"Black Betty" was a cadence sung by black confederate soldiers during the civil war. Black Betty was a rifle made in Birmingham, Alabama. The company that made the gun made an "improved model", hence "Black Betty had a child". They hated the new rifle because it didn't shoot straight. Hence, "damned thing gone wild". Ram Jam put music to the 160 year old cadence.

You can still find the original version of it on yt if you looked for I heard a long time ago. It was sung a lot slower though. It was good to hear it in its original version, and then hear what it turned into. I have never heard the story about it being a rifle though. Kool

Weird story but when I was a kid there was a woman on our street named Betty (who is black) and every time he saw her my dad (who is white) would sing this song and every time she saw my dad she would sing play that funky music white boy. You know how we can make racism disappear? All white people sit down and listen to black music (Older music... Not this shit today) and all black people sit down and listen to white music. I'm black but I'm an old man and I learned in the 60's that music has no color. It brings all races and creeds together... Which is what we need more of today. I listened to Motown, then turned around and listened to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and then turned around and listened to Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, and Patsy Cline. I encourage more people to step outside of the box and listen to more types of music besides the music that coincides with your race. Hell, I've even listened to Classical Music (Which I really didn't like) Well except for A Fifth Of Beethoven in '76 during my Disco years 😂😂😂😂😂

Honestly, I care less about the skin color of the performers, and more about the sounds they make. If I like the sound, that's what matters to me. Even if I don't like the sound, if it's a quality sound, well done, I can respect that.

Well said man, I'm 49 year old white man from the UK. Because when I was a boy, I listened to ska. I have recently (last 4 years) got into 2 styles of music from Jamaica. Namely rocksteady and reggae, I love how rocksteady influenced music in the UK, when it arrived in the 60's. The brits added their touch, and black and white together created ska. Ska reached Jamaica via the USA music scene, and the Jamaican's turned it into reggae. It was a song called the Prince, that led me to a Jamaican artist called Prince Buster who created rocksteady. And wrote songs like Phoenix City and Al capone's guns don't harm you. As well as getting more familiar with Bob Marley, I've discovered Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, chronixx, and protégé. There is some really cool music flying around out there, and it's not often your mainstream pop artists.

Couldn't agree more. As a white man in my 40's, I like everything from classic rock, classic country, motown, and and even the "original" rock music from the 50's and 60's. Good music is simply good music, it doesn't matter color, never has. More people should be that way. Think of the blues greats, then Jimi Hendrix....then a young white boy from. TEXAS that idolized them all...Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughan....he didn't see color, he saw great musicians and wanted to be like them. All of America needs to follow that lead

Well said , man; before, anything could catch ones ear, now it's greatly genre - fied, compartmentalized, there is a great tendancy to pigeonhole people for what they are listening to, as opposed to trying a bit of everything.just like eating food, steak & lobster is good, but it can't ALWAYS be steak & lobster, right?

There's a lot of different takes on it, but most people agree that the black blues legend Lead Belly wrote this song or at least adapted an earlier version of it. Tom Jones even took a swing at it and then Ram Jam made it what everyone knows now, with a lot of popularity nowadays gained from the film "Blow". There's contention about whether "Black Betty" is an actual woman, pills or booze, but I think the important thing to recognize is that this song is straight up blues and its glory is owed to the masters of the craft, many of whom never get the recognition they deserve.

Yup. So you also went to Miami U in Oxford. Bill Bartlett. Lemon Pipers, then Beachwood Farm, then Star Struck, then Ram Jam. Everybody then went to the Purity in Oxford. I have a mono recording of Beachwood Farm playing in the Purity in 1969. Sat in a booth with my cheesy RCA auto-leveling mono cassette player/recorder, drank a couple pitchers with my then girlfriend/now wife. I digitized the entire recording, about a dozen tracks. Still listen to it today. You can imagine the sound quality. Not good, but Bill's solos come through great. About twenty years later sent it to a college friend and he flipped out. We both know this is a special recording.

In the late 80s and 90s A&R people wanted groups that sounded like known artists. Unsigned indie artists couldn’t catch a break. More and more clubs became pay-to-play and tribute bands became a thing (that I never understood). In the 2000s people wanted music for free (sharing/download). Many fabulous artists and their music remain unknown, not because they or the material wasn’t great, but they had to get a 9-5 in order to survive and support their family. The 60s-80s is where the creativity and originality in music exploded… Hopefully the unknown artists submitted their material to US Copyright Office, so at least their music didn’t or won’t die with them.

Makes me think that almost no one of the 330 MILLION people in America are actually racists, the government just WANTS or NEEDS us to be divided along some "lines" so they can play their politics to "this or that" group of people. There actually was a black man behind it. His name was Leadbelly. One of the original blues artists from the beginning of recorded music. House of the Rising Sun, Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, Goodnight Irene. He was the first to record many slave working songs like Pick a Bale of C**ton, and Midnight Special. George Harrison once said "No Leadbelly, no Beatles."

The first verse is about a musket popularly called Black Betty. It was very accurate when fired, and bam-ba-lam refers to the sound it made when fired. Someone made an "improved" version that failed because it couldn't be zeroed in for accuracy; in other words the damn thing gone blind. The second verse refers to a type of whiskey served in black bottles. It was at least 90 proof; in other words, very powerful stuff and "really gets me high". The third verse refers to a woman, any woman, living in Birmingham, Alabama. Probably a prostitute or a dance-hall girl who could "shake that thang".
