I decided earlier this year to go ahead and give it an honest try to try and photograph owls this winter and for the last 3 weeks I´ve been out searching for owls, especially the most common one in my region - the Tawny owl.
It took me about 2 weeks of locating an owl in a fairly "photo genic" environment, just so I could start to try and map out it´s behaviors and try to figure out if the owl had an certain pattern to where it tend to move, hunt and rest.
I noticed the owl up in a tree one night when I was out walking my dog in a local forest so I followed up the next day and the day after and every night at approximately the same time the tawny owl sat in the same tree every single night.
The fourth night I decided to leave my dog at home and head out to try and see if I could photograph the owl instead, being a total novice at night photography and knowing very little about it, I brought my head torch and my Z6 in hope of capturing something - never in my wildest imagination I could think of having the encounter I had..
If you´re looking to photograph tawny owls yourself, try to go out during dusk and stay out until midnight, it seems to be where the tawny owl are as most active, look in a some what mixed forest with alot of boreal trees, old oak trees or in old beech trees.
In sweden they love to nest up in old chimneys on some cabins so go look for those as well.
Good luck owling! =)
