Hi Ben, I´m another "in middle 30´s trying to skate for the first time" kind of guy :D Love your vids! I became such a huge nerd on skateboards just because of you, and I´m only in this for 4 months now! I started with an 8.38, I´m 6.4 and shoe size 12. then I tried on an 8" and had some fun with it, but honestly, its too small and too short for me, so I jumped to an 8.5, which is harder to move, but because I dont have to use up so much strength and focus just to keep my balance, since half my foot is not hanging off the deck, I can focus more on doing other shit, so its worth it. on the other hand I did get comfortable after riding the 8" for a week when I first got it, so its really about what you prefer: easier time standing and landing or less weight. however I dont think I´d ever try anything below 8.25 again, that would probably be a nice compromise between light weight and having enough space for my feet. just my short story about deck sizes :-)

But ive found that they push me a lot! Like I feel better on a board now at 34, than ive ever felt in my almost 20 years of skating.... I enjoy your content man. Subbed. I found my old indy stage 8 129's and Venture Awake high 129's. Cant wait to put them on a new deck. Havent skated in like 15 years and I hear everyone uses WIDE boards and trucks these days so who knows. I might be daring/dumb and just get a slightly larger 8 inch deck and slap these smaller trucks on and have a skate for old time sake. 7.625 trucks on an 8 inch deck ; ) Call me a madman in 2022.

The thing you said about frustration to not land tricks on a new board is exactly what I felt few weeks ago. I was riding an old Mini Logo (because I just broke my local shop deck) really broken on the tail and nose but still skatable. I did 2 or 3 session with it, and when I went back to a new local shop deck, I was unable to do a decent kickflip. It took me a lot of time to understand where to put my feet, how to do it etc... now I am happy with my kickflips ! (Sorry if my english sucks, I am french haha)

I gotcha with that feeling - I am realistic though. I've never been a big trick guy, and I'm 40 with a knee injury, I know where my limit is. BUT... What is a good indicator that you need to replace parts just to increase performance/stability/Confidence? I pulled my board from storage, It's 15 years old, Deck is great, Trucks are great. Bushings are squishy as all get out, and I think I've got one set of bearing that are binding just enough to make feel that I need to replace some stuff.

@bendegros6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you just need a bit more time. Also try small things that you won't bail on but that will give you confidence like a couple of lines in the concrete or an upside down skateboard. You already know the level of things where you lose confidence so try smaller obstacles until you are sure of your ability. I have lot's of things that I know are within my ability but out of my confidence range. I might never learn blunt to fakie on ramps. It's within my skill level but I have a mental block. It's a bucket list trick.

U gotta try Polars 8.25 its literally life changing! If i was going to go to bareback to design a deck i wouldnt even waste their time i wud just say give me 100 8.25 polar decks! Perfect shape not to pointy not too boxy right in the middle on nose and tail perfect wheelbase 14.25 (dont let the sticker fool u bc its says 14.125" wb i talked to them and they mass produced those stickers at bareback and have to use them now, lol they know theyre wrong) and its 31.875" long 7.125" nose and 6.75" tail. Literally pefect ratios all around i got it on some thunder 148's and some conical 52 formula 4's and swisses with mob m-80 grip and of course Nike blazer highs for shoes (all i ever skate, best shoes ever) And my setup is literally perfect i wouldnt change a thing i was so confident in this polar shape i bought all of the 8.25's my shop got in with this shipment 4 of them (good thing i get em for wholesale!). Love the channel considering doing something similar if i do ill shout u out as one of my inspirations to do it! Also whats the key to ripping so hard at such an old age? Its my birthday today im 29 but feel 49....lol
@bendegros6 жыл бұрын
Look me up on instagram and send me a picture of the deck. Now you have me wanting one. As far as skating well when your older..... Lifestyle has more to do with it than anything. I have been clean and sober since 2003 so that helps. I also eat a mostly vegan diet( i cave on pastrys and cookies here and there). Also I cross train 3 or 4 times a week and skate almost every day(being self employed gives me some flexibilty with my schedule). I am skating the best I have in years, probably since my mid or early 20's. Definitely the number 1 reason is that I am on my board almost every day and all the other reasons add up to feeling sharp most of the time.

I hope you do start a channel. I want to see more channels by like minded skaters.

Just ran across this comment and this is exactly what I was looking for. Polar shapes are the best. I've been only skating 8,0 polars for years, but i was now wondering If I should upgrade to 8,25 polar with 148 thunders (I've been on the 147s for so long) I've been thru a heavy leg injury and although I only skate ledges and flatground I feel like I will manage to maintain my bag of tricks on a slightly bigger skateboard but being also "safer". Upgrading to 8,1 and keeping my 147s might be a too little change. Thoughts?
@ssbsts12393 жыл бұрын
@@friturass honestly 8.25 Polar with Thunder 148’s and 51-53mm Formula Four conicals is the best setup I’ve ever had in my 20 years of skating I’ve put damn near half my city on to this setup, when Premier gets their Polars in they’re gone within a few days every time. Pontus Alv personally designed all their shapes and he did a helluva job I’ve talked to him multiple times personally about it. I’m not really doing fliptricks rn bc of my back so I’m on a Polar 8.38 slick with 149’s and 52’s but my usual all around deck is their 8.25 with 148’s and 51-52’ formula four conical and sometimes classics too. I guess my question to you wud be how tech do u get? I’m old and fat now so I don’t do tricks like say kickflip back tail Bigspins out any more that I did when I was 17 so I don’t need a smaller deck. U can still get tech on 8.25 with 148’s tho and even bigger I’m just saying like if I still flipped my board a ton I wud prolly ride Polars 8.125” or Krooked’s 8.18” with 148 Standard Hollows (I don’t think I cud ever go down to dinky 147’s again they just feel horrible and don’t turn as good)
@friturass3 жыл бұрын
@@ssbsts1239 I feel you man. I don’t get that tech at least in combos. I do pretty much all the basic grinds combined with nollies / switch. The most technical trick I’ve probably done is sw crook fakie flip out, but on a daily basis I just do the sw crook, you know. I’m afraid the 8,25 + 148s feels too big I need to “think” about popping my tricks strongly; thats why I was considering the 8.125. Man, too many possible combinations in skateboarding. At least I know I’m sticking with Polars and Adidas. Helluva combo!
