To think Kaito's demo was made during the creation of the Vocaloid VB, which means in 2003-2004, absolutely blows my mind. He sounds amazing and of high quality!

I'm really surprised as to how the very first people who used these vocals software when they were first introduced... managed to do such a stellar job at tuning them. Miku, Rin, Kaito and Gumi, in particular, sounded so smooth and clear, with hardly any buzz/fuzz or random voice breaks like I'd often heard from them all these years. Can anyone help me understand why that is?

They were probably made by people working on the software itself and therefore understood it better than random people trying to use a new program that is difficult to use

Original VOCALOID had somewhat of an advantage that later VOCALOID versions didn't have. I don't know exactly know how to best describe it, but VOCALOID 1 voicebanks are made differently, where instead of the editor manipulating recordings of the voice providers directly like in VOCALOID 2+, voice models were constructed based on the voice providers and then sent to the editor, which opened more possibilities for tone and pronunciation settings, but was never completely utilized and was dropped as soon as VOCALOID 2 was released. Apart from that, the tuning of the demo made good use of the dynamics and vibrato that wasn't too slow or too fast--which I hear a lot of tuners make the mistake of doing so. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure I'm missing more information, it's been years since I last heard about this haha

I am honestly amazed by the tuning in Rin's first song- being able to actually *_hear_* the lyrics an early Vocaloid is singing is about as good as you could get back in the day

Actually, I think the Kaito one might be slightly incorrect. Kimi no Uwasa was Kaito’s first solo demo song, but a bit earlier in 2003, on an album called "HISTORY OF LOGIC SYSTEM", there was a cover of a song called "Ano Subarashii Ai wo Mou Ichido (That Wonderful Love Once More)”. The song used prototype versions of both Kaito and Meiko, making it the first song ever using a Japanese Vocaloid. And yes, that could also be considered Meiko’s first song too.

Did you know that it's Miku's first "official writing" ? It's even written "Hatune" below her 01 tattoo (no it's not a joke, I have the reference of her official V2 drawing in high quality). Here it is: cdn.newswire.com/files/x/54/84/91f931900394b85aa19735b278a2.jpg It's because in the japanese alphabet there is Ta, To, Ti (chi) and Tu (tsu). Ti and Tu are pronounced differently because they're "exceptions", because it's easier to pronounce them "chi" and "tsu" even if they were supposed to be ti and tu at the beginning. But when you write it in another language, you can write "tsu" "tu". So that's why her first official name is Hatune Miku (pronounced Hatsune Miku of course). Hope it helped!

Personally I do like Kaito but I do think it's weird that one of his demo songs made with a prototype voice bank, has better tunning than most other Kaito songs.

It’s not an official demo song, but one of the first songs to use Meiko and Kaito’s prototypes is a song called Ano Subarashii Ai o Mō Ichido released July of 2003, and it’s the first full length song to use Vocaloid voices as far as I know.

sorry if im incorrect or if anyones already commented this, but to my knowledge meiko's first demo song is "the gion", according to a soundcloud upload by the original producer baba roy shuzo, it was created in 2004. theres a reupload of it on youtube by sweet melon! its only 30 seconds long, though.
