A volatile young man struggles to control his unusual powers.
FIRE is used with permission from Chris Andrews. Learn more at christopher-andrews.com.
Jack is an awkward, volatile teen who struggles not just to control his temper, but his unusual powers: his hands leak out fire when he struggles to control his rage and anger.
But then he randomly encounters a ranger in a forest, and tags along to watch him work. Faced with an unfamiliar environment and asked to contribute to an unusual task, Jack finds a way to be strong without anger -- and the key to working with his powers.
Writer-director Chris Andrews's short drama has the look and feel of a naturalistic story, full of gritty social realism and a strong sense of observation. It's photographed with the muted color palette typical of many naturalistic films, and the direction and editing have a careful attention to small details of performance and visuals, whether it's the shift in a facial expression, a pause in conversation or the reveal of a tree within a forest.
But the "superhero" elements add an element of engagement and unexpected depth to this coming-of-age story. Obviously metaphorical, it's still handled with subtlety, thanks to the understated performances and excellent craftsmanship of the filmmaking itself.
There are no "big" moments or swelling orchestral scores to underline huge emotion or revelation. Instead, the film carefully lays out its emotional arc on the tiny but meticulous shifts in performance and visuals, reflecting the shift in Jack's confidence and competence. When Jack once again has to face confrontation, he has learned how to harness himself -- and discovers that his self-awareness actually makes him even more powerful than ever.
FIRE can technically be filed under the "fantasy" category. But while the special effects are minimal and quietly done, the supernatural elements of the story still accomplish what all great fantasy does: it takes those magical powers and realms to comment on the deepest, most mysterious inner aspects of human existence, and brings an element of the archetypal to a work of great psychological insight.
Anger and rage at the injustices inflicted upon us are never easy to grapple with, and like Jack, we are all too often tempted to use those impulses towards violence. But those dark emotions have a role, as well as valuable information about our internal landscapes -- and by learning to deal with those feelings with a sense of self-mastery and insight, we can harness that righteousness towards productive ends, instead of against others or ourselves.

@@RubiRenegade The story presented would not have worked one iota as well as this version did if the fire symbolism/powers had not been included. You don't understand the symbolism of his "powers" and so in trying to make sense of them you think they were put in the story to "look cool". Why do you assume that the artists who put this short together are shallow and simple people who included something because it would "look cool"? Why do you not, instead, assume and trust that there is a moral and artistic reason for the powers and that you do not, as yet, understand the symbolism? It's far more flattering for you to believe that you have properly understood what you watched than to realize you have not totally understood, nor clearly seen the meaning in the film. Consuming art is not like consuming a can of baked beans. You don't always understand art or any abstraction right away; some things need time. You commented immediately after watching the film though, didn't you?

Maybe, but so far there's no story. A teen with a fire-based super power and his little brother, on the lam from their abusive father, to do... in search of... about to become involved in... See? All this short film did was build up a main character's backstory with a couple of very tenuously connected supporting characters, but there is no actual story. The ENTIRE plot for a movie would need to be created for this character.

This is a story. It had a beginning, middle and end, with try-fail cycles and character growth, ultimately overcoming its initial problem. So it is a complete story. But I agree with you, it does open up intriguing potential for exploration at the end for a more milieu-based story, and in that regard feels like a tease for a bigger story.

You ever notice in films, some films, that men, when they meet other men, strangers to them, they can’t just be friendly. No smiles or polite greetings. They greet each other like either is just this side of the line between being violent or at least antagonistic. Surly expressions. Grunt-like greetings. In real life, if someone sees me in public and says hello, whether man or woman, it’s usually a regular ordinary smile, a nod of the head, a hello or something.

Well by my Reckoning they did what any Texan would do when trying to speak Spanish and not knowing the word they're reaching for, such as "Hola meo necessito el rido en el caro" I hope this clarifies as to how omeleto was come up with. Obviously a Texan was hungry an in the mood for an omelette...musta been a Spanish speaking spot and Voila. Fast forward two years to said Texans inception of KZfaq movie channel and bam insert awesome new word.

Good story with an underlying message. He had to get away from his bad father so his little brother can grow up right. He saw the light after meeting that lumberjack who trusted him was a complete stranger to him.

I see why he had to leave, so he could get his brother, but I sure hope he took him right back to the woods so they both can learn about pruning. Unrelated side note though, is the younger brother has a different voice than the kid that is actually there for what reason again lol?
