Firewood Kiln Heated by Outdoor Wood Boiler

Little update on the Firewood Kiln, how the kiln has been running and how much wood it takes to heat kiln and house for a 12hr burn.

Very interesting channel Matt. I stumbled onto yours yesterday and subscribed this morning. I used to live in Wisconsin 40 yrs ago. We had a wood burning furnace plumbed into the hvac duct system. I couldn’t believe how much heat came from wood. I like to burn hot to eliminate creosote buildup in the masonry chimney. The temperature would be 20 below and we were warm and toasty. I’ll be watching your older videos today. Thanks for the time/effort creating this content.

Yes hotter the better to minimize build up in the chimney. So with the amount of load I put onto my boiler it’s always burning hot especially with the dry wood I put in. I would of never thought I could utilize my boiler in so many ways. The good thing is I have as much wood as I would ever need to keep feeding her. In the future I will also be putting even more of a load on her as well. Lots and lots of projects to come.

Awesome job on the kiln Matt! Everything seems to be clicking along how you wanted it to. If you get some you need to dry, I would be interested in seeing a drying trend on green Oak. Thats what most of the would I harvest here in TN is and it takes forever to season on its own. Great video as always. Take Care, Brandon

I’ve tried pure oak before. Was my 3rd load I believe. Let it dry for 6 full days. And was good to go. This was when it was warmer out. Fresh cut to. No rot. It’s what I am burning in the boiler right now. Bigger pieces too. Heat and air flow is key

I use a few different systems. One to monitor the air temp and moisture and one to monitor the internal temp of the wood and the moisture within the wood. So a custom design. I still may end up buying a true all in one system. Just hard to do since my kiln is literally a one of design.

Is it practical to store saw dust to to burn? I remember seeing sawdust in paper bags being sold for home furnaces in Finland . They weighed about 20-25 ibs each

I don’t burn the saw dust in the boiler. I don’t think with my gasser it would like that very much. We bag and sell the clean saw dust to local farmers. Win win for everyone.
