I don't understand how, in question 3, dividing by the number of pulleys is a valid solution. I would think that if you pull 20 ft of cable, then as long as the cable doesn't stretch, it will pull 20 ft "everywhere". By this I mean that, since the cable is some given length, say 50 ft long, and you pull 20 ft of it, then there should remain 30 ft of the cable that you've yet to pull towards yourself. In this case, I would say that the far end of the cable has moved 20 ft.

@tizocvelasco3520
@tizocvelasco3520 3 жыл бұрын
the "divide by the number of pulleys" trick only works if you have pulleys that move. Fixed pulleys do not provide any mechanical advantage, they only change the direction of the force. So really, you need to multiply the number of MOVEABLE pulleys X2 and then divide by that number.
@tizocvelasco3520
@tizocvelasco3520 3 жыл бұрын
Also, your drawing couldn't exist in real life. The pulleys would need to be attached to the load. Think about it in real life. If you pulled on the rope and the pulleys on the bottom were just free floating like that, they would just get flung up straight into the air. Anyway though, sorry to "nay-say." I do appreciate the free help.

Great videos and very informative. You mention for question 2 that we are to divide by 4, although the diagram illustrates a 5:1 mechanical advantage, therefore shouldn’t we divide by 5? Similarly for question 3, which illustrates a 3:1 mechanical advantage, shouldn’t we divide by 3?

Liquid pressure doesn't change by volume it changes by height. This is why pressure can be measured by inches of water or inches of mercury. So let's say they are all filled to 30". That means there's 30 inches of water of pressure. Or 1.08274 PSI.
