FIRST DRIVE! New Ferrari Roma Spider Review | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat

Why is the new Ferrari Roma Spider the biggest challenge for the famous Italian supercar manufacturer? Because this is meant to represent the spirit of La Dolce Vita. And capturing the spirit of a 1960s film in a car is hard. You can’t just add more power or more grip. You need to tap into people’s emotions. You need to bottle lightning or at least trap it in the glovebox.
Of course Ferrari has done it in the past with cars like the 250 California and Daytona Spider. But somehow it seems increasingly difficult with modern cars. Nonetheless, a return to a fabric roof rather than the hard top of the Portofino is a good start because it instantly seems more glamorous. It will also furl and unfurl in just 13.5 seconds and at speeds of up to 37mph.
That’s not to say that the Spider is all style and no speed, because with a 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8, putting out 611bhp through a twin-clutch gearbox, it is capable of 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. The steering has the familiar Ferrari sharpness to it and the chassis, despite a 30 per cent reduction stiffness compared to the coupe, remains very capable when you’re on a good piece of road. And we certainly found a good piece of road on Sardinia; quiet and sinuous, with a feeling of being up in the mountains yet within sight of the sea, it was pretty magical.

It's too small. Well, might be, ofc depending on drivers height. I wonder how Henry got in and had space for legs since he's over 190cm if not mistaken. I'm 199cm and slim but I had barely space for legs, on longer trips it would be felt.

I've only seen the coupe in person but what really struck me was how good that painted lower front grille looks in a bright color like ferrari red. Dont think I really have seen/heard it highlighted in reviews (press cars seem to be more reserved tones) but I thought it was really attractive and will age well.

The Roma is a great looking car, and does those Ferrari things well. But I just really dislike the cabin design (especially that incongruous plasticky center screen which will rapidly date the interior, and the haptic controls) And if I had the dough to purchase one of these, would be a dealbreaker.

Beeaaauuutifully shot piece and it asks, I think, a very good question - does it have a Ferrari soul? It seems so easy now to get caught up in figures, stats, performance, technology, thinking more is better and too much is just about enough. No. This is where driving is at, for me. In enjoying the experience that you take, but also what the car gives you. Well done, Ferrari. I think this is the car I'd be eyeing up, should I ever be lucky enough to have £200k to spend on a car...

Arguably the prettiest Ferrari since the 308. While most attention tends to be on the 296 and the 812, the Roma may actually be the most enduring in terms of its placement in the Ferrari stable. Will it become an icon like the 365GTB? I wouldn't bet against it.

What an impressive, beautiful car. And the Roma is finally a Ferrari that looks just so good in any other colour than red. But, I must say the sound of this V8 is far from F355 era and you get an equally beautiful car with better sound in form of the LC500 Convertible. If you can live with the badge, you get much better value for money - and I love that equally to great driving pleasure…

Personally I thought I would not be budged from my love for the AM Vanquish 2014 onwards convertible, but I have to say this car looks so sleek, stylish, even sexy, this colour brings out all its curves, plus I agree totally that the steering wheel is far to fussy but do you need to be playing around with this stuff when it has Apple CarPlay … hope the sound system is as good as it looks …. Yes please ….

I just can't fathom why carmakers insist on making these 2+2 convertibles. Not only do they look worse than simple two seaters and you can't fit actual people in the backseats anyway. Benz has done that with new SL too. Other than that Henrys review is as goods as ever and this video is stunning.

With the roof up, it looks great 👍 but I am not so persuaded by the looks of it, roof down. The rear seems a little too humpy...the noise is a little disappointing for me too. Perhaps in the metal, it comes together better, but it is not the most photogenic Ferrari of recent years.

Not a flattering color for this car, but refreshing to see fenders without the logos. The contrasting airfoil in the back looks like a vent for the rear motor. I agree that the interior is too fussy for the dolce vita crowd--of carefree adventures and guiltfree indulgences until cinematic fate intercedes (instead of Marcello and Emma or Sylvia or Paula, Henry Catchpole driving this car in the hills reminds me of Vittorio Gassman and Jean Louis Trintignant in Il Sorpasso, eek).

Ferrari is stubbornly all-in on haptic. We know they know people hate it, because they have added the little indents. But that’s just Ferrari telling everyone they are wrong to hate haptic. Competitors who give customers what they actually want will take market share.

Would it be nice for Ferrari to make an original looking dashboard... Then work the electronics into the beautiful elegant chrome dials.. La Dolce Vita would look more Catherine Hepburn rather than the Star Trek Enterprise ?... I getting to really admire the looks of the Roma but the interior is seriously busy.

Henry is a star and the production is just epic. But I can't help being a bit cynical about this car. True, the engine is amazing and in the right colour the Roma looks gorgeous- and you cant say that all the time about a Ferrari. The thing is, this car is a 'handbag'. Its the vehicle version of a Birkin. The hottest and latest accessory the must haves must have. Its like the Range Rover Evoque when it came out. All the 'gals' wanted one. It will probably make huge amounts of money, but long term not a collectable. Oh, and the interior, whilst it looks good, is a pain to use. Going haptic might be trendy and look cool but it isn't practical for those of us who drive fast.
