That vibration at 1500rpm under light throttle is an issue with the Toyota Auto transmission... We had the exact same issue with our 2022 Prado. It got worse over time and Toyota did a software patch that was meant to fix it but it made the box worse. It shuddered and nudged all the time afterwards. It drove us insane which was precisely why we got rid of it and bought a manual 76. This is what I feared with the introduction of the auto. Keep an eye on it Andrew and please keep the community updated on this behaviour and if it gets worse.

I thought Only in the v8 diesel the 6 speed felt out of place. It seems toyota doesnt puch time into their diesel transmission or simply make a transmission for their petrol engines and put it in diesels.

It sounds like an harmonic vibration issue. This can be a serious problem to fix because it can require significant design changes. Toyota should have done their harmonic tests.

I think the easiest work around for the dash cover and light sensor problem is to do a little modification to the cover by cutting and renewing a little half circle to accommodate the sensor. It might not look as clean but might get the job done 🤷🏻‍♂️. I’m really looking forward to this build series because I can’t afford to replace my thirteen year old Prado 150 so I’m going to have to experience the joy of a new 4X4 vicariously through you! ❤

Great video and good luck Andrew…will be interesting to see how you can make this car at least look good with your arty eye and experience! Ref auto vs manual, I opine that perhaps for the exception of sand driving as you rightly state, manual is overall much better than an auto when it comes to bush driving (difficult river / ditch crossings, rocky and obstacle laden ground). One simply has much more precise control over the movement of the vehicle over / through the obstacles. I have driven an auto more than several times off road through the bush, especially through obstacles following big game, and on hundreds of k’s of bush two-track here in Africa, and it can be absolutely horrible at times. Manual is a bit more “work” and an auto is on the whole “easier”, especially for General use. I agree. “Pays your money you makes your choice” as they say! Good luck!

I think the move to the 2.8L is a good idea. as you said it's shared with the Hilux, Hiace (and even the coaster). so i reckon it's an ubiquitous engine in desolate parts of the world. in your experience in Africa for example; would the 2.8 have more available spare parts than the V8?
@malcolmL995
@malcolmL995 4 ай бұрын
That may take a while until there are enough of these “new” motors around in those areas. Bit like 17” rims, took a long while to be able to procure tyres for that size in isolated areas. The V8 has been around since 2007 which is just short of 20 years.

I have been watching your channel for some time, I was even a Patreon suporter. I do not think you gained much experience with the 2.8 Toyota diesel and Aisin automatic gearbox. Unless they fixed the past problems, which, knowing Toyota, they most likely did not, but did their utmost to conceale them, you are heading for some surprises. I have gained experience with both 4X4 Toyota and Land Rover over the past decades. Even though I can share some of your views about Land Rover I definitely can not do so when it comes to Toyota and the exceptionally poor reliability experience I gained with this manufacturer accompanied by the non existing warranty. At Toyota the warranty expires once you left the show room. Wishing you best of luck.

I think an auto is awesome to drive around town etc. However I still am one of those who have a concern with the auto (even though they are reliable) in the bush, at least a manual you can limp out of the bush and tow start of required etc... @4xoverland
@4xoverland 4 ай бұрын
You damaged the clutch because its not an off roader! Because if it had had low range, you would have used it and not damaged the clutch. Every off roader has low range gearing AND good clearance. So I recommend good clearance AND low range gearing. Auto or manual, doesn't matter.

Cut a whole on the dash cover. A nice round punch tool with metal eyelets will do the trick. For the corner probably fit UHF/VHF antenna on the bullbar to see where your corner is. Radar obstruction can also be addressed with a visor that has been strategically cut to keep it working. Other channels say the large gaps in the fenders make it easier for additional electrical wires coming to/from engine to the cabin. Also I never expected you to get a factory bull bar to begin with so will watch what you decide on. Can't wait to see this car transform.

I had a 2018 2.8 Hilus auto (130kw engine) and there was no turbo lag. It just pulled away without hesitation but ran out of huff at higher rpm. I test drove a 2021 Fortuner with the current 150kw engine and noticed the same turbo lag on takeoff. The engine however pulled very strongly at higher rpm and didn't run out of power. Toyota have not just retuned the engine but also upgraded hardware (bigger turbo which takes longer to spool).

Hi Andrew I always like to hear what you have to say and applysome of it to my 79 series . Regarding the "performance upgrade" you mentioned when you change the raised air intake with a snorkel, have you seen any evidence that it actually works, what about fuel consumption?, seems like the standard air intake is more water proof when driving in heavy rain compared to a ram type inlet and its pretty simple to seal the standard 79 air inlet joins for deep water crossings.
@4xoverland
@4xoverland 4 ай бұрын
The raised intake fitted to my V8 definitely improved performance. How much is hard to say because it was combined with some other things. Water proof the air intake is unnecessary. Rain water is trapped by compartments in one-way valves in the air box. All cars have them.

Congratulations Andrew🎉 The only reason for the larger side indicator repeaters lights is due to the GVM upgrade to 3510kg which changes the classification of the vehicle. Plus with the new 2025 Australian Emissions Laws there would be a strong chance the 70series wouldn't pass, possibly another reason for the V8 being dropped from the range!!

Even if it were a single turbo it would have been nice. I do plan on purchasing a 70 Series very soon, but I'll be going for the oldie, but goody normally aspirated in-line 6, 5 door 7 seater (I have a beautiful wife and 6 babies) or if I can fit some extra seats on a V8 70 series, I'll go with that one instead. @@4xoverlandI absolutely agree the auto, lighter weight and economy will result in a better performing vehicle than the V8 (in most situations) but you’ll never turn the key and grin at it idling, ever. Yourself nor Ronny will disagree with that.

wait until the 4cyl is loaded and has a heavy trailer in tow, winding up a steep curvy track, then you will see and feel the advantage of a V8.

9:20 My 150 Prado does this when the torque converter locks up in cruise mode. Very good for fuel economy but the vibration can annoy some people, I personally like it as I hate slipping automatics, it feels like they are filled with custard as opposed to gears.

Andrew please remember that toyota technical review said the auto will get slightly hotter than manual in extreme of roading . Th big hump is for larger radiator and its vital part

I think I'm getting some Grenadier cold turkey vibes. Such a shame about the exhaust lump. Enjoy the new build, looking forward to the series.

Incredible Review. Thanks you for going into the pros and cons of automatic vs manual on different terrain. Learned a ton. It breaks my heart that we cannot get those in North America. Spot On about the engineers, by the way. THANK YOU, also for mentioning the blind spot and quality. I am so frustrated with Toyota's insistence on staying with the unnecessarily large front 'nose' on their Pickup trucks and suv's here in N America. It's to the point of absurd, and don't understand why reviewers are not talking about it more. My hopes have been raised however with the new landrover, and I look forward to a test drive.

Depends. What kind of travelling do you do? What size is the family? Those are just two of 20 questions before I'd suggest anything.

I also have a vibration at a certain RPM on very hot days and it actually comes from the snorkel. May not be the same vibration as you have but something to check. Test is to stick your hand out the window and press the snorkel against the body and it should go away.

Seen similar on teambullet offroads new cruiser, where the bottom section connects to the upper on the snorkel. I had a vibration from the window wiper motor or whatever it is. wasn’t properly in. Made the whole cab LOUD.

I assume the engine bay might have an ample space to be used for accessories, just take advantage of the rise in the bonnet and install a bridge-like bracket for accessories.
