I just replaced my Alfa Romeo Giulia with a Volvo V60 and I can totally relate to what you're saying about feeling generous and kind on the road. While I used to sometimes behave like a BMW driver in disguise (because the Alfa is actually better handling and more engaging than BMWs), I've completely changed my driving style to just getting up to the speed limit and wafting along, leaving a good gap with the vehicles in front of me etc. And the new V60 is supposed to be their "most dynamic car yet" :D.
@NathanMannin
@NathanMannin Жыл бұрын
Interesting change of car, those Giula’s are gorgeous! Was your ownership relatively trouble free? It is a very strange change of narrative though isn’t it? I’m glad someone else can relate to my nonsensical feelings I have when driving my Volvo! 😆 Is that the brand new V60 you have?
@PriitKaru
@PriitKaru Жыл бұрын
@@NathanManninI could say my Giulia was relatively trouble free, although at 6 years old and out of warranty I did have to change some seals in the engine (very low cost job) and the front drive shaft (a very costly part which I luckily managed to get 2nd hand). The Giulia is an epic driver's car, it really is, and it's stunning to look at. But for an everyday product, it isn't perfect, the overall UX in everyday use and in city driving is let down by some software tuning and the huge turning circle (like in old Volvos hehe). But if you really like to drive your car near the limit of it's capabilities, it's totally worth owning, I have not experienced a better chassis tuning and steering, and I'm saying this while my car before the Giulia was the G20 BMW 3-series (also an interesting switch that was, the dealership told me :D). I got the brand new style V60 but from 2019. I had been lurking for these for years but they have become obtainable now. Volvo as a brand has always sympathised to me and the current interior and exterior designs definitely play a big role in upping the desirability. I also wanted an estate body and something I can get a warranty on. My short ownership has been sublime, the experience is great, the car oozes quality from every corner. But it is definitely not as dynamic as the Giulia.

Nice V8 ! That sound and AWD reactivity are just mind blowing ! I'll give you my 2 cents, I have a MY12 S80, diesel FWD, nothing to do with this power-wise BUT I see you don't have the Four-C suspension on the center console, so you must have the Comfort chassis hearing how you described the car's behavior on tight corners and the lack of steering feedback ? I smiled as I had the same sensations with it as I also have the Comfort chassis, one of the reasons being the original shock absorbers, from Sachs, are very soft and have a long course. It is indeed incredibly comfortable but as time and mileage pass, they just give up under the weight of the car on the front axle (and with a V8, it is probably worse than with a 2.0 L5). While I had no idea of the way the original shocks handled, I upgraded to Koni Special Active shocks and a few other tweaks from iPd USA (rear anti-sway bar, end links) along with new front suspension arms to beef up the suspension while keeping the original springs to preserve ride height. I obviously lack the power, but it gave me confidence to trash it in the corners at speed like never before. And sure the seats are not exactly supportive, but guess what, with the beefed up suspension, I'm not even sliding off my seat anymore because now the whole car tilts INSIDE the corner and not outside. Once the front shocks are upgraded, you will immediately notice steering feedback. You will loose a bit of that extreme comfort, but with 17" wheels, should be better than my 18". Drive safe!
@NathanMannin
@NathanMannin Жыл бұрын
Thank you! : ) Yeah the very soft forgiving ride is one of the most surprising highlights for me in this car! If I was to keep one of these long term I would most definitely do some changes to firm it up slightly to induce more feedback. There’s a setting in the S80 to change steering feel, but that didn’t inspire confidence either. That’s a very interesting take on your modifications though and how transformed the car, thank you for sharing! Losing some ride comfort for more driver engagement is most definitely worth it in my opinion! Which model engine is in your S80?
@airfrancerider369

@@NathanMannin I feel better in this car than in my apartment to the point of thinking to buy S80 seats just for home ! I can't tell you for the adjustable steering as it was an option and I don't have it. On mine it's straight forward : bad shocks = vague steering. If you have that option, it should be better but if the comfort shocks are worn, it will not improve the feedback by much. Keep in mind this car was designed for the American market, the handling was decided accordingly : exclusively for the highway as every long distance cruiser. What you can do in the first place inexpensively is flush the power steering fluid and change the small expansion tank. There is a filter inside that cannot be replaced. With time, the fluid becomes brownish instead of dark green and it clogs the filter. I noticed a small improvement feedback-wise after flushing the system. But I totally relate, the ease of driving this car is astounding, I do drive with one finger sometimes, even with no hands. The steering wheel centers itself after turning so easily that you barely need an input. My S80 is a MY2012 D5204T3, the inline 5 Diesel 2.0 163bhp/400Nm. It was a limited edition in France called "Edition Luxe", basically a mix between Momentum and Executive hence the 18" inches wheels. The engine is not a warrior but it is insanely reliable and as a first car, it was already almost impossible to insure so a more powerful powertrain was definitely not an option. Well if you need my opinion on certain mods, feel free to ask as I've done about everything possible to make it handle better so it should be in my book ahah

Such a classy car and yes this is how it's meant to be driven. I can only imagine what the first and previous owner replaced this with as nothing is ever as comfortable as a Volvo well unless it's a Big Citroën with Hydromatic suspension like an XM or a C6. So your only options are really another Volvo or a downgrade to a German premium brand or Japanese one although a new DS is not bad. They are very comfy and classy.

I’ve always wanted a Volvo and when I found out they put V8’s in the S80, it was inevitable I would buy one! Supremely comfortable but also discrete and understated which I love! I’m intrigued to see what he bought too, I could imagine he may have sold it due to fuel economy and it sitting in the highest tax band. C6’s are extremely intriguing, it’s just the looks which put me off! I suppose a like for like comparison if you want comfort, luxury, a V8, all for a reasonable price, would be a Lexus LS 430!

Love this video! :-) Volvo seats are the spongiest too! From the smallest c30 to the biggest s80 - they’re the same level of super soft comfiness 😎 Do be careful when driving a Volvo hastily… my two volvo’s dealt with big changes in direction, or shifts in weight terribly sometimes. Merc’s forgive, Audi’s also and Porsche’s let you know what’s happening. These ones with their heavy reinforced steel chassis’ don’t. Drive it like an officer - break OR accelerate and turn with constant acceleration. Merry Christmas mate, upload more from this wonderful car!

Thank you very much! I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on these seats for so long, I didn’t know the small C30 had them too! 😃 Appreciate the tips! It has become quickly apparent in my ownership that the car doesn’t like the twistes so much or changes of direction like you said, so I’ve definitely dialled it down compared to how I normally drive my C63 😆 Then again, the S80 is more about wafting which I’m starting to come to terms with! Merry Christmas to you too, more videos on the way! 😄

@NathanMannin
@NathanMannin Жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends what parts you’re after? It’s based on the EUCD platform which is shared across cars such as the Ford Mondeo, S Max, the Land Rover Freelander etc. I’ve heard the brakes are the same as the ones you get on a freelander, which are much cheaper than buying from Volvo direct, even though they’re exactly the same. Parts wise, they should be relatively cheap!

@NathanMannin
@NathanMannin Жыл бұрын
Fair comment, although isn’t the 4C expensive to replace if you need to make replacements? I have tried the steering force level at the highest setting, but it just feels a bit too heavy and artificial for my liking, it does improve a bit of confidence though.
@jaleger2295
@jaleger2295 Жыл бұрын
@@NathanMannin 4C is expensive only if you buy OEM parts. If you buy absolutely identical part but from Monroe - it’s only slightly more expensive than regular. But with 4C it’s a completely different feeling, in comfort mode it’s even more relaxed and in advanced it feels like a go cart. Plus 4C is extremely reliable. Easily will do 150-200,000 km. My S80 had at least 300k and 4C was still somewhat decent performing
