”フィリピン武術”またの名をアルニス（”エスクリマ”、または”カリ”とも呼ばれ、地方や国によって呼称は異なります）はフィリピンで発祥した多彩で豊かな武術システムです。この武術はフィリピンの歴史と文化に深く根ざしており、護身術、戦闘、そして生活の一部として数世紀にわたり洗練され、発展を遂げました。
世界中の軍隊や警察でも近年フィリピン武術を特別なものとするのは、実用性と適応性に優れているからです。一般的にフィリピン武術ではスティック、ナイフ、刃物などの武器の使用を強調しますが、素手の戦闘においても熟練したプラクティショナーを育てます。たとえばアルニスの流れるようなリズミカルな動きは、踊るように魅惑的でいて、実は非常に効果的な動きです。映画などのアクションシーンでもフィリピン武術の技が入れられているものが多いほど見るものを惹きつける魅力的な動きなのに、戦闘術としては非常に優れているのです。
この武術の主要な原則の1つは「流れ」と「適応性」です。フィリピン武術家は異なる戦闘テクニックを一つの場面においてシームレスに移行することを学びます。それにより現実の自己防衛が強力になります。要はどのような場面に於いても数々の戦闘テクニックを一瞬にして同時に、またはまるで一つの動きのように切れ目なく繰り出すことができるので、相手に攻撃される隙がまったくできないのです。そして、相手の武器をコントロールすることに神経を向け、防御に加え相手の武器を奪うことも一連の流れの中で繰り出せるように稽古しています。まさに「どんな場面にも臨機応変に適応できる流れるような動作」で戦います。
フィリピン武術の美しさは、実用性だけでなく、文化的な意義もあります。フィリピン武術は”フィリピン人の抵抗力と機転の証”です。フィリピンの歴史を知れば納得の事実でしょう。
これらの武術は国際的に認知され、効果的で芸術性のある武術として世界中で注目されています。武好者であるか、自己防衛を学びたいかにかかわらず、フィリピン武術は戦闘訓練の世界で有効的な技術を持っています。
