intersection of race, body image, and attraction.

The sexiest scene in the entire movie is the brief dance between Noah and Will at the underwear party so I wouldn't say that the narrative does not portray them as sexy. Howie however is never portrayed as sexy, you'd be right in that case.

I think the way that dex or Rhys were portrayed, they were almost reduced to nothing but their hotness, while our protagonists were shown as having layers, as is the case in most stories. So I did not feel like I explicitly needed to have Howie and Noah portrayed as sexy. Loved this review, you are clearly well versed in Jane Austen and the parallels you drew were on point. Great job adapting it by Joel Kim too.

This film (that I love) is based on a reality series shown on the LOGO Channel in 2017 by the same name. It has several episodes that extends the show by hours.

Hey Jayteeish, thanks for creating and posting another thoughtful & beautifully insightful video essay! I've re-watched Fire Island twice because as you know beneath Joel Kim Booster's genius adaptation of Jane Austen's societal commentary to this perfect all queer setting, like Pride and Prejudice, it is an amazing journey to go on with these lovely characters. You brought up an amazing point too, that of Howie as not just Jane but Charlotte too! In that scene you highlight, I was so into this dynamic among these two friends in differently perceived queer castes that I missed Joel Kim Booster's mirroring that Austen point.(Also, Bowen Yang and Booster were on fire in this scene in capturing something that felt immediate and true.) As to the not addressing the hotness of Howie by giving him sexy scenes, that felt okay to me only because of the Jane-ness/ rom-com dreaminess of his story with Bingley/ Charlie. But I'm glad you pointed out the things that are left out or not pursued more deeply. True, though, that it couldn't fully address or represent in this one movie all those issues and facets of our queer lives that we've been starved of for ...forever. But the lens that it does provide is an introspective and essential one: that (IMHO) only queer creatives living the queer experience can produce something reflecting their (and possibly our) truth. And even more specifically, only queer Asian creative voices can create this level of genuine representation. Conrad Ricamora's Will was so much fun and a perfect Darcy! And Margret Cho is just a gift to all the world but especially to the big gay world! Zane Phillips' Dex was an iconic queer-version of Wickham! It also is a beautiful looking film. Andrew Ahn has crafted a rom-com with moments of such heartfelt truth and queer joy that the world is a tiny bit better for it now existing and speaking in more nuanced ways about the meanings of pride. Thanks again for sharing your experience of and insights about Fire Island and queer culture, 💖, k

Watching the movie made me so proud to feel represented but in the same time incredibly depressed, seeing the one issue I hyperfocus on feeling as gay Asian. Thank you for examining and analyzing the film in more of a literary perspective but still retaining the personal and intimate touch surrounding the nature of the topic. It helps me process this movie so much more deeply and appreciate it as the awesome pioneer that it is :)

The original quote about pride and vanity came from Mary Bennet. That was of major significance, but otherwise everything seemed on point, particularly the Jane-Charlotte doubling. I'm no longer socially active and thus never declare on hotness (besides never having had standing to do so), but Jane clearly has almost every attraction but money while Charlotte wouldn't work as being clearly desirable. Interesting that all uses of the G word had a negative connotation and anything positive was labeled Q. I'm not sure how this film could have passed the Bechdel test (whether G films even should is a huge rabbit hole; personally I think that's part of why we'll be defined out of existence in another twenty or thirty years) except perhaps to have a Mary equivalent find another of her ilk and compare accomplishments.

A true superiority of mind but not a true superiority of dancing skills. So adorable. 😂 Also, I'm so happy that Darcy isnt White and that this movie was made. 💜

The emphasis on the "no Asians" racism highlights an overvaluing of the white gaze. Booster includes Black and Latin gays but they are supporting characters while the more substantial love interest role for the hopeless romantic is the stereotypical "golden retriever" white guy. One of the love interests was going to be a non-Asian and interracial by default is a PoC and a white person. It reminds me of Eugene Lee Yang's coming out video, everything negative in his life is Asian but his joy is a white man and the other "fan mail" Donald Glover received when it was rumored he might play Spider-Man, this well meaning white man tells him "there are no black kids like Peter Parker" it feels like Eugene and Joel perpetuating those toxic ideas.
