Billy Idol . . . the man, the image, the sneer. Idol was part of the UK punk scene from the start. He was one of the original rabid fans who'd turn up at every Sex Pistols gig, and became friends with Pistols' guitarist Steve Jones. Inspired by the Pistols' uncompromising attitude, he started a band called Generation X, and gave himself a sarcastic name because stardom was the last thing on his mind. The first time the world saw Idol was in footage of The Sex Pistols' notorious appearance on the Bill Grundy Show. He, Siouxsie Sioux and several other scenesters were hanging out with the band when they got the emergency call to fill in on the show when Queen cancelled. Grundy was drunk, the Pistols were foul-mouthed, Siouxsie had to fend off Grundy's advances, and both sides hated each other completely. Scandal erupted: the next day the newspaper headlines labeled the whole incident "The Filth And The Fury". The BBC fired Grundy soon after, and the Pistols went on to make a landmark album.

Wasn't Bill Grundy on Thames TV (ITV)? Steve Allen (LBC radio) told a story years ago. He, along with Dale Winston, used to work for an in house radio station (United Biscuits Network), and they went to interview the Sex Pistols a few days before the Bill Grundy show. Dale interviewing, Steve as sound man. Dale's comment on leaving ,"I don't think we can use any of that".

Ah, you can't beat a bit of Billy Idol for upbeat 80's nostalgia ;-) His partnership with Steve Stevens marks arguably the high points and most successful phases of his career - simply a perfect combination. High energy melodic rock, I'm not sure Billy's voice ever got as much recognition as he was due - he could croon with the best of them, yet open up and distort into growls and tuneful screams when the song called for it. I saw him live about 14 years ago now (where does the time go?!) and he still had it :-) Just great, tuneful 80's rock - anything from his time working with Steve Stevens is worth a listen. 'Eyes without a face' is a good one for a slower, softer, track, or 'Sweet 16' - 'To be a lover' and 'White Wedding' both have a similar energy to Rebel Yell though if you'd like to try another one like that :-) So much fun music still out there to experience!

Daniel check out Generation X as Billy ( stage name) founded this band in the UK and they released 3 albums..I think. lol Billy was the lead vocalist in the band. Think Gen X disbanded 80 or 81 and Billy headed to the USA. So he had his roots in the Punk explosion in the UK during the mid-late 70s.

GREAT tune...I didn't unsubscribe LOL!! Billy got his stage mane because a lot of his teachers in school would comment on his report card that he was a bright student but very idle...he changed it to idol. His guitarist Steve Stevens is one of the best, very original and damn good. Just sucks they had to overdub the studio version with additives onto a concert video. White Wedding, Dancing With Myself and Hot In The City are also worthy. Hot In The City is a staple for his live shows because he can insert the name of any given city he is playing in during the song at a specific point. If you want to do a comparison reaction he covers the Doors' LA Woman. Unfortunately I have never seen Billy in concert, maybe some time here in Vegas if I ever get the chance. Great reaction!

Daniel, you're killing me. This song brings back many many fond memories of the swinging 1980s. My girlfriend and I used to go dancing every Friday night at the classy Marriott nightclub (jacket, shirt and tie was required for guys, ladies too had to dress appropriately). The Marriott nightclub was a place for us Yuppies to dance the night away till 3am and this song was hit favorite among all of us there. I guess you can say we were a bit rebel then.
