Plumbers and welders often use open flame in their work and sometimes they get a bit careless. There were more than a few occasions in my career that I noted the plumbing van out front of a structure fire and found out later that that they had caused the fire.

There may have been some things that should have been done better as far as breathing air but they did a great job knocking down a very difficult fire in a balloon frame dwelling. I’ve seen many career departments lose buildings like this.

lol, they have to be better than they were in the 80's and early 90's. One night i said to a lady "watch, they will put those lines across those wires" and without fail 30 seconds later they blew the transformer then looked at each other like how did that happen. I just laughed and went back to work and said the power will be out a long time and they sent us home. Half the town lost power because of them. Worse was when they started putting the fire out then shut water off to move trucks around. And then there was the 17 year old who couldn''t find the spanner on the truck so he ran across the street and took one off another truck at the station. And this was all for one fire! It was like the Keystone cops fire department version.

noticed that. I guess SOP's allow a white helmet as a substitute for basic safety gear. Also, back in the day as a truckie, I found that a roof ladder over the peak of a steep roof was a lot easier to work off of than trying to grow a couple more feet in height so I could try to stay in contact with the stick.

The lack of SCBA is a problem. You can see thick black smoke pouring out of the surrounding openings, and you don't want to breathe that in. Also, it's good to be breathing from the air pack while ventilating in case things deteriorate (EG: fire gets worse, firefighter falls through roof, etc.) Ultimately, it's a safety issue. Proper use of SCBA and PPE helps ensure everyone goes home.

Ok, lets start talking about stupidity here. Every window on the top level is venting out the windows but they thing it's a good idea to tie up personnel while putting firefighters at risk to make one more opening. Now take a look at that 6"x6" hole and tell me what that was supposed to do. Then they go back up to cut another useless hole. WHY? 2:46 Now if they had just walked up the stairs with a booster line and applied tank water the the burning material, this would have never escalated and like most fire videos, it would have been out before the video started..

It was 90 degrees with matching humidity that day. Without being on air, his mask should've been all fogged up. Not sure how he could see anything. Very unsafe practice. If fire would've pushed out of the hole, one breath of that super heated air would've been devastating. Not to mention if the roof failed and he fell through. No survivable air. If you are venting above the fire, always wear full turnout gear and SCBA and be on air. The life you save may be your own!

Like I said, regardless of conditions, I’m not defending his actions. To commit oneself to any fire ground without being fully prepared is kind of senseless in my opinion. Every firefighter(based on level of training of course) should be ready for reassignment at a moments notice, with particular emphasis toward firefighter safety and survival. If the unexpected occurs, everyone should be able to fill in the blanks in as fast a manner as possible. There’s no reason for a qualified firefighter to be operating without their SCBA on and mask at the ready. But without siting all types of REAL firefighting problems that can arise from such negligence, lets all just be honest and call it what it is. For whatever the reason, over the past few years, it’s become a fad, it’s trendy to mimic the PG County “Boston flat” look including the removal of the eye protection. I know for a fact that in my general area members are told that if they don’t have the appropriate eye protection then where your mask as an alternative. Again, senseless in my opinion but it happens.

@riseagan
@riseagan 4 жыл бұрын
@@katiekane5247 You don't need to vent a self venting fire. It will do exactly what Steven said, it will involve the entire attic. We also place far too much emphasis on ventilation. Going by all that pressurized black smoke, this was a vent limited fire just waiting for some oxygen, and then it would flash. Vertical ventilation would create a perfect flow path and give the fire exactly what it wants. It is true the visibility may improve while in the flow path, but the fire is getting hotter, and it is coming. We need to make sure that before we vertically ventilate, we have applied enough water to transition the fire from vent to fuel limited. Underwriters Laboratories did a great study that you can read online regarding the effects of ventilation.

Vertical ventilation impacts a fire differently than horizontal ventilation does. I would imagine that this is a ballooned framed structure which means the walls have an open void from the cellar right to attic! Great for running utilities, but terrible for fire spread. Despite smoke issuing out of a particular floor, we can't always say with 100% certainty where the fire actually originated in ballooned frame buildings. Very likely this building has "knee walls" on the top floor. If fire gets behind walls in such buildings it's also going right into the ceiling and the f/f have fire above them as well. Those ceilings need to be "pulled" in order for it to be extinguished. It can be very difficult to extinguish attic floor fires in balloon framed buildings without vertical ventilation, as you basically chase the fire around. Things can get quite uncomfortable on those top floors under fire conditions. High heat and low visibility and not knowing exactly where the fire is. Vertical venting at the highest point may improve visibility for the firefighters thereby assisting their search for possible victims. If you can cut the hole over the hallway and stairs all the better! I think these guys are vollies. As far as I can see, they put out the fire from inside the building.. which I consider a success. It's not uncommon for this type of fire to turn out quite differently. Just surf You Tube and you'll see. I certainly wouldn't be too quick to criticize these guys & gals here. They seem like a determined group.
