"Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews. This performance was the inspiration for a similar scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

@@user-jc8by2wj8g People are very much calling it creepy! It's just that as humans we like to feel "in" and with a group. So when one group is teased, we want to feel part of the dominant group. So the people reason get more likes and get pushed to the top.

Have you heard of re-interpretation? Kind of how like twinkle twinkle little star played in a robotic, slightly distorted monotone can sound creepy, this is a similar affect. Of course you can see the lighthearted side but both are equally as enjoyable.

I don’t know why people say it’s scary. It’s honestly really sweet. A machine was given a voice, and out of all the songs it could have chosen, it chose a love song. It’s like it’s returning all of the love and tears that went into giving it a voice to sing with. Even machines want to love and be loved.

The technological achievement of making a computer sing in 1961 is astonishing, considering that computers back then simply had no off-the-shelf capabilities for that kind of thing. Not just the hardware and the software, but the whole theoretical framework behind speech synthesis and computer-generated music had to be invented from scratch to allow this. To make one of these imposing electronic machines whimsical and charming at the same time took it to a whole other level. This was a brilliant sneak-preview demonstration of what computers were capable of.

Anything replicating human behavior that is not nearly perfect always makes people uneasy. It being 60 years old and made by people that are likely dead makes it much worse. The fact that it's singing a song that many parents would sing to their children makes it seem almost as though the nonhuman entity is attempting to make people relax. It's almost like a demon imitating human speech. It's difficult to rationalize fear, but I hope I can at least give you an idea of what someone might think is creepy about this.

You can even hear how it sings in the same way that a nerd asking a girl to go to the dance would sing it and how pleasantly slow it sounds. All of these details built up to this and because of their work, every other device today speaks now. People are calling it creepy, but just imagine being there when it happened. I can just see a group of people gathered around a computer, smiling and laughing while they listen to it sing, after hours of experimentation trying to make it happen. This was something amazing back then.

And it still is fantastic, i hate when people say this is creepy, no vocaloid will be here without this and this is so soothing and calming and its a token in time really, its absolutely fascinating on how we get to look back at these things and see how much its changed and how it was back then, they must have been so proud to invent a voice singing without living or dead.

@@juststorm8674 I know it was an enormous accomplishment back then, and it really was something magical. However, I can see why people think this is unsettling. There's probably a better psychological explanation for it somewhere, but it's something about the tone of voice and how old it sounds that enduces a feeling of anxiety in people who weren't from that era.

It feels like it will always be honest to you and say what it feels, and it sounds like a curious person who isn't maliciously ignorant but just wholeheartedly clueless and just does what it thinks is nice.

I can imagine the hype and excitement the programmers had after they finally got it to actually work

Anything that a programmer manages to get working brings enough joy for them.

It was probably actually not as high as you think until just after it all worked... Knowing how programming something this complex works, they probably got very close hundreds of times before it finally worked, so until it got through the entire song without glitching, it was probably like "Well, let's try it again for the hundredth time... ok the beginning still works... here comes the pain point... holy shit it's working.... HOLY SHIT IT FUCKING WORKED!!!!!"
