First Drive in 23 Years! The Old Land Rover 109 NADA Moves Again.

Today we get back on #475, this is the other Land Rover 109 NADA we have with the Chevy 250 inline 6 swapped in. We went in determined to drive this one for the first time. It has been sitting for at least 23 years. Some interesting engineering was found while replacing the clutch slave cylinder.

What a great truck! The OG SUVs. Thanks for bringing them back to life! The inspection hole is to adjust the pressure plate! The older three finger pressure plates can be adjusted for preload. Need access to the nuts.

That makes sense, our 2.25 2a has a factory looking inspection plate on the bell housing.

I worked on Leyland stuff back in the day and have to say the Racing Green Machines are always an interesting treat of engineering to work on.

It is kind of fun, quite a change of pace compared to the modern stuff we were typically working on day in and day out. Had to be interesting working on that stuff in period.

Awesome i knew it was that slave cylinder! Vent hole for the clutch! Glad it’s running now for the next part! Sasha needs to go for a drive!

I've had a 1952 Series 1 SWB, with the same crude drilled opening on top of the bell housing...(some) later models do have an inspection hole with cover plate on the same place... Must be if the clutch gets stuck, then you can "unstuck" it with a lever or crowbar 🙈🙈🙈

One of our 4 cylinder 2A's has a factory cover in the bell housing, it's interesting that a lot of people have the same crude hole made but people are saying to access the adjusting nuts for the pressure plate so that makes sense.

Just had to replace my clutch slave on Monday there fir exact similar problem was leaking and found the inner ram stuck inside too , glad to say it’s back working I just need to get my brakes adjusted up right think I need one new snail adjuster on fds upper as it sized on tight ever other one all free but fir my own ocd will replace them all so that’s six . Anyways po has opened a hole which some gearboxes where fitted with a inspection cover thus was to see if clutch was needing replaced or help free it off if vehicle not used in long time and it parked up wet they stick on , one other thing use of first gear is usually only used on hills or off trading all others times it second gear used to pull off in also make sure your in high and not 4x4 when in use on roads . Nice to see her moving and stopping you will soon get use to her behaviour plus build muscles in arms try when at stop or turning from a stand still to turn steering when moving you find it a lot easier, bar that enjoy driving her about plus be good idear to get a second set of wheels and tyres for off roading to change into .

Good that you have yours going. I noticed our 88” 2a had an inspection plate in it. It will have a correct set of tires back on down the road when it’s a little more road worthy.

@@LostCauseRanch oh I hope you get her back in road , I have three 88” s3 blue I use near everyday the s2a and a series 1 I yet to start as it need a inspection to gets it owners documentation then I can start it’s restoration but there demanding vehicles needing attention like most old vehicles always one thing or other but I wouldn’t have it any other way . take care m8

I didn't realise that any of our old British classic LandRovers made it over the pond , i'm pleasantly surprised that you're interested in them . Perkins diesel or Rover V8 ( Old Buick alloy design ) were popular engine swaps over here , original old parts supply is still brilliant btw , some great independant specialists over here .

Yes, there is a little bit of a cult like following over here for some. It is interesting that this particular model was designated just for North America way back then. I imagine the Chevy 6 cylinder this one has swapped was popular because of local availability. I have some of those specialists helping with parts right now.

@@LostCauseRanch , At the time that Landie was made in post war bankrupt Britain we had an export or die mantra , unfortunately though whilst our vehicles were well built and fine for local transport needs in Britain many were just not as enormously built nor rugged as the American , African or Australian continents demanded , and the likes of Toyota demolished the market in the 70's .

@@LostCauseRanch , Although nowadays they seem to make more sense compared to more modern classic stuff because of their simple fixable designs and because of the excellent parts back up , compared to Japanese trucks especially .

I have read that they are popular in the States, even Sylvester Stalone own a series Landy. I think that may have been his in the film Cliffhanger.

That is great, another old timer on the way to recovery!. Well in body anyway. The engine really needs a Rover engine.. As far as why one would put a hole in the bell housing goes, all I have is to see what's happening in there. A neater hole with a cover over it would be better, either rubber bung or tapped holes for a cover with screws, not the mess that did though.

Yes, that is kind of what we planned as well. Clean up the hole and make a clean cover for it and tap some holes in there to secure it. This one will likely stay with the Chevy engine since we have the other that has the Rover 2.6.

I have a bell housing with the same modification. Even looks to have been crudely done in the same method by drilling . Indeed I wondered why as well? Perhaps aligning the engine and gearbox wasn't going to well!

It may have been to make sure that the release bearing was clear of the clutch levers when the pedal was fully up. There was a popular repower of Landrovers in Australia using a GM six cylinder engine, the Holden 186 which is superficially similar to the larger GM engine observed in this Landrover. Chrysler Hemi six cylinder engines were also used.

hole in the bell housing , betting had trouble putting the engine in so made that hole to bolt the clutch on after

That is a good possibility I think. Just seems like a lot of effort into doing something incorrectly.

Yes, we have a similar problem here in Iowa as you guys. But fortunately this one sat parked on asphalt when it didn’t move for years. But that’s not to say it isn’t rusty, it will still need a chassis and some bulkhead work.

when the clutch rust together in a due to swim and you driven it for and hour trying to brake the clutch free with your foot on the pedal and you dont have the tools how else are you going to free it off. Good bush mechanics dont ask :-)

Great stuff, fabulous NADA and sounds amazing ( I know its not the origional 6 pot). That rattle sounds like a prop shaft UJ to me. No idea for the hole other than lazy engineering! Needs a small plate and tapped holes to make a more 'official' looking inspection hatch.

Yes, it looks like it is in the front shaft. I think we will clean up the hole and make a nice cover plate. No more teeth marks.

Some people are saying for clutch adjustment which makes sense since our other 2A has a factory inspection cover plate on the bell housing. You are dead on with the other two.

why is it called a NADA in the states and just a 109 sw in the rest of the world?

It stands for North America Dollar Area, so it was the models specifically configured and imported for the US and Canada.

0:44 "clutch does not disengage" No When you "engage" the clutch, the tension on the plates is released, allowing them to slip. If it "does not disengage", they would continue to slip rendering vehicle immobile. You probably also think people require their homes having a hot water heater.
