One thing I've seen done and tried myself and found success with is always have the bale facing your left hand. That way you don't have to reach as far to close it when the need arises and it's a completely natural motion without stretching or reaching

Firefighter on the nozzle is at times using a thumb hand grip...This is dangerous if nozzle shoots back at face a hand grip will not protect the face/head, so you must have arm across , forearm and elbow will protect your face correctly.

That's were you are wrong. The way this guy holds with the hand underneath is crap. Easy way to get smacked in the face.Try using it on a slightly wider stream , as it wastes less water and gives you a larger surface area which is more effective.

@@andyoxleyonhistravels a wider hose steam entraps air and is not the best in every case. Also, they are demonstrating a smooth bore nozzle.

@@MathesonColin A slightly wider stream is always more effective as it has a greater surface area. This means more water is absorbed which reduces heat and knocks the fire down quicker. Watch when they use solid tight streams. Much of the water is not absorbed and falls back to the floor thus making it wasted and ineffective. If you use too wider a stream on certain width openings you can entrain more air so it is best to not use the stream too wide. I hear loads of guys going on about water mapping which is a very poor way to use water. The tests done on water mapping by nist were done in a non fire environment so they are totally useless and results incorrect as you have no idea how water is absorbed unless you carry out the tests in a fire environment. Again much of the water used in water mapping just hits walls and ceilings and falls back to the floor and is not absorbed by the fire so is wasted.
