The amazing thing about firefly is how it sold you in the fact that there is this crew on a ship going places with moments like these. The graphics always get better but the downtime connecting around a meal is a real thing humans would do on any ship that takes a while to get from point a to b.

Serenity was two sound stages. One was the Bridge, hallway with crew cabins, the lounge, the hallway to the engine room, and the engine room. The stairs down to the lower deck is where they would cut shots to the next stage which was the cargo bay, infirmary, and passenger quarters. Reportedly, whenever they were between scenes, the actors would usually hang out in the lounge if it wasn't being used, instead of going back to their trailers. Likely contributed to the family feel you get in the show.

I love Alan Tudyk's acting in this scene. Wash knows Zoe well enough that he has some idea of the direction this story is going in, and doesn't want to make his wife relive that, so he tries to turn it into a joke. Doesn't work, but it was a valiant effort.
@nifemi_o3 жыл бұрын
That's not how I saw it, at all. My read was of him being so jealous of Zoe's history with Mal, that he tries to derail the story with his joke. It's great acting though, either way.
@augustwinterman69523 жыл бұрын
@@nifemi_o Could be both. The reason he might honestly give would be he was sparing Zoe (and Kaylee, too), but the underlying reason would probably be his jealousy towards Mal.
@DaveDexterMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@nifemi_o That's definitely it. She's told stories like this over and over, it doesn't bother her; Zoe's far tougher than Wash and he knows it. Given the narrative of this episode was their damaged relationship (by him, but still), it's absolutely him being sick of her war stories and connection to Mal. His look as soon as she slips into "Our platoon" was amazing subtle acting. I personally think that Gina's acting there is even subtler; that she likes telling the stories and likes reminding people of her past. Just a hint of ego, perhaps. Where she might have said offhandedly "oh, there was this time I saw someone eat an apple with a grenade in it", she goes full-blown.

The grenade-apples story is rather reminiscent of IRL stories from World War 1. A bit of an Anti-Christmas Truce: Canadian troops threw cans of corned beef etc. into beleaguered German trenches, and when they heard the now concentrated groups of Germans call out for more they began throwing hand grenades instead. "Merry Christmas, Huns!"

The problem I have with her explanation is that if the knife hits the granade it would still go off
@raw66682 жыл бұрын
Better to lose a hand rather than a head. Also, look at how Mal and Zoe cut it. Zoe cut it slowly and just shy of the core, using minimal force to remove portions of the apple to see if a grenade is inside. Mal thrust his knife into the apple while on the table, does not touch it and handles it with his knife before he starts cutting it. Also, we don't know too much about the grenade other than their size, and they respond to pressure. Perhaps they are small enough to damage and make inert with a knife. And a bite force has more pressure than a knife. You only need 10lbs of force to cut an object like an apple, a human bite is on average 101lbs of force.
@s-094cam5 Жыл бұрын
has to do with pressure/force dynamics. More enclosed space (chomping down with the mouth) will result in increased force as the blast has less area to disperse in. Stab it with the knife and it has nearly complete freedom of available angles to disperse out.

I love this show but wouldn't the apples explode when they hit the ground from being thrown if they indeed "respond to pressure"?
@augustwinterman69523 жыл бұрын
The trigger is probably set to the pressure generated by a bite (possibly pressure exerted at a single point on the sensors), but not simply holding it or dropping it, while the fruit itself absorbs and/or distributes most shock that would otherwise set it off before it got to its target. They have to be able to transport them, especially after they'd be armed. It sounds like they were thrown in bulk, so they'd have to be carried together, too, possibly in a crate of some sort. Too sensitive, and all it would take is one Alliance solider with butterfingers, either in transportation or while chucking them - or just some guy too enthusiastic with their throw - to screw the whole scheme and ruin everyone's day.
@augustwinterman69523 жыл бұрын
@@williambodin5359 Didn't sound like rumor-mongering to me. While I wouldn't put it past Mal to do something like that (remembering the Pilot), at least with Simon, it's something that neither Zoe nor Mal bring up until Kaylee notices, and Zoe seems a little too haunted by the retelling for it to be made up, too clinical and detached. Also, since Kaylee is basically the only crew member that is universally liked by the rest, I don't think Zoe, straight-laced as she is, would make up or exaggerate something potentially traumatizing for her just for kicks or to simply make talk (I don't think Jayne would, either). It also gives a little more nuance as to why Mal hates the Alliance so much. Makes his anger seem a little more personal. Also, when is any piece of speculative fiction *not* over-the-top? How many times has Star Wars or Star Trek done something utterly ridiculous, but we rolled with, or even applauded it for the simple fact that it was interesting?
@VeryPeeved2 жыл бұрын
