Let me know what you think! Do you use First Language Lessons? Does it work well in your homeschool?

Can you jump in at any level with this curriculum? I’m trying to figure out where to start with my reluctant writer.

Yes, I think there is a lot of built in review and you could easily jump in to any level!

Thank you for this in depth look! You mentioned you were using this as a supplement to another curriculum. What curriculum are you primarily using?

We use the Language Arts from Abeka for Pre-K through 3rd grade! We don't do everything that the curriculum suggests, but learn phonics and basic reading, writing, and grammar rules.

In the video you mentioned this supplements another curriculum and here you mentioned using this alongside Abeka. What do you use after 3rd grade? Also are there CDs that go along with FLL? I thought I saw that online somewhere.

Thank you for this review! Can Level 1-2 be done in a yr? My question is because we are using a different curriculum, right now, and it’s not going great with it.. My daughter is 6 and would have been going to 1st grade. The curriculum that we are using placed us on level K and my daughter is completely unmotivated..she knows everything that it’s been covered. So I can’t afford to buy a whole new curriculum at this point. I’ve learned about this curriculum through another video, and since been searching reviews on it. I am worried to start her again next year on a lower level but I don’t know if being on this level K will make her fall behind.. That’s why I want to know if both levels can be done in a “year”. I don’t mind if we roll into summer with it, or if starting at level 2 will be just fine. I don’t want her to miss important concepts because I am definitely clueless when it comes to grammar! Thank you 💗

Yes, I think you could definitely squeeze 2 levels into one year if that was your goal. Each book is only 100 lessons and several of the Level 1 lessons are pretty simple. You could easily double up some of the easier lessons to get through 2 books if you wanted!

@@milaalvarez3145 yes, other parents are doing lvl 1 & 2 during first grade. The authors recommend not to stop during the summer as the kids will regress in grammar. Hit it up at least 1x per week in the summer. So doing both levels back to back is actually advantageous

My son will be in first grade at the end of this year and I was thinking about using level 1- we haven’t used this curriculum for language arts before this- what does “review” refer to in lesson 1?
@livingthegandeelife5565
@livingthegandeelife5565 2 жыл бұрын
There is no review in lesson 1 - it is just introducing the definition of a common noun. Any subsequent "review" sections that are included in Level 1 refer to prior lesson material review.

Thank you so much for this review! I’m currently using their Writing With Ease and we’ve been enjoying it. I don’t know id you have any experience with that curriculum but would you say it’s too much to use that along with FLL? Also, is the student workbook just a bunch of lined pages for them to write on? Or do they have additional questions?
@livingthegandeelife5565
@livingthegandeelife5565 3 жыл бұрын
I am glad you found the video helpful! I do not have any experience with Writing With Ease, but I can say that the first 2 levels of the FLL do not have accompanying kids workbooks. There is a kid workbook for the FLL Level 3 and it is not just a book with lined pages. It has the different activities that are discussed in the Teacher book - diagramming, sentences, etc. To my knowledge anything that is discussed in the Teacher Book is included in the child workbook. Because of this we just use a plain notebook and do our activities in a notebook without paying for the workbook. Hopefully you find that helpful!

@@livingthegandeelife5565 Hi! I was wondering how far you have gone in the Level 3? Were you able to continue using it as Instructor text+notebook or did you find you needed to buy the workbook later on? Thank you SO much for this video. It has solidified my decision to buy the curriculum, but I prefer the fewest amount of moving parts as possible :)

Hi, whats the reasoning behind making the kids do the poetry memorization? Just curious.
@livingthegandeelife5565
@livingthegandeelife5565 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's a good question. My understanding has always been to introduce children to the beauty and rhythm of correct language. For example, if we speak poorly children tend to imitate the poor language (as children are natural imitators). Likewise, if we speak with good and beautiful language, the hope is that they would imitate that as well. They also are hearing proper cadence and naturally start to imitate it. While that is just my take on it, I hope you find that helpful!
@user-vg8ez9cu6u
@user-vg8ez9cu6u 3 жыл бұрын
@@livingthegandeelife5565 yes, that was helpful. I guess I'm just wondering about the memorization aspect. Why not just include poetry reading daily or weekly? Wouldnt that achieve the same thing? Why do they have to memorize it?

@@user-vg8ez9cu6uHi, I know this is an old comment, but I just found this video. In the book The Well-Trained Mind they actually explain that memorizing and reciting poetry early on helps kids become comfortable with public speaking. I found that really interesting because even though I personally enjoy memorizing, I never really saw the purpose behind it before I read this 😊

what is the difference between this and 'grammar for the well trained mind" are they the same?
@livingthegandeelife5565
@livingthegandeelife5565 3 жыл бұрын
So I have not personally used Grammar for the Well Trained Mind, but my understanding was that it was a grammar program for 5th grade and above while we have used First Language Lessons for grades 1-3.
