Clubs need to teach and enforce basic levels of etiquette. Some people don't care if they're affecting others because to them its just a hobby they do once a week.

Jake! Outstanding advice! As an archery coach, loading a bow vertically is part of lesson #1. Even when shooting field archery, loading a bow vertically is an important habit, shows other archers respect and demonstrates that you're not a complete noob. Listen to Jake's advice everyone: Be a pro... load your bows vertically always, no matter what style you shoot.

I have a side quiver with the arrows leaning to the front. In the lane next to me was an archer with a side quiver with his arrows backwards. When he tried to grab an arrow he took one of mine. It was just a practice round and we had a great laugh about it, but it can mess up a tournament shot for sure.

Very good advice. Also be aware of where you have your arrows. I am relatively short (163,5 cm) and had a much larger person in front of me. He had his arrows in his back pocket if I recall correctly (or a weird quiver), and let's put it this way, his nocks were very close to my eyes. So even though I wore wrap-around sunglasses, (as it was an outdoors competition) I felt that there was a level of danger there.

Top job, Jake - it's one of those things that would become obvious only after you've really messed up three people's tournament. The 2 guys each side of you, and your own. Can't think of many things more likely to scar a noobie for life . . . .

Had this very issue in practice the other day with my own kid no less. He is a left handed shooter and was on the bale next to mine. I shoot right. His arrows face forward and kept hitting my stomach. I had to physically move his quiver myself to remind him about this. Just cause I am dad don't mean he can stab me.

Jake, I would love to see you do a thorough analysis of the 27" Mybo Wave XL riser for barebow. I got one recently, paired with long limbs (72" bow), and it is FANTASTIC for barebow so far. I don't have the tools or the expertise to say why exactly. I have talked with other owners, and they have the same experience. I can say that the balance is incredible: I put a 1.3-lb weight in the bushing below the handle, and that's all it took to more than balance it out. When I shoot with good form, it tips FORWARD. But if you could bring your skills to bear on this fine piece of equipment, I and others would love to know what voodoo is at work.

Good video Jake. People who hold their bow flat on the line are the MOST ANNOYING shooters. So many of them are just oblivious that their bow limbs are literally hitting other people.

Thanks for the video. I have been able to learn a lot from just watching what our coaches teach my kids at JOAD so I’ve been able to find an efficient way of knocking an arrow in a narrow space that works for me. I’d also suggest trying to shoot league if your local shop offers it. That way you can get use to shooting next to different people.

Jake, so glad to see you share this info. My archers shot a tournament last weekend & the shop had more lanes than they should have. So many newbies had no clue for line etiquette. We had archers getting tapped in the back of heads with bows, getting poked with arrows, archers standing over their assigned lane & putting floor quivers in the lane of archer in front of them. Worst of all one newbie pushed one of my archers forward so he could have more space to load (poorly I might add), when my archer was drawing, who then bumped into the archer in front of him that just happened to release at that time, which caused that archer to hit their arm with the string. Luckily the one that was pushed & the one that hit their arm were teammates so there was no issue between them. Took a lot of discussion between archers & finally a judge to fix the issue. We train line etiquette with our archers from day one. Another issue we train is don't walk off the line when an archer next to you is at full draw. Please like this video so more archers will see it & hopefully there will be less issues on the shooting line! Thanks Jake! Keep doing these awesome videos!

line etiquette is truly important if you want to start competing, or even if you happen to shoot in a crowded range. i'm a member of a small archery school and we are running a series of regional archery schools meetings in the form of very well organized unofficial tournaments under WA rules, with judges, scoring and all the regulatory stuff, but without giving prizes,. they are specifically aimed to students and beginners in order for them to learn how a tournament is conducted, how to behave as athletes, and how not to loose points due to penalties in real competitions. people have fun, get to know the rules and make lots of friends from different schools and clubs.

Good advice. It can certainly rattle new archers to be reprimanded by a line judge literally after their first end. This can also be an issue with Recurve archers who use really long V-bars, when stepping off the line. Bottom line, be aware of the folks around you...

That I seem to insist on nocking my arrow “the bad (COVID) way” so frustrates my coach. He kinda gave up because “elbow back” was more important. I hope he doesn’t watch this video! He’s so gonna watch this video. (HI! COACH FERCHO!) My only hope is that I am in Colombia and his English is super meh.

Thank You so much for this video! I can not make my friends / other archers respect their peers. They mostly come form traditional and historical archery background and literally poke others with their bows while making all sorts of wild movements with them. No words, showing the rules etc can make them stop. Most tournaments do not maka a big deal out of it only worsening the problem. I have a left handed friend who uses a 200+ cm longbow. He nocks the arrows while holding it sideways AND stands on as far to the right as he can usually disrupting archers not only from his own target by also on the next right one. Highly annoying.

I remember when I started, that the space was tight, Was outdoors, so I asked someone to move over a bit, was told, in no uncertain terms to 'get used to it!' Got to admid, I did and shooting under covid restrictions felt odd with all that space. As for the canting the bow to nock an arrow, happened to me in my 1st ever comp. I was paired with a longbow archer (I'm recurve) and I was on B on the boss, he was on A, I was at full draw with my first arrow when his bow came right across me as he nocked his 2nd arrow. Being very green to comps, I had no idea what to say to this senior archer who had been around a long time, the judges saw but did nothing, so I waited off the line as he was firing off 3 arrows in 30 seconds, that gave me space and time.

Twirling the arrow helps change the holding layout to palm up instead of palm down which makes it easier to nock. As long as it doesn't interfere with the other archers, I don't see any problem.
