We've made it around the southern tip of Taiwan and are heading up the East Coast, starting in Taitung! We're spending the day exploring Taitung City, starting at Beinan Cultural Park, then Railway Art Village and a few parks. We also are curious about Taiwan's garbage system...

Loving the videos! As for the garbage trucks, they used to pick up from curb side but the government changed the policy in 1996. You can imagine with the density of households and the way streets are setup, how things used to be with lots of trash put out on the streets in the hot Taiwan weather. The current policy keeps things cleaner and also encourages people to recycle.

Thanks! Question about the garbage - do people know when the trucks are coming by (like is there a schedule)? Or do you always keep a bag ready to be brought out in case you hear the music?

Taitung (Taidong) is definitely one of my favorite places in Taiwan. Loved the Prehistoric Culture Museum. Love the ocean and the laid back town. That giant park next to the Haibin park is also amazing. The islands off-shore are even more amazing. There are mountains, hot-spring, indigenous cultures, just all around the best part of Taiwan.

It is great to start visiting Taitung from the Aboriginal Museum. The relics seem to reveal that TW with a diversity of Austronesian groups and languages is the dispersing center of Austronesian people (Prof. Robert Blust from Hawaii University). It is very pleasing and amazing to visit the becah part in Taitung by walking from the city. Your vedioes never disappoint me. Thanks a lot!!

Some travellers may skip the east coast due to the limit of time and energy and leave it for the next trip. You are planning to go around the island in this trip. That is amazing. Next time, when you drop by, which places would you choose? The Central Mountains?🙂

Thanks a lot for another fantastic + wonderful free ride! I guess I am a sort of able to say, been there done that, to these beautiful places. As for the garbage truck, expect the unexpected while traveling, would probably be the best part from any tour.

I would say the proper way to visit Taitung was riding on a scooter along the coastal roads, feeling the sunshine and the view of the Pacific Ocean. (though, I know, getting a vehicle here could be a hassle for foreign visitors) Water sports like surfing and indigenous culture are other charms of Taitung, too. But if you're too lazy to do expeditions, maybe, sitting at the beach, holding your beer and doing nothing can be the best way to enjoy the place. It's not much like the experience in the fancy villas in Bali, or at the Tahiti beach to feel the tropical and exotic vibe. Doing nothing in Taitung is just for lying back, realising that you actually have such a luxury of doing nothing. Of course, you may do it in every corner of the world, but I just feel the rural village of Taitung would be a decent place of doing the activity of doing nothing :)

Taiwan is a tropic island country, population has 23 million. The area is small, the population is large, the weather is super super hot, If people throw the garbage in the truck on the street. it will smelly and bacterial growth. It is unthinkable to put rubbish on the street. So this is the best way.

About the garbage collection system in Taiwan, it is not allowed to leave the garbage on the ground unattended. Therefore there is a scheduled time of the day depending on where you live that the truck stops by to collect your trash. If you miss it, you have to bring your trash home and wait for the next day.

thanks for come visit Taiwan. Have a nice trip. early urban construction in small towns & Only used a landfill to take care of the daily trash. Keep trash off the ground program to keep cityscape Good. but after 70 years ~~ Taiwan is just a little big island. Both incinerator and landfill are NIMBY(Not In My Back Yard) facilities. Taitung starts the incinerator on 07/2023. before that, the trash must deliver to the Kaoshung incinerator. waste fuel & more carbon dioxide. Nantou is stuck with the same issue NIMBY.

I’m a Taiwanese living in USA long. I know here the garbage gets collected once a week. Taiwan must offer opportunities for people to dispose of it possibly daily. It is because Taiwan is subtropical. Garbage smells fast. Also, rats, flies, and roaches feast on it.

Ah! The garbage trucks! 😂 Yup, taking out the garbage more than once a week can be quite annoying, but considering most Taiwanese households only have very limited space for garbage bins and hot and humid weather makes the garbage impossible to stay smellless. The best solution is to dispose of them frequently.
@lexsongtw
@lexsongtw 11 ай бұрын
When I was young, I remember there being stationary garbage collection points around alley corners, similar to what's found in Japan or maybe the USA. However, these "collection points" often just became random garbage piles here and there. Smell and sanitary issues became serious, and I think there were several "garbage crises," so the policy was changed to "The garbage never touches the ground." Now, garbage trucks only collect garbage directly from individuals, and there are serious fines to prevent random littering on the street. The goal is to avoid garbage piling up on the street.
