In this video I cover a few thoughts regarding poorly constructed fire pits, how I set up my tarp and how we prepare for bears in our campsite.

Thanks Craig. I intend to do more video on bears as we have had some actual encounters. Many folks think because food is in a plastic bag or in a barrel that a bear won't notice. Human's just can't imagine what a bear's nose is like. Thanks for the views and comments!

I’m with you on your fire pit opinions. I absolutely love Quetico, but the two things that make me upset when I’m out there are poor fire pit conditions and improper human waste disposal.

Absolutely. It is a great place but I wish visitors left sites a good or better than they found them.

I bet they used the flat rock on top to cook on top of. Not as ideal as an open grill/grate that you would have to bring in if not already there, but it is an innovative and a minimalist approach. Hopefully, giving a possible reasonable idea for why they did this may help keep you from being so upset about this in the future. Experimenting with self-reliance in a non-harmful way like they did should be encouraged. I can't see how it's use would actually hurt anything. From their perspective, leaving it there for you may be helpful. Removing it like you did may be irritating, but it shouldn't be that much trouble. I totally agree with you about the pistachio shells and garbage however.

Also, I don't like it when people rock stack. Other than practical and minimal utilitarian type things like grills, commodes, trails, etc...leave no trace!

Great tips Kevin! I'm glad the bears we have here are more shy than the American ones! I have yet to see one, but I hope one day i will.

I didn't even know you had bears. If you come to Canada someday I am sure I can show you some. We live in a rural area and get them in our yard this time of year. Fortunately our dog keeps them from being a permanent guest. :)

Bears in the yard would make big headlines here! :D Bears are not as common here, but not rare, and they always stay away from people and run long before you see them.

What is it about pistachio shells on campsites? Nearly impossible to go on a canoes trip without running into at least one campsite with them strewn about.

I bet they were cooking on the flat rock. I’ve done that before. Those rocks can get hot enough that I’ve cooked meat directly on the rocks.

Perhaps but a fire won't breathe well in a pit like that.
