There's another intelligent band that quit touring to become a studio band, XTC. They lasted from 1978 to 2000 and made 14 albums. They started as a punkish band and ended up crafting some very smart pop albums. Everything from the 1983 "Mummer" right up to their last "Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2)". "Mummer" is my favorite, a little darker than the rest. "Skylarking" from 1986 was the most accessible but the follow-up "Oranges & Lemons" scored even higher in the charts. Give them a try.

The mood of these lyrics always conveyed to me that this a guy, a 30ish rock star, in a social situation where a younger girl is flirting with him. He can't relate to her at all, and isn't going to go there. BUT...part of him kinda wants to, to recapture his youth. They leave it open ended, I think, about how it turned out. Because it isn't really about what happens, it's about a guy feeling old when he's 30. The role of the girl in the song is just to represent that disconnect between the young person he was and the older man he's become.

I have no idea if it still is. Tequila, pot and a nineteen year old girl all combined to "make tonight a wonderful thing". It may sound creepy to you but back then that was seen as the typical "rock" lifestyle, or the lifestyle of highly famous people in general.

When i was a musicseller in the 90's, as a way to get into jazz coming from a rock/metal perspective, i would suggest something like Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior: a mix of prog, jazz, rock and R&B. As for what the song's about: he's getting in his 30's - he simply wakes up to the fact somebody who looks like he could hit if off with, is, in fact, no longer "avalaible" to him, a generation away from his, can't even relate to the same icons of music.
