The holiday classic “The Nutcracker" has been performed by the New York City Ballet for more than 50 years. But this year, the timeless production actually features something new. Charlotte Nebres, 11, is the first black dancer to win the coveted role of Marie, the young heroine of the story. And her story is just one example of the changing face of the world of classical dance. Elaine Quijano reports.

If mixed people are so called "black" then it would mean that all 'black' men worldwide could totally 'ABANDON' their own fellow 'black' women and strictly 'PROCREATE' with white women only and claim to be 'PRESERVING' the black race / population. And their 50/50 'BIRACIAL' kids with those 'white' women could do the very same thing, and so could their 75% European 'QUADROON' grand kids and 95% European 'OCTOROON' great grand kids. @@PopLife-hb3ks I don't exspect to be able to change your mind, but I operate under the idea that mix race ppl are black if they are part black, the only genuin difference I see is that they will exsperience a different type of discrimination and the ability to have more than one culture. I just feel like isolating mixed race people as just mixed because they don't look black enough to is incredibly devisive and is often used in an inconsistent way. Like everyone I've heard talk about Barak Obama said he's black despite him being mixed. I understand that society often favors black ppl that look closer than white than not, I get that and it sucks, but this is something posative and I don't believe in defying what someone should or should not identify with if that's an aspect of their exsistenc. Though I do look forward to if progress takes us to a point where a very dark skinned girl with 4c hair gets a part like this aswell as equal/equitable opportunities. But if you don't care to see where I'm coming from that's ok, we can just agree to disagree...

That’s cool I guess. But I’m really not interested in whether you care or not that some people are not represented in the classical arts and would like to see people who look like themselves at least once in awhile. I’m sure you don’t see the importance of that (or you just don’t care about the experiences of people who do not look like you). I’m mean I’m sure you see people who look like you represented in a positive way all the time, so you take that for granted. Don’t worry, I really don’t expect someone like you to understand or even care. I’m not shocked by your response.🤷🏾‍♀️

When Obama became president nobody called him the first mixed raced president they called him the first black president. Yes this beautiful talented young lady along with other mixed raced people like Obama and Misty Copeland and others with the title first black such and such in a technical sense are biracial/mixed race and not fully black However All of us African Americans have a mixed background in a technical sense from slavery (unless you came to the U.S. from Africa recently) All I can say is y’all being very petty and missing the whole point! Biracial Awareness. Yes of course there is definitely a different experience between being black and being biracial. There is also a different experience between being a “black” person with a fairer complexion and a black person with a darker complexion (colorism) And isn’t it peculiar how black people are called black and very few I mean very few (in America at least) actually have skin that is colored black? At the end of the day we all bleed red. But it’s kinda a sticky subject. What is your mission? To change laws and make people call mixed raced( who are mixed with black) biracial instead of “first black such and such..?!” It’s difficult because when you are mixed a lot of factors go into your identity, like your complexion, hair texture how black you look all that but even still a mixed person can look white and still self identify as black. There’s no easy answer... Growing up my grandma was brown skin with hazel eyes and long orange/red hair(she was mixed) but I’m light skin with brown eyes and brown hair so yeah I definitely identify as “black” or “African American” but really I’d like to be called “colored”. But at the end of the day it’s all labels and we should not merely find our identities in our racial makeup. Again we all bleed red.

Biracial Awareness. Yes it makes no biological sense but...OKAY...So i am going to address the elephant in the room and that is the ancient one drop rule still does still exist in the world today...but it kind of doesn’t. It does and it doesn’t. However your missing the point that in this day and age a mixed raced person for example Megan Markle and Tamera Mowry-Housley and maybe even Halle Berry could marry/procreate with white men and their children could “pass” and a few generations in you’d never guess their great grand mom or dad was black... A good example of this is former actress turned organic products mogul Jessica Alba. Take a look at her kids. They look Latin/ Hispanic but her husband Cash Warren is biracial and his dad is visibly black but their grandkids look Hispanic/ Caucasian... of course this is just one example... And to clarify I didn’t make up the one drop rule but how this video is titled and this country/world seems to hold it tight and it still exists. But some people in the comments are taking it way too far in my personal opinion. Let’s Celebrate wins for people of color and not point out our differences.
@aa-zq2fr
@aa-zq2fr 4 жыл бұрын
Spiritual Cosmetics It is a win! But imo, it's a win for mixed girls and not necessarily 100% african girls. Like for your Obama example, that brought about the "paper bag rule". It made all black ppl that were his shade or lighter acceptable, but everyone darker too black under the guise of still accepting blk ppl. So yes, eventually hopefully this will lead to progress for all shades.

Yes, she IS mixed. And unlike many other top ballet companies in North America and Western Europe, NYCB has been very slow to train and hire dancers from the Asian diaspora. But let's be honest. The the part of her appearance that has been the biggest hindrance all over the classical dance world, is the fact that she's part BLACK. Black dancers - especially females - were stereotyped as lacking the grace and body types for ballet and in many cases were actively discouraged from studying ballet. By the way, Houston Ballet in the very red state of Texas, cast it's first black Marie/Clara TWENTY years ago. They also promoted Lauren Anderson to the role of principle dancer in the nineties. Years ago, black ballerinas Debra Austin and Tai Jemenez were promoted to principles at Philadelphia and Boston Ballets respectively. And of course, Misty Copeland was promoted to principle at ABT in 2015. Incidentally, all these women were or are exceedingly popular artists in their companies. But in 2019, in a blue state, with countless professional dancers of all types in all genres, in the most cosmopolitan city in the world - New York, we find that New York City Ballet has yet to have a black female principle. You almost have to try NOT to be diverse, for that not to have happened. Good for Charlotte. And good for City ballet for actively trying to diversify their feeder school after having had an atmosphere that was seen by some in the dance world as unwelcoming if not hostile to WOC, especially black women. But what took you so long?

You guys are the same people who get big mad when a biracial person doesnt see themself as black or awknowledge their black side. But still get mad when they do. damn cant please black people. Thank god im from the caribbean where we just see unity and love. Yall black americans just be too much trying to deny people of their blackness. You don't have to be mixed with black to be biracial. However in this case she is so let her own her black side. She is being recognised for it. We should be proud that anyone with any amount of black is being awknowledge. All forms of black needs to be uplifted whether its mixed or full black. Because in other countries being mixed with black doesnt do them any justice especially in asian countries where they are called dirty. Leave the girl be.

Shana-Kae McKnight there is no such thing as “all forms of black” Does anyone say “all forms of white?!?” Biracial is what biracial is - mixed race not black. How often do you see whites or any other group claiming their mixed race individuals as being able to claim 100% of their identity to the point of REPRESENTING the racial group. In the system of white supremacy - biracials are, and have been used to claim that the best version of black is WATERED DOWN black whole the best version of white is PURE UNADULTERATED UNMIXED WHITE this is why this is a problem, and NO, a mixed person does not have the RIGHT to claim themselves to be something that they are not. Black people HAVE THE RIGHT to say that people who are indeed 50% another race DO NOT represent them in their BLACKNESS

Funny enough, my copy of the Nutcracker book as a child had illustrations of a brunette Marie, so I always envisioned her that way. People get into such a fuss about consistently portraying a character with specific physical traits, when 99% of kids probably don't care what the characters' hair/eye/skin colors are.

Barely black at all. Stop with these misleading "First Black" headlines and titles. Girl of color and black girl are not always the same. Most black girls do not look like this barely black girl, they suffer MUCH more racism and colorism because they look OBVIOUSLY black surrounded by people who are hostile and biased against blackness, specifically two-black-parent, four-black-grandparent blackness. This is very dishonest to claim an ambiguous child as "progress" in a world that has ALWAYS given the "first" to the least black-looking girls. Its good only for girls who look like her, daughters of a nonblack parent, she does not give hope to black girls who look like Venus Williams - ACTUAL black girls.

@John Johnson I know. But I know enough multiracial people to know that how they self-identify, is highly personal. I know mixed-race people who identify as biracial, some who identify as black and some who at different times in their lives, have identified as both. I have a cousin who has one black and one white biological parent. Yet he was adopted as an infant by my aunt and uncle, a black couple. He grew up with black parents, lived in an upper middle class black neighborhood and attended a black church. He knows that he is technically biracial but he has always identified as black even though he looks more Caucasian than black. Yet he's never been conflicted about it.

Congrats to Charlotte Nebres ... a very talented DANCER. CBS, why is ethnicity an issue to be highlighted in this report? Will mass media ever allow Americans to move beyond a focus on race? CBS rarely mentions the race of white people in a news report. For others, race seems more important than the event. CBS needs better (non biased) journalism.

It's NEWS because she is black. Pretending that the playing field has always been level for little black girls who wanted to be classical dancers, is an insult. Yes, ballet is hard for everyone. But has a little WHITE woman ever been taken out of a dance line not because she couldn't dance the role, but because her dark skin was deemed too distracting? This happened to Andrea Long at NYCB. Saying that you don't see color doesn't make racism go away. Seeing race and not have it matter is what we should aim for.

@@annayudakhina1416 African students studying in your country frequently complain about the racist treatment they receive at the hands of some Russian citizens. And what is so astounding, is that many Russians have no idea how racist they are or they know and are proud of their racism. They justify it by claiming that it protects their country's national character and ethnic purity. You should read articles about Precious Adams who studied ballet in Russia and had to deal with her teachers' bias against dark skin. I don't understand why people of African ancestry would set foot in your country to study anything. Why would anyone want to go to a foreign country where they aren't wanted? France, England and Germany aren't free of racism but at least they aren't proud of their racial bias.
