First attempt at a Mortise and Tenon felling cut (spruce tree) (tongue and groove)

After seeing many forms discussing this type of felling technique, my co-worker decided to give it a try on a Spruce tree we were removing.
this was our first, and only time ever using this technique (so of course it didn't go perfectly). The branches in the middle of the spruce tree kept the trunk notch from resting completely into the stump notch.
here is just a few scenarios where this felling technique could be beneficial (from what I've read in other online forms)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Though this method is hardly used. It can be used in certain scenarios where space is limited.
This method allows the tree to fall true to one direction without the risk of it fallen slightly to the left or right. So one example would be.... If you were removing the tree that is growing between two buildings and you absolutely had no room for error, this method could help guarantee the tree will fall true to the direction you want it.
This method has also been seen used in a city setting. If the cut is done right, then trunk notch should lay right into the stump notch.
A tree is usually felled at the sawyer’s chest height, eliminating the crushing blow of the lower trunk onto a flower bed, driveways and sidewalk.
As stated in the video description. The person has never done this type of cut before and had only read about it. He just wanted to try it out🤷🏻‍♂️

To all the curmudgeons who feel the need to post negativity: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so it doesn't accomplish anything that can't be done with a standard notch cut. IMO, it shows he has excellent saw handling skills and knows where the tip of his blade is working on the far side of the tree which takes experience. Maybe you wouldn't want a new operator trying this, but is there any reason it can't be simply be enjoyed as art? Say, maybe like a chainsaw carving ? The operator never claimed to be an expert, or suggest his was the best way. The world really doesn't need a bunch of newly self appointed fun police, in fact, far less would be preferred IMHO. PS: Nice job on the cut!

All the negative comments are from people who didn't read the description of the video. This was literally just a person practicing a type of cut he had only read about. There is nothing wrong with practicing different types of felling techniques when time allows for it.

Not until the very end did it make sense. Could be a very useful cut in a residential setting on a wonky tree for a skilled arborist. Going directly in my back pocket thank you very much.

It really controls the direction of the fall. Even if the tree wanted to lean a bit to the left, it wouldn't snap a 5 inch tenon to do so. A great cut for when precision is really needed.
@kevadams1964

That's a great point. I was wondering if it kept the tree from twisting. I saw a big pine tree do that and then break off and sit straight down onto the ground because it was hung up by the trees around it.
@integr8er66
@integr8er66 Жыл бұрын
@@kevadams1964 Well it can't make a tree fall if there are trees in the way, but yes it will keep it from twisting, but so will a proper hinge, but I see a lot of folks doing that wrong, even on here showing people "how to do it".

There's a few things about this in my outlook ; you've still got to determine what is the right height at which to make your cut , you are going to want to size your felling notch about right and also the sizing of your mortise cuts so that the mortise and the uprights left on the stump handle whatever strain is put on them without breaking away before having a successful felling done . And also even though this looks to have gone well looking at the alignment of the mortise to the notch now left on the stump it appears as though the tree still ended up slightly spun out of a dead straight alignment with the cut so a person still has to make some assessment of just how much help is this going to be in getting the end result that you want or need. One other thing ; I don't think that this is going to work well with trees that have much (if any) rot (or hollow) in their trunk

If you use a Humboldt cut, your "key" will stay in the stump. The conventional cut you used causes trees to belly flop, and so it's less likely to stay in the stump. Humboldt is more useful too because typically the butt of your tree hits the ground first, and swings the top to the ground. If there are any broken tree parts, they're closer to the top, and farther away from you.

A semi-skip chain might help with cleaning out the cut, and increasing RPM needed for a rip cut. Well, then it should be sharper than a butter knife too. Still, I liked the demo and the slow and gentle laying down of the tree seemed pretty safe.

I see this is an old one that's enjoying some new popularity. And, somehow, controversy? WHY?! I think...the people who don't see the point...must have been cutting trees down in VERY open areas. By "open" I mean away from structures, not necessarily other trees. I get the point of this one. I believe it might have some very practical applications. I don't think you'd use it all the time, but I believe it has merit.

Wow...that tenon was about twice as long as needed. After making your face-cut, I like to make my horizontal bore cuts next, to establish the depth of the mortise. This also gives you your width (normally the width of the bar). Then make your vertical bore cuts. Lastly your felling cuts in from each side.

I couldn't figure out the reason for this cut until right at the end. In the case of that particular tree I would have just used a good road and my pickup but in some instances it could be very useful to use this technique even tho it is pretty labor intensive. Also if it was a big tree, say 24- 30 inches and hardwood , you would need to pack some lunch and maybe even a tent. No offense intended.

The reason it pops out of the hole is because you have your bottom cut perpendicular to the ground. You wanna angle cut a face under the that bottom perpendicular cut. So it's like a mouth on the tree.without the downside under your bottom cut it pops it out and off thee hole

As others have said, he's cutting the tree vertically (rip cut) instead of horizontally (cross cut). He's ripping the tree with a cross cut chain (35° angle) instead of a ripping chain (less than 10° angle). This makes the slow cut and small woodchips that is similar to a dull chain. Judging by the plunge cut, he has a sharp saw.
