Excellent speech. The first lady has done her homework. Her speech has empathy, understanding, and experience of the struggle that blacks (including herself) have had to endure. It is the combination of experience, empathy and understanding that enables Mrs. Obama to critically speak on the issues with respect to her specific audience. That is why it is important to know the true history of your country and not rely on the censored version found in many history books or portrayed throughout the media (radio, television, movies, etc).

+Lucinda Burgess What specific audience? If you take out her references to white people or "they". This speech could apply to all struggling college students. I am glad she has admitted that that college is not perfect as there is and has been issues of intolerance to the minorities according to some students at that University. As no school seems to be immune to the minority few who practice bigotry.

Lady Obama keeping it 100. She is speaking from a historical perspective." History is a clock that people use to tell their cultural and political time of day. It is also a compass they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. History tells a people who they are, what they are. Most important history tell a people what they have been, where they have been, where they must go, what they still must be. The relationship of history to a people is the same as the relationship of a mother to a child." J.H.K As far as cards of any kind is concerned ,she has 4 Aces. Nothing she has said during this speech should be defended. It is what it is. Those who combat it only do so because it exposes their bigotry. Ignorance does not deserve anything more than the art of being ignored. I hope and pray that we will learn how to accept our futures are brighter than they ever were, no matter the ignorance that surrounds up. We rise no matter what anyone believes or says. #Khalas

Bill Watley, I sort of hear where you are coming from. However, being a black person she is first one of this stature, it was a must of her speak to black individuals because NO ONE else will EVER do it. It most likely will ever happen again. Despite how many black people wanted CLINTON or Sanders to president, you and I know they would never go to a HBCU and speak to them in this tone. She also spoke of this to let know that she knows how things are despite her position in this country and world. This was the prime time.

Anton Wilkins I know, this speech was great!! I'm glad the first lady is as accomplished as she is and I feel for her strife. On one notion though about how people crossed the street in fear of their safety and department store clerks and questioned intelligence, I would have to say that those happenings are not only particular to blacks, I've experienced people doing the same thing to me. All of them. People are judgmental and everyone deals with each others judgement. We live in a truly free society today and there is no rampant racism, only rampant judgement.

tyler petee No there is rampant racism. Just because judgement happens to us all and we all share similar experiences it is more like that these things will happen more often to someone who looks like me than those that look like you. This isn't to say that it WON'T happen to you and it is not prudent to assume it happens equally just because you and a FEW people like you have experienced it. We have to acknowledge the problem fully in order to really move past it. Drag it out of the shadows and expose it to everyone.

Dude...it's not racism it's tribalism. lol You think your special? You think you're treated unfairly? What about people without highschool diplomas who don't get hired, what do you call that? A diploma's just a piece of paper, it doesn't represent all that you know or all that you can do, yet businesses still look for that diploma right? How about I try walking through raqqa in that new Islamic caliphate. I bet people will look at me funny if I take a stroll through somalian streets. As a matter of fact prejudice is so frequent that it's pointless trying to completely eradicate it because by nature, we are a communal species and we stick to our own communities. COMMUNITIES. want to stop being picked on? Stop forming black communities, websites, groups etc... world star hip hop, ebony magazine...Stop promoting HBCUs because all that does is segregate yourself from the larger picture of America as a whole...The UNITED. You're inherently racist for believing that your skin color is what separates you from others in our society, stop believing in that bullshit and shake off the haters like a normal person and get with us.

Remarkable speech. At first I was a little taken back by the racial emphasis. But then I thought about where she was giving the speech (a predominant black college) and what Mrs. Obama and her husband have endured while in office. The reality is that racism is well and alive. I think the message for the graduates is to find themselves and not give up on their dreams. Mrs. Obama is a phenomenal speaker and its unfortunate that racism is still a major problem in this country today.

I really appreciated hearing First Lady, Michelle Obama's, speech unedited! Having watched portions of the speech by several media talk show hosts, I had to come to my own conclusions about what Mrs. Obama had to say. I'm grateful to her for her honesty and faith-based approach to discussing the difficulties of race relations, as they have developed, in the United States. Mrs. Obama has a great amount courage in speaking this truth about the journey of African Americans through their triumphs and tribulations, but I believe she ultimately, and wisely, gave these graduates the best advice they could receive for life. Stay true to your mind and heart, serve others through mentoring, and block out the 'NOISE" of those who position themselves to be roadblocks to people of color in our future. Bravo, Michelle Obama! Thank you for inspiring another generation of future leaders, especially those of us "who look like you and I." Thanks to C-SPAN for this unedited version of Michelle Obama's speech at Tuskegee University, May 2015.

Yes, the first lady is correct. We should have been just as diligent in voting in 2010, and 2014 as were during the presidential elections because the house and senate was lost to republicans during the mid-term elections and as a result those tea party people voted against President Obama and made him a lame duck president; and we complained about what he wasn't doing, as if we didn't know when we didn't get out the vote in those other elections we did not help the President . We didn't give a lot of money to his campaigns, so the least we could have done was voted, so that he could maintain the power he needed to help us.

It's amazing how hateful and ignorant people are when a black person shares a story that even hints of overcoming any struggle. Are only certain people allowed to have a voice? Does it intimidate you to know that we are intelligent? Do you boil over with anger when we do not perpetuate stereotypes of uneducated or violent people? Does it offend you to know that we are rising above discrimination? Does it infuriate you that we still have our institutions of higher learning? Do you sulk when you see we are progressing in spite of any negative circumstances? If any of this offends you or makes you defensive, then you need work on your own personal issues. God bless our FLOTUS!

Nikki Foster, I never raped or murdered anyone, I wasn't even alive at the time but if you want to blame me for something that happened 100's of years before I was even born, then by your very own philosophy I have the right to hold YOU and every other black person alive today responsible for all the times I was jumped, and had tools stolen out of my truck. After all I wasn't alive during the days of slavery, YOU were alive when I was jumped by cowards. So the fact of the matter is YOU are far more responsible for what happened to me than I am for what NEVER happened to you. And here is something else for you to suck on, how do you think blacks were able to gain their freedom and their civil rights? Many brave men tried, they fought the good fight but unfortunately lost. It wasn't until the majority of whites said "Enough is Enough" and joined the fight. If it were not for these brave and noble men and women many things may have never changed. Nikki you are not a social justice warrior, you are not a civil rights activist, you are a spoiled, ungrateful little brat who needs a lesson in history an in class. BTW, You're Welcome.

I am sorry that you have encountered these experiences, but you CANNOT make these generalizations about ALL black people behaving the same way those people did. I am not justifying what happened to you personally, but you have to understand that not everyone from a single race are motivated to do the same things as others might be motivated to do. In addition, you sure as hell cannot hold all black people accountable for things they did not even part take in. Michelle Obama is clearly not stirring up a crowd of malicious African American individuals, she is simply trying to motivate the minority group she personally relates to because she knows how hard the struggle many of them will have to face will be just to be seen as something other ignorant individuals, like you, made them out to be. This is why one should not make any generalizations like that because it is absurd to make abstract identities for a certain group of people simply due to the color of their skin.

Cory O'Neal I don't think I missed her message. It's just like when black people tell us that we could never know what it feels like when someone of another ethnic group uses the "n" word on them. Well, it's the same with us when someone says to a crowd "...that the road ahead is not going to be easy, it never is, especially for folks like you and me." (Hmmm, I wonder what she meant by that?) "There will be times, just like those airmen, where you feel like folks (What folks? White folks?) look right passed you." Talking about lumping people together and saying they all think alike and you better get used to it. If you have this attitude, you will always be looking over your shoulder for any subtle or trivial remark that may offend you and then out comes your deck of handy dandy race cards. That's what we are sick of. Now do you get it?

A couple thoughts about this speech. 1. White people go through just as much of a struggle graduating from college if there families cant provide the money for it just like aftrican americans. 2. It doesn't matter what color your skin is as a recent college graduate i can tell you that without any experience or knowing someone you will get looked right past. 3. Her use of the words "some people" were unnecessary and not much better than saying you people. 4. There are colleges all over this country that are historically african american where white people do not attend. How do you think african amercans would react if there was a white college where african americans did not attend. -just some thoughts i had

1. She didn't say they didn't. 2. She didn't say that wasn't true. 3. So should she have said 'homosapiens' instead of people? 4. People of all races are able to attend. They do not discriminate based on race.

John Bell Look.. her entire speech implied that it is much harder for african amercans to graduate from college and find a job.. that is simply not true. As for the some people.. no she doesn't have to use homosapians.. it was her underlying tone of how she used the phrase. You can basically here her saying you damn white people. Its not hard to pick up on all you have to do is listen.

locstar77 yes, so what if she is implying that 'you damn white people' have it better than someone of African-American descent? It is the truth, after all. Now as a reply to your thoughts about this speech: 1) Yes white people go through struggles as well, financial issues, family problems, etc. but they don't have to worry about racism on top of that and how many opportunities are lost because of 'some people's' discriminatory attitudes towards their race. 2) Well, let me tell you that as a recent college graduate you don't know anything and also to take a look at statistics. The statistics speaks for itself. 3) You're white, stop being so butt hurt. Just look around and all the privileges that comes with the mere fact that, you have a lighter skin tone. 4) Like John Bell said ' People of all races are able to attend. They do not discriminate based on race.' Now go read a history book and re-evaluate your thoughts about this speech. I assure you it'll prevent you from sounding like an absolute dickhead next time.

Ash Sherlock Oh god your hilarious. I'm guessing you must be black. White people do have to worry about racism dip shit. There are plenty of black people that hate white people. And when i say recent i mean i have been in my professional career for a little over 3 years now. My father was well known in the business world in the area i live in but i wanted to try to get a job on my own. Well after over 100 applications and only 3 interviews with no results I caved and he helped me land 2 internships and then finally the job i am in today. So, I do know a little something there ass sneeze it is not easy for anyone white or black. Also, me being white.. doesn't entitle me to anything that some one that's black can't obtain. Why don't you pull your fuckin head out of your ass and stop living in the past. Shit happened back then that wasn't right i know but guess what its not back then its now. By law everyone has the same rights and if you feel like they have been violated because of your skin color you can do something about it. stop playing the race card and fucking get over it. No one owes you shit. Stop whining and complaining and get off your ass and earn a living. If more african amercians and white trash alike would this country would be in much better shape. Good try though you almost had a point. Oh wait.. no you didnt.

I think the reason so called 'white people' may be a bit confused by her comments is because the racism experience is a largely deeply kept secret at a personal level. Only TV personalities and activists talk about it much. My wife is from Australia and she is what would be considered in America 'white'. My neighbors speak to her and even eat her cooking. She is a stay at home mum. The same neighbors don't speak to me... I am an American with all the trimmings including decorated military service and college graduate. It doesn't matter much to them, I guess I am not 'white' enough. My wife doesn't know it and I have never discussed it with her. There is shame in it, but I am not quite sure where the shame should be placed. If I was graduating from college and looking forward to starting a life (work, housing, etc), her comments would save me a lot of grief and confusion; and make me understand the waters I'll be navigating a bit better. If my neighbors were cops with guns, in a hiring position or real estate agents, I would have some real concerns.

In 2013 young people though it would be fun to "play the knockout game." To my knowledge this was not limited to a particular race but was engaged by thugs who were black and white. There were many totally innocent people seriously injured and several deaths resulting. Do I cross the street when I see a Black" teen in a hoody approaching? Take the descriptor "Black" out of the question and the answer is it depends if I am packing or with someone who is packing. What is most telling is that Michelle previously told the story of how she was asked by a fellow shopper if she would get a shirt for them. When should told the story that time, she said when she told the person she did not work for the store, the patron replied "I didn't think you do but you are so tall that I though I thought you could reach the shirt." She then went on to say how tickled she was to be treated as a useful everyday person. That is a far cry from her victimhood version in this speech. I wonder how many of today's Black youth are aware that way less than 1% of Whites owned slaves in the pre-Civil War South, Whereas nearly 25% of Free Blacks owned Slaves during the same period. And the Republican Party was founded in Ripon Wisconsin for the express purpose to end slavery and nominated as its first candidate for President a Lawyer from Illinois (of all places) named Abe Lincoln. It was Southern Democrats who fought voting Rights, and wanted Jim Crowe Laws. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who Desegregated the Military and passed the first Civil Rights Act. Democrats have tried to rewrite their own history by literally buying the votes of Blacks (and everyone else) with largely unfunded goodies (I'm gonna get me an Obamaphone). Now Republicans have for decades joined in the pork barreling and together Republicans and Democrats have racked up OVER $167 TRILLION (WITH A "T") in UNFUNDED LIABILITIES (WASHINGTON SPEAK FOR WE HAVE NO PLAN TO ACTUALLY DELIVER ON THE UNDERLYING PROMISES). I AGREE WITH ONE THING SHE SAID, "Vote, Vote, Vote," but I SAY ANYBODY BUT DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS.

+John Bell. I believe she and her husband are exaggerating race issues (like the fact that people avoid young Blacks for the same reason they avoid young Whites - The Knockout Game -) but she tries to make crossing the street about race. Her claim about that, like her changing story about being mistaken for "The help." In this speech she makes it about race. Its a LIE. She is caught in both these lies and lying invalidates any message, don't you agree?

This is ridiculous! I understand, a lot of things have happened to the black community in America through out history, but this was not the time to bring it up. She should be talking about their achievements, what they're going to do in life! She shouldn't be warning them to look out for the white folks trying to drag them down. This makes me think of a girl I knew who had an opportunity to give encouragement and advice to some students on the day of gradation, and instead she dragged on and on about how her mom left her and how terrible her life was, even though everyone in the room had been told by her several times in the past years. She was so hung up on this wrong doing she couldn't put it aside to encourage the students. There's a time and a place to talk about stuff like this and graduation day is not it. Its a time to look towards are future and not be worried about our past.
