FIRST DRIVE: Aston Martin DB12 - 671bhp Game Changer | Top Gear

The ‘world’s first Super Tourer’ is Aston’s claim, although that’s a term that has been bandied around before, applied to cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo and Ferrari Roma that bridge the GT/Supercar divide. That’s where the DB12 is aiming though.
It will be V8 only. No hybrid assistance to give a useful power (and weight…) boost, either. The final figures are 671bhp and 590lb ft. More than either the Porsche or Ferrari can muster. 0-62mph in 3.6secs since you’re asking, and still a 202mph top end.
UK pricing hasn’t yet been announced. But prices are going to have stepped up markedly - and deservedly - from the DB11. Expect a £185,000 starting point.
So, is Aston’s mission to become a genuine sporting brand, rather than a touring one, finally taking shape? TopGear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage heads to Monaco to drive the DB12 and find out.

Prob not performance but its WAY more beautiful than any ferrari and any lamborghini aston martin makes the cars elegant and smooth. Their lines are beautiful agressive but clean. I love aston martins but we gotta be honest aston martin has the most beautiful supercars in the world

Meh. Neither DB11, this DB11.5 nor the current DBS Superleggera can match the DB9 and the Vanquish. Those cars were designed with the golden ratio in mind. These newer ones... weren't.

@@HiddenWenit improves on both. I always belt the DB11 had so much potential, but let down by some soft curves and too much black, which resembles unpainted plastic This is what the DB11 should've looked like, and therefore I'm in love. There's very very few new cars that excite me like this does

Loved Aston Martin design since I was a little kid (actually funky that I as a little kid could make that assessment…🤔) and to me they still are the best looking sports cars out there. 😅

One of the best new supercars to hit the market in the last 10 years. Aston doesn't need to venture far from the status quo for their looks, they never had to, but the new little design elements here are incredible. The sweeping look of those front fender vents are top-tier, and the car looks good from every angle. It seems like they spent a lot of time on handling, rather than updating other things, which is good. It seems the recent Aston GT's have been a mixed-bag overall and now it looks like they've brought racing experience to the table. I love this car, and appreciate the fact is not a hybrid, and doesn't have capacitive buttons everywhere inside. You can't search for a function in a menu when sliding sideways through a mountain hairpin.

very nicely presented. It looks like the most interesting Aston for quite some time, and a lot of the reason is the grille which harks powerfully back to the DB5 era.

Wish they had made the rear end a little more aggressive to stand it apart from the DB11. Maybe just dial exhausts would have done it. I hope they’ve sorted the noise out too, recent v8 Astons haven’t sounded too great due to the OPF’s. An AM needs that bite and bark, along with the beauty of them it then doesn’t matter if they’re not the quickest cars haha. This is great step up. A shame they didn’t put the v12 in it. I sense there will be a special edition at some point though, maybe. Love that spec too.

Such a beautiful car. Even more pretty than the DB11. I am disappointed that the DB”12” doesn’t have a V12 out front though. But compared to the AMG and M’s new 6 cylinder and laughable 4’s in the AMG Mercedes. I guess I should be happy this has at least a v8. Aston could do something differently though and put the first 14 cylinder in this though or better yet a V16!!! That would make it the most crazy and one to have in the world of super cars.

@@MTreddevil12 I’m not an engineer that’s for them to figure out. Bugatti were going to put a V16 in there Veyron so I’m sure it’s possible to do something or do a V12 up front then the 4cyl out back for better weight distribution. The Prius crowd would cry no doubt 😁😂🤣

For a company that doesn't have the deep-pocket backing of VW Group, I think the "better DB11" compromise was the correct choice, considering they're set to revamp their entire line (plus new additions) within the next couple of years.

There was no DB8 in the past because Aston Martin afraid that their customers will associate that their flagship model is using a mere V8 instead of the usual V12. Fast forward to 2023, and their DB12 is using a twin-turbo V8.. what an irony 😅

Not mentioned on any of the comparisons is the ancient Jaguar F-Type, which is nearing the end of it's run. But a 580HP all wheel drive coupe or convertible is nothing to sneeze at and can be had new for half the Aston's price.

@@quacktac They are the same class of car, amazing technology. I recently bought a 2016 low milage 3.0 S coupe, manual transmission. All the leather, analogue gauges, 20s, big brakes etc, $50,000. No, it's not as fast but how many people go over 100mph, much less 200? Do we drive the Col de whatever every day and spend our evenings on Monaco? Well, I do, in my dreams, but the rest of the time I live in reality.

@@quacktac Now that Jaguar has announced that the 2024 model year will be the last for ICE engines getting a car like an F-Type is more important. Even Mazda is hinting that they will be going towards an EV Miata, which just kills the car. I'm old, I am glad I will never have to get an EV.

It definitely is a great-looking car, sounds all right, and seems to handle very well. It's neither a Porsche, nor a Ferrari - but it doesn't have to be, as Aston Martin is coming into its own. I would buy it, even just to look at and sit in it (I'm legally blind and therefor can't have a license - oh well....).

I don't love the MercAston cars generally, with the DBX as the sort of excemption. I mostly like the DBX. I don't particular like the looks of the DB12(8), but unlike the DB11 i don't dislike it, and that makes a difference. Even bigger: The interior doesn't particularly speak to me, but i outright hate the interior of the DB11, so that's a huge upgrade imho. Of the three mentioned cars, the Roma, the 911 Turbo and this, for the first time since the DB9, i'd take the MercAston. Let's see, but i feel they're onto to something with this car.

2:30 It's crazy that we can get 670 bhp from a 4L V8 engine. Not that long ago, you need 6.5L and V12 to create the same amount of power (and yes, I'm talking about Lamborghini Murcielago SV).

Until Aston Martin decides to get out of the dark ages and use a dual clutch transmission, they will always be substandard. In the DB 12 was, up until this point, my favorite car in the world. The turbo S - dual clutch. Ferrari Roma - dual clutch. For the price that Aston Martin is charging, unforgivable.

I get that its probably better for performance and everything, but the whole point of the large tourer is the experience not necessarily performance and the V12 made this model worth having. I wouldn’t spend 400k on a probably over priced v8 tourer when i could get one from Mercedes for half that.

1 cargo ship emits the same amount of carbon emissions as 50 MILLION cars. But yeah the db12 having a v8 not a v12 is totally gonna save the planet

no one understands this, unfortunately. The 17 largest cargo ships in the world pollute more than all cars currently in usage.. but yeah, let's go electric onto the cars. Not saying that having a city without diesel fumes is not a good thing... but what has one thing to do with the other?!
