I've loved this song for decades. Their harmonies are very tight, I saw them sing it at carnegie hall, sounded exactly the same-- perfect

This song was written for Kate’s son Rufus Wainwright. Rufus later wrote his own song for his mom in response called “Beauty Mark.” Beautiful!

Another gem from the wonderful McGarrigle Sisters - clever and insightful with a dose of whimsy added to the mix - true originals and sorely missed.

One of Kate's very very best. An intoxicating mix of aching joy and sweet, sweet pain.

I so miss Kate and Anna. Whimsy at its best.

so very very well arranged - such a swing - such closeness between the various musicians... I love this one since the end 1970ies - got it on vinyl :-)

This incredibly poetic track did accompaign me to all my lonely poetic journeys towards the Swiss Mountains... I kept me always happy... (Pat, Switzerland)

I'm the 2nd-born son, I have caused far less misery and mayhem to the community.

I think apart from the name, what held the McGarrigles back from stardom was their sarcasm... people who 'get it' oft forget that most don't.

'Apart from the name', do you mean the whole 'Kate and Anna McGarrigle' name? I bet you're right.

If you think it's 'sarcasm' then you don't get it either.

Wonderful. :) But maybe not so great for second- or third-borns to listen to. ;)

Jinny Fisher Yes, Jinny Fisher, it is "wonderful," and a comment I'm sure the girls would appreciate! (; (-:

Yes, Jinny, you're right, as I know from my brother, but we first-borns are often an experiment. Will this work? No, let's try that. It's not (wasn't) easy. Still ain't, pardon the grammar. I'm still the big brother at age 65.

I think you miss the point of the lyrics.

@@MrGjcannon I love the song but my second-born (daughter) found it really upsetting. Of course it's a celebration, and not meant to be a put-down to the next-borns but well "he's that special one No matter what comes next, no matter what comes along Be it another boy or a sweet baby girl The family's the oyster and he is the pearl" But maybe I don't get it! What did I miss? (Real question)

Don't know if I'm right but I think Kate mixed things up in that song. Every FIRST BORN SON were killed during the ten egyptian plague (Exodus 11:5) while Moses was saved when the King of Egypt asked to kill every NEWBORN MALE (Exodus 1:15). Good song anyway.

more fool you for taking this sort of thing seriouslly

The slaughters you speak of are Biblical ones. If they occurred at all, it was in ancient times. Kate McGarrigle's song was written in the 1970s; slaughters of first-born sons had been long out of fashion by then.

@@sebastientanguay4866 Sorry: I misunderstood you. I realize now that you are referring specifically to Kate's lines about Exodus, not to the song's general depiction of the favored status of first-born sons. I think what compelled me to respond is the fact that KZfaq is littered with comments from earnest believers who impose their narrow religious views on subjects of little relevance to those ideas. I misread your comment as being one of those--sorry again!

Funny, there’s no record of that in any Egyptian records. You’d think someone might have noticed.
