How did the chicken cross the yard? Chunnel! Fall is here and it's time to pack up the garden so I'm letting the chickens do the work. Chicken tunnel from the Chicken Run to the Garden using 2'x4' 14 gauge wire fencing. Easy as can be

This is ingenious! I’m 66 year old woman and I don’t want to bother with something complicated, just a little roaming area. You can even move this around wherever you want them to play/forage/eat bugs. I have seen that type of wire but, I didn’t realize it was that easy to shape the way you want. The possibilities are endless with this setup. I’ll use the same strategy to keep bunnies out of my veggie garden, too. I love this! A kid could do this with no problem!....with supervision, of course. He/she would need to make sure the wire ends won’t injure the chickens or themselves.Thank-you so much!

Thank you SO much for this amazing reply to the video. You are right, this can be moved around to work with all kinds of applications. My Dad is in his 70's and he works alot in the yard when I'm working and uses this to move them around to other penned in areas with ease. It's great when you want to seed an area with winter wheat or something that you don't want them destroy for a while, and you re direct their traffic. I am happy you found it inspiring and wish you the best. Cheers!

One thing I would highly recommend, get some good sturdy camping tent stakes and use those to pin down the “Chunnel”. If an animal lands on it and tries to get them through the fencing, this will help keep it stable so they can run, run,run! Hope this helps! Cheers

Excellent!! Watched a lot of Chunnel videos and designed one w 2”x2” wooden base but I’m switching to your design! Thanks so much for sharing and you have a wonderful setup and love the way you care for your friends! I’m excited to build this. My hubby n I built a 4’x8’ coup w an 8’x20’ covered and enclosed run last year. Got peeps in April and just put them out last week. We’re in our 60’s so slowin down and love great ideas on time saving, easy ways of doin things! Thank you again!

Have been working on seeding the run with winter wheat, clover, and wheat for winter and hopefully they will get along. Put a fence up to divide the area into two so the different groups can see but not touch for at least a day. Wish me luck! Cheers

The roll of fencing I used was the 2”x4”, 72 inches tall and 100 ft long. The longer the roll, the heavier it is, which makes moving it less than fun. They usually come in 50 ft as well which would make it much easier probably. Hopefully this helps, good luck!

Hi, cool vidéo, i love your sliding door ! Personnaly i have done a chicken tunnel with a wire fence rolled on onto itself like a tube, and at the connections i've made a soft articulation with an alternance of hard wirefence (two rows) and soft chiken wire (about 30 centimetres), until you can bend it at 90 degre. Then you can had any number of section that you want and move the chiken tunnel around like a big snake, in order to maw the lawn with the chickens, and place them where you want the grass and weeds to be eaten.

Sébastien Fraggl That sounds like a great idea. It would add a new level of versatility to it. Lately we have been spending so much time in the yard the chickens have been able to roam around and free range. I cut the Chunnel up into 5 ft sections and was planning on connecting with some small hinges so I could fold it up when not in use. The winter time here is when we see a spike in predators. I like your idea. I may have to revisit mine and tweak it a bit. Thanks!! ATB

@fireballmalone1

I’m happy you found this helpful. The chickens will do some damage if they’re let in during the growing season, and the will munch on what they can reach. After a little while they tend to get bored and move along. I don’t let them in in the beginning of the growing seasons while everything is getting established, but will allow them access only a few times before fall cleanup. After that they have full access because they will slightly till, weed, and debug the boxes pretty well going into winter. Hope this helps, cheers!

That is great! I laughed out loud at 6 minutes when you used the wheelbarrow and two of your chickens 'followed' you using their chunnel, three others appear to have gotten lost in the 'veggie patch maze' before they were able to find the chunnel. What do you do with it when you need to cut your grass? I have about 100' to cover and I think I would prefer sections so I can move it a bit easier. I am not sure how that would work yet.

Just a thought: It would be easier to bend the wire if you used a board a couple feet long to stand on while you pull it up.

I really like your garden gate that I saw near the end of the video. I am trying to predator proof my Garden & new chickens from mostly deer & raccoons, here in Oregon. I'm also enlarging the garden at the same time. The tunnel really caught my eye too. Reminded me of one I saw many years ago that gave the chickens access to several compost piles and surrounded the garden on 3 sides like a horse shoe. I have a barn door gate bracket, is that what you used for the gate? I'm no carpenter, so I have to be able to explain it well or show it to get one built for me. Thank you! I enjoyed seeing your video and beautiful garden.

Fun seeing the chickens in the garden. What are the coral colored flowers in the left bed? They are gorgeous!

Thanks, I'm not sure on the flowers. We were gifted those from a friend in the Mennonite community near here. We helped repair a greenhouse and they insisted we take them. I will try and find out!

One of the things I added were camping stakes to help keep it secured to the ground. For a long term solution I would add an additional section of wire at the base and bury it. That’s how I did my coop and it’s withstood many attempts by various animals to get in. I hope this is helpful and good luck

How do you keep prey animals from getting inside the tunnel? In Oklahoma, we can have 50mph winds on any given day. I’m a little concerned about stability. I’m looking at tunnel strong enough to keep out raccoons, possums, dogs, cats,and skunks. I’m so new at this, I’m just in the looking stage. Maybe I’m overthinking this whole thing. I do love the simplicity. Thank you for your video.

Skunks raccoons possums are only around at night here and by then our girls are shut safely in the coop. We use an auto door.

It looks like welded wire you were using, is it? The field wire I have is woven, I'm not sure it would bend and hold shape like that. I have some 1" chicken wire I wonder if that would work.

How do you hold the tunnel sections in place on the ground? How do you connect one section to the next of the tunnel. Do you leave the chickens out over night and not loss any to predators in the tunnels or runs? Can you tell me more about the stakes you used? I think I want to find and use them. Thanks.

To hold the tunnel down I use camp tent stakes, because I had a ton of extras. When this kind of fencing is cut one end is going to be flush and the other will have the protruding pieces that can be folded UP into the next section so they don't pose a threat to piercing the chickens as they run through. I have doors now on both ends and at night those doors are closed and they are secured in the coop. The doors are manual and have to be opened just for the day so they can run across to the garden. Now we are planting a ton more as we get more efficient and spring to fall the chunnel is put away. I hope this helps. Cheers.

Elwood Hurrin No, they would destroy everything. They’d have a blast, but it would be destruction. This was my first year growing and having chickens and I was just trying to get as many long term systems figured out. I put it back up in December and I’ll take it down in the beginning of March when I start bringing out my starters. Cheers

Nice set up... but I would use hardwire cloth so raccoons/possums couldn’t stick their hands in and kill the chickens.
@fireballmalone1
@fireballmalone1 6 жыл бұрын
The Chick Guy That’s a good idea. Around here most predators come out at night but in the winter time we get foxes. Hardware cloth would be much sturdier and a safer option. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers

I’ve had ducks... and at first we had no idea what we were doing and most of ducks got killed when we had a chicken wire pen... I want some chickens and I am much more prepared this time, when I had the ducks I was only like 4 or 5 anyway.

The Chick Guy I hope you are able to get some chickens. They are such a blast to have running around the yard. Predator proofing your coop is a pretty good way to keep them safe. I tried really hard making sure nothing could get in. During the day we actually let them out now but the chunnel goes back up in the fall and I might remake it with hardware cloth

Do predators not mess with them?
@fireballmalone1
@fireballmalone1 Жыл бұрын
We’ve been fortunate that the only predators that seem to be around are prevalent at night. We did lose one to a fox and kept them locked down for a few weeks. We do let them free range a few times a week, but there’s always someone working the yard for the most part

Actually I don't. The only animal products I eat are the eggs they gift us from taking care of them. I don't eat any meat or dairy products, and stay away from factory farmed eggs. We recently saved some Barred Rocks that were basically going to left to die and they 4 of 5 bounced back after a bout of upper respiratory infections, we did lose one. But she had a good life for a little while. I have given them meal worms and we were given 3000 crickets from a local farm that just stopped by one day and we released them in the forest while the girls were free ranging and it was scary how aggressive they got lol. Cheers!
