I first heard this song at this show as a teen who had gone to the Andy Williams studio with my aunt to see the Osmonds who were pretty regular on Andy Williams show. I was not real happy that the Osmonds were not there until I saw Bobby Hatfield do this song. It was so emotional hearing this song & I became a life long fan. I have heard others do this song but his is the one I remember. During the Vietnam war this song got a lot of airplay & even teens in school had it played for their sweathearts.

This is from an appearance on The Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield singing. Later, Andy comes out with the other “brother” Bill Medley. Hatfield passed away, but Medley was still performing in Las Vegas until the shutdown. Who sang the song was determined by a coin toss. Bill was happy that he lost. Medley sings the closing song in “Dirty Dancing” with Jennifer Warnes.

Music really can transform your sense of time. Not only the universal "takes one back to the first time you heard it; where you were: whom you wrote with, but humans have the ability to sing a song in their heads and get the duration correct to within 5% or so. I saw that somewhere and it feels like it matches my experience.

fun-fact: I was introduced to this song in the early 1990s ... I've been to a concert of the great, great David Hasselhoff!!! He sang that song live, which he recorded in the late 80s - got that one on vinyl :-) btw: Ddid you know, that David Hasselhoff was born as "David Michael Hasselhoff", so thatÄs why his "Knight Rider"-name became "Michael" ...!? XD

As much as I know- the song was written for some prison themed movie in the 50s. The brothers version is the best known one. This is Hatfield (I don’t know if I pronounced it right)- he had a much higher voice than the other brother who was singing more in Bass voice. They each had their solo carriers. That’s about everything I can recall now but the song is wonderful and brings back memories for all of us I think.

I to sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983, as we danced to it with our oldest (but at the time 18 months) child. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

I was a kid in elementary school when this was released, and I have memories of hearing this on the readio when it first came out. A true classic. Great reaction!

Earlier in the live performance, this was on the Andy Williams Show. Andy asked Bill and Bobby about the name 'Righteous Brothers'. Bobby explained, they were playing Down South (in an era when white people weren't listening to Soul music) Bobby said, "A young black soldier stood up and yelled That's Righteous Brother, and they adopted the name." Also, when Andy asked them to sing their latest song, 'Unchained Melody', Bobby said, "That's me. I do that one." Andy looked at Bill and asked, "Why?" Bill sheepishly said, "I didn't think it would be a hit."

After rehearsing this song for a while, Bobby was on his way home when he got an inspiration or idea, he called Phil Spector and went back to the studio to make a change and that is how we got the high note and verse "I ah ah ah ah really need your love", so glad that he came up with it

I was a young adult in 1965, and when I hear this song, I think of the Vietnam War. So many friends were drafted, and they wondered if their girlfriends or wives would be waiting for them if they made it home.

The version you heard in Ghost was the studio cut. This is a live performance on the Andy Williams show. The arrangement is slightly different especially at the end.

Although Bobby made the last note look easy, he wasn't certain that he could hit it. If you noticed the smile on Andy William's face after the song was over and the handshake. He knew how unsure Bobby was about that ending.

Bobby sang something like 92 separate notes in this song. What a voice. He had terrible stage fright. That night his mom was in the audience and he was nervous and he had a bit of a cold. Most couldn't sing half that well on their best day. What a legend. Oh, this one was a cover too, but it's the gold standard. His stage fright was so severe, he sometimes got physically sick before performing, and turned to cocaine. It contributed to his death, unfortunatly. RIP Mr, Hatfield.

There have been many remakes but no one compares to Bobby Hatfields version! Imo. His voice was so angelic....his range was unbelievable! No auto tune & Live! What singer can do that?! lol. The way Bobby did! They both did solo songs throughout their careers. A lot of people thought they were black until they saw them..lol.

I was around when this song made its debut. It quickly became the theme song for every service man away from home during the Viet Nam war. Every Friday and Saturday night, it was dedicated hundreds of times.

Bill Medley was there somewhere because this was a concert and, of course, they had songs together. Bobby Hatfield was the right voice for this song. No auto tune in the 60s. It was effortless for him. Sadly Bobby did die in the early 2000s. But his voice and this recording will live on forever.
