First Airbus H160 SAR Helicopter Delivered to Babcock for the French Navy

The first of six H160 Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter was delivered by Airbus Helicopters to Babcock. The H160 is intended for the French Navy (Marine Nationale) and is part of the interim fleet which will replace the Alouette III until the H160M Guepard enters service.

The ten year contract represents a milestone in the French Ministry of Defense procurement process as it is the first time that a contract includes both hire and purchase of a brand new aircraft as well as its through life support.
The contract enables the French Navy to lease new helicopters from Babcock while the French procurement agency DGA will benefit from the experience gained in preparing for the arrival of the H160M. The H160M is the military variant of the helicopter which will equiped all three services (army, air force and navy) as part of the HIL (light joint helicopter) program.
In partnership with Airbus Helicopters and Safran Helicopter Engines, Babcock is set to deliver to the French Navy these six H160 helicopters modified for SAR roles. The first one is scheduled to arrive at Hyères naval air base in September 2022. The modifications include the installation of a console coupled with Safran's new generation "Euroflir 410S" EO/IR system, the integration of watertight "diver" tank as well as a medical as well as a medical wall to EMS standards.

How will Babcock maintain the Naval, Army and Air Force versions? Contractors in the field? Charge back? Seems ridiculous.

looks like a good helicopter if now we could only fix all the issues with our NH-60... especialy all the ones the australians have signaled to us. that would be fantastic. armed versions would be nice too.

That’s probably not by coincidence the H-160 is so close in name to the American multi-military-service multi-version H-60, which is possibly the most successful helicopter in world history. This is not an exaggeration, with unique versions flown by the United States Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, even a U.S. Presidential version, and recently now, even an unique fire fighting version sold to the State of California. And there’s a replacement coming, which seem almost an impossible and too costly choice.

So what happens when the aircraft requires maintenance in manoeuvres, or in a real conflict. I understand that leasing certain hardware to military forces may be more cost effective, such as training or non combat equipment. But to basically lease actual combat aircraft - we all know how the French like to go on strike over pay/conditions!

Modern military support works in this way. It worked this way even back into history, as long as your nation has some capacity they can fight wars for a surprisingly long time. This is one of the horrors of industrialized warfare

This is a temporary contract for a few the civilian versions needed now to replace old heli. Meanwhile they are finalizing a militarized version of the H160 called H160M. France has ordered 169 H160M for the army, navy and air force with first deliveries expected in 2024

The same sort of rubbish we do in the UK unfortunately. A good amount of aircraft are contracted to the UK armed forces for training & operations etc. through these horrible companies such as Babcock. They're nasty and end up costing more than if they were bought.

Loose the rotary system, add two jet engines that can rotate like on Osprey and you get much better craft, additional trusters on lower part of the fuselage for stability and voila.
