I take it as a mirror image Neil sees himself as the old man and the old man as him Young. I've heard that Neil kept the old man on his ranch as the caretaker till his death. Which to me speaks a lot of Neil's character✌️♥️

So many great songs by Neil. Southern Man, Like a Hurricane, Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, Don't Let It Bring You Down, A Man Needs A Maid/Heart of Gold live, Hey Hey My My, Rocking In the Free World and I haven't even scratched the surface.

Live version. Neil would never lip sync. The music feels real because it is real. He sings about his life and his emotions, his thoughts. Neil is a truthspeaker. The old man, the caretaker, just sort of came along with the property when Neil bought it. So he entered Neils life that way, and stayed.

II feel confident that when he wrote "Doesn't mean that much to me , To mean that much to you", that he wasn't saying something negative to his audience, but rather saying that he was committing to not chasing or being swayed by fame. He was saying that he was going to stay grounded in himself and his music. We certainly can now celebrate that he has lived his life this way and we can all benefit from his body of work.

Definitely my fave Neil Young song. For years (long before the internet) I thought he was singing about his father. Seemed the obvious conclusion at the time. Having lost my dad when I was 17, it was during my 20s I heard this song and it made me cry like a baby, reflecting on my father's life and finding my way in the 1980s. Here I am in my 60s and I still get choked when Neil belts out the chorus. OLD MAN FUN FACT: When Young released the track, fellow Canadian songwriter Joni Mitchell heard the song and was so moved, she wrote a song in response on her Ladies of the Canyon album. The Circle Game spins a tale of a young man going through the seasons of life, and while poignant it's reflective and a bit more optimistic, and great sing along.

"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you..." So many people are people pleasers and care more about what others think about themselves instead of what they think about their own self. RIght.

I was 20 years old when this came out. I enjoyed the song but it means more to me now that I am 68. I have a completely different perspective, much as my perspective of Pink Floyd's Time has changed. Not many of today's "artists" could walk out on stage with a guitar, and have the audience in the palm of his hand. When I was young I was very shy and self-conscious. I don't remember who said it, but I read a quote the went something like. "If you knew how seldom people think about you, you wouldn't be so concerned about what they think." Keeping that in mind helped me a lot.

Always forget how young he was always an old soul. Look for his album Harvest we all had it.Thought you would like him.

Great reaction! Back in 1978 when I was in graduate school, I came home for lunch and in my mailbox was a cassette tape made by my friends back home. They knew that I loved Neil Young. Still do. The first song that they played for me was "Old Man." It happened to be my 24th birthday. It brought me to tears. Next was "Heart of Gold" followed by ""Southern Man" and ended with a very long version of "Down By the River" with a never ending ending. At the end of which, they all yelled "Happy Birthday" to me and then needled me by yelling "Neil Young sucks!!! We did these songs for you, buddy!" Now, I'm the "Old Man" watching you react to one of my favorite songs. These same friends of mine wanted to play Neil Young's song "Hey Hey My MY" at my wedding 40 years ago (I'm still happily married). They wanted to play it as I was to walk down the aisle. [You should react to that song.] It's wild and raw. I think that's why they wanted to blast it at full volume in the church. The Priest nixed it, saying it was secular.music and not in the hymnal. With a lyric like "It's better to burn out than it is to rust" with full distortion at full volume (it was grunge before there was a thing called "Grunge"), they all thought it was the perfect song to send me off to wedded life. Neil Young is one of the all time greats. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield, to CSN&Y, through his long, successful solo career, his spark has ignited so many songs over so many years. He IS the godfather of grunge, being one of the earliest musicians to use guitar distortion to the max. He's done ear bleeding, rip- your-face-off rock and he's done sweet acoustic ballads. In the 2000s he struck a friendship up with Pearl Jam and they did some stage appearances together. In one performance in Canada, Pearl Jam began Neil's song "Rockin' in the Free World" and built the intensity up to ten, with the crowd rocking. Then Neil walked onstage, the place exploded and the intensity shot up to about fifteen and stayed there for the rest of the song. LEGEND!

This was from 1971 so Neil is about 26 years old in this. It's a full set on a BBC program so he's talking to a British audience which is why he says, "I don't know if you have things like that here." at the first of the clip. As for date, this is early 70s - probably 72-ish. Neil is in his 70s now and still going strong. He's released something like 40 albums over his lifetime and he headlines Farm Aid, one of the causes he is passionate about. In addition, he is probably the greatest songwriter of the rock era. His lyrics are amazing and his voice is so clear and perfect, you don't have to pull up the lyric sheets to understand every single word. Neil's electric guitar work is also amazing and most of it is done with one guitar he has owned since the 60s - Old Black, which is so uniquely modified, it has its own Wikipedia entry.

I just want to say , David that you always had the ear , had the sensitivity to dial in some great songs . Don't know where you are now , but I hope you are happy . Some of us loved your takes on the music of our era . I'm 76 yrd old, and very much appreciated your contribution to music .

"The Needle and the Damage" "After the Gold Rush"

This was written in 1971 released 1972. In the film Heart of Gold, Young introduces the song as follows: About that time when I wrote ("Heart of Gold"), and I was touring, I had also-just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time-I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darnedest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.

You can see the whole half hour concert of this 1970 BBC TV 'In Concert' show. It's all brilliant. I always thought that the lines ' Live alone in a paradise, That makes me think of two... have two faces to it's meaning. The paradise is his new ranch, which would have more meaning to him if he had someone, a partner, to share it with. And secondly, and this may just be me, the paradise is Eden, and of course home to that famous couple who were expelled. Every relationship has its fall, maybe?

I just read through the comments and nobody mentioned "Long May You Run." Back a few years when the Winter Olympics were in Canada, he was asked to open the show. My wife said that he'd sing his big hit "Heart of Gold." I turned to her and said, "If he was an American, that's what he'd sing. But he's Canadian, I think he's going to sing "Long May You Run" for all the athletes to have a long wonderful life. And I was right!!!

Harvest was one of the great albums from the early seventies. My favorite NY song is Sugar Mountain. The Ranch Foreman comes with the ranch...included in the deal...the buyer is responsible for his well being. Quite common 50+ years ago in the west. ps, Pocahontas is one of his classics...the marlon brando reference cracks me up every time.

Love this song. It reminds me of sitting on the sunny patio with my brother Bill. He played guitar and we sang harmonies for hours. He was 15 and I was 18. This song takes me right back there. We lost Bill about three years ago. Tresured memories.

Awesome performance. Love his emotion, his guitar playing. I'm 50 now and this song makes me think of my younger self, and also makes me think of my 22 year old son talking/singing to me now. It's very moving to me.

This was a tv show in England Broadcast on the BBC. I think this was in 1970 or 71. Wow! Neil Young looks so young in this video. What a great clip. It shows you that you don't always have to have a big sound system, with huge amps, and loud electric guitars, to have a performance like this one, really make an impression on you. One man, and his acoustic guitar can bring a tear to you eyes.

I think you'll enjoy his electric side too, with tunes like "Cortez the Killer" and "Rocking in the Free World".

Neil Young is Canadian born and is playing live here in the UK. Of course, he was part of the bank Crosby, Still, Nash and Young. He left the band to go on his own.....if you want lyrics and an even better song, try The Needle and the Damage Done.

One of my all-time favorite songs. I found it amazing that someone so young as Neil Young was at the time, could be so in-tune to older people and the circle of life, so to speak. He is amazing.

Neil celebrated his 75th birthday yesterday. This is as live as it can get. The studio version (from the legendary "Harvest" album) featured gorgeous but subtle backing vocals from James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt.

The line, “live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two,” is an allusion to the garden of Eden.

His shows are like that, he does talk to the audience, I have seen him a lot of times. This is a long time ago, Neil is 74 now. Great song though and he is a wonderful guitar player, it is a timeless classic and I think it would still chart today. This song came out in 1972. Neil often did small clubs or bars under alternate names. I used to see him at a small place in a canyon in Southern Ca. If he was going to be in town I would make a trip out to the bar to see if Neil was going to be showing up. If you were a regular or insider, you could get the info. When you are older there is less and less time, but not less and less to be done, it is a strange thing.

I remember listening to this when I was oh so young and can understand how Neil feels it is incongruous to play it now. This time listening to it it made me think of the Eagles line, 'she never thought she''d be alone. This far down the line...'

Harvest album is one of the best albums ever made. Love his accoustic stuff. Listen to " Four Strong Winds by him ". A song not heard often yet is one great song. There have been very few performers as versatile and passionate as Neil, and he has reinvented himself endlessly over the years. Take your time to go down that rabbit hole; his song "Powderfinger" would give you plenty of musical and narrative fodder, especially the liver version from 1979.

See the version of this song on the Tonight Show where Jimmy Fallon comes out doing his Neil Young impersonation, (which is very good), and Neil, dressed identically, comes out and sings it with him. P.S. Sorry - they seem to have taken the complete performance down from Y.Tube. There is a similar one with Young, which I left a link to, but it went to spam.

The dude is an absolute LEGEND. You should definitely check out his studio version though. His vocals & work on the acoustic guitar are just as clean & polished as during this live performance. But you also get the addition of a little slide guitar & James Taylor plucking on the banjo. I finally got to see him about 15 years ago, in Reno, NV.

Neil is all about the sound. Vinyl has made a comeback because of him. He has handicapped children and invents things, like train stuff, for them. He is a part of Lionel Trains. You have to read "Waging Heavy Peace" , a Neil autobiography that is a great book. You'll love him even more after reading it. I saw him with Crazy Horse in 1970 at a little club in D.C. A few years ago he put out an album of that gig, Live at The Cellar Door". After the show we invited him to our table and we drank wine and talked. It was awesome.

Yes do "Heart of Gold". The live version from the same concert. "Old Man" is one of my favorites by Neil Young. He's got a great voice and in the live versions you can see he puts his heart and soul into the music. I think you should be able to play his songs on your guitar. You're getting pretty good at it. Young was about 27 when this song was released. I don't have a date for this performance. There's another performance where he plays the guitar AND a harmonica at the same time, which is worth looking for.

This generation has the ability to interact with the older generation, YT gives you a way to do it, since you don't know who is on the comment section. My generation had only two ways to know anything about these bands Radio and the Record stores. We didn't have older people guiding our browsing history, showing us Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, except family members (see the opening to the movie "Tenacious D" with Meat Loaf as his dad) LOL !! This arrived in the 70s. Neil Young was a person that as we learned the guitar, our go to. We could figure out the chords and lyrics at a decent speed.

Neil has one of the deepest catalogues ever, and he's amazing! Love this song. I have most of his Cds; I agree with every suggestion. Neil Young could just switch the lyrics a bit now in his old age “ Young man, look at yourself, i’m a lot like you” and sing it from the point of view of the old ranch man. It could still work.

Neil absolutely knew this "old man" very well. His name was Louis Avila and he was a caretaker at Neil's Broken Arrow Ranch in northern California, where Neil still lives.

Neil Young, the conscience of a generation. He was all about the music. He played with several bands. They would start to do things for commercial success and Neil would be like, it's about the music, I'm out. This was about the ranch hand on his place. The old man lived the rest of his life out on Neil's place.

Neil Young Live at Massey Hall 1971 and Young Shakespeare are two great live albums from this era.

This one was released in 1972, on his album "Harvest", which was his biggest commercial success I think, so he was about 27 years old at that time. I would love if you would react to "On The Beach", another great Neil song!

This song came out in 1972 and back then the bands or singers sounded just as good on stage as they did in the studio. They had talent and no auto tune. there isn't much talent today, mostly auto tune and they sell themselves with nasty clothes and movements. It was real music back then full of great stories and love longs and talented musicians. I am very happy I grew up as a teenager in the 70's and could listen to this for the first time as it came out on the radio. The most fantastic bands were in this time era like never before or after. Queen, Led Zeppelin, The rolling Stones, Aero Smith, Bread, The Bee Gees, Jethro Tull, Santana, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (the same Neil Young you have here) and too many to list that were amazing.

My personal fave Neil songs: _Powderfinger_ ; _It's a Dream_ ; _Cinnamon Girl_ ; _Down by the River_ ; _Out on the Weekend_ . But there are so many....

Neil Young is a down to earth guy with a conscience.
