Bruhh, the water is not controlling the flame. It is used for suppressing the sound waves generated by the controlled combustion, why are soo powerful that it can damage the infrastructure nearby, including the launchpad itself.

It’s not to protect the atmosphere but to protect the steel plate the water is shooting out of. This is so they can check to see how much damage the engine will do to a steel plate spraying water so they can use it for the launch. It works quite well

Just 230 bar of pressure already destroyed a launchpad and cost a year to reconstruct to suitable with Starship's booster, idk how destructive of 33 350 bar engine looks like.

@@hugoandre96 While the raptor vacuum can handle being turned on inside the atmosphere due to Raptor's ridiculous chamber pressure (and from what I understand there is no problem if it has structural supports added) it is not advisable - Efficiency and thrust would be lower compared to the sea level variant if I recall correctly

You can tell because the exhaust collapses on itself immediately after exiting the nozzle, making that single shuttle-like mach diamond. The sea level engines' exhaust actually expands out from the nozzle exit before collapsing back into a series of smaller mach diamonds.

Friends that first engine is a RS-25 not a raptor or RD180. Edit: NVM guys, I got it. It is in fact a Raptor/Vacuum.

Thats 540,000lbs of thrust for those of you curious (rounded up) For comparison, the GE90 jet engine (11 foot diameter!) makes 115,000 pounds of thrust.

@@noxious89123 afterburners generally gain 30-60% thrust output, i would guess 160,000lbs of thrust, maybe 175,000lbs. But think, thats the weight of 2 fully loaded semi trucks coming out of your exhaust, like its being pushed by 160,000lbs. Thats crazy

@@MistaRoyanT Good question. Specific impulse is on the high end, but not the best. I think it is a tradeoff between liquid hydrogen and methane as fuels, Also the reusability of Raptor. (Ref. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_orbital_rocket_engines)

What is that 89 ton thrust increase; about 40% ? What was the fuel consumption increase? This is massive engineering.

The first is a non-atmospheric raptor designed for space for the ship of the starship and the camera don’t show all the flames and the second is v2 atmospheric raptor for earth so it’s more effective on earth on water deluge (the only raptor for demonstration) and the camera is well placed for a test cause it was demonstration only

@@Goofyspacenerdfew years ago they did fire up a preburner taken from one I believe. I may be wrong though, no expert here. Just love loooove hearing that crackle together with that giant amazing orange plume from those F1’s 😍 and every now and then watching their static fire or launch. I do hope for a shot with U S A on the side of booster/starship coming into frame as it launches just like the Saturn V had

I think we still know how to build such engines, they're just not suited for our current use + they consumed an insane amount of fuel which is not justified anymore as there isn't really a competition with Russia for the space race no more

All I remembering is some special metallurgical process done via hand working was lost? I wonder what the improvements are to this engine? Like is there some kind of frequency control to properly mist the fluids like through cymatics? I wonder what they did. Cool beans regardless.
