Arizona Bay is a reference to a Bill Hicks joke, about how he would be happy is California was swallowed up by an earthquake because then his property in Arizona would become oceanfront property. This whole songs is largely based on that Bill Hicks joke. Clearly it resonated with Maynard.

I was born and raised in LA and lived in So. Cal. for almost 40 years. Yeah, everyone's out for themselves. For all it's beauty, it can be a cold, miserable place to live. I saw Tool live at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine during the 2002 Lateralus tour, and Maynard dedicated Aenima and Ticks and Leeches to all the celebrities in the front row :D
@jubjub7406

that makes sense. those songs especially refer to the types of people that would be in the front rows. Yes, there's humor herre, but what I get from it really speaks to reality especially not. Tool was alway ahead of their time.

None of you get it lol. Anima and Animus are part of Carl Jungs collective consciousness theories. While this is also a play on Enema. This entire album conveys what Jung was theorizing. "Flush it all away". Is talking about the cancerous psychology of American life in general. Learn to swim, means to think for yourself. Not to actually learn to swim. Hes masking all of this behind the idea of California falling into the Ocean. And while it is literal to some degree. He is 100% talking about conciousness. Try and read between the lines.

First Tool song I really got into. Metal Show, 2FM, Sunday Nights, back in say, lateish '96. The album had been out a few weeks,and this was gettin spinned on the radio, along with Stinkfist on said show. Some of it reminded me here and there of the alternative/heavy grunge that I love- but there was someting totally unique goin on that I did't initially understand, register with. This was more "instant" than Stinkfist, cos of the huge rushing riffs and tempos. I remember talking to a friend about this song at the time,and he too was totally intrigued. We only knew this, and Stinkfist from the radio,and MTV,but they were such a curious band then to learn about. They never appear in their amazing, visually headspinning videos, they were'nt as interviewed/featured in the magazines like other bands of their time. I remember taping the song off the radio,and getting more and more drawn in. Those drums were like galloping wheels of steel that dragged me along and along, propelled along by the emotional rush of riffs, breakdowns,and a near cinematic climax. Fantastic. With Third Eye- the presetting interlude is 4 minutes of howling wind, and impending doom. It does sound like a cool setup to the gargantuan finale of Third Eye, so Id listen to the interlude aswell, as a build up. Looking forward to yer reaction of Third Eye! That for many, is the big one.

One of my favorite songs for a long time; it was hilarious hearing people call it “Learn to Swim” back in the day. Great reaction again, it is better with not so much research beforehand, I agree with this move. It is better for you as a first time listener as well as your audience.

You have a fairly good impression of Los Angeles and what it’s like to live there (obviously, good is subjective in this instance). I was born and raised in LA, lived there for 28 years and worked in EMS in LA for a little over half a decade...it’s DEFINITELY not for everyone (moved about 3 years ago, and the only thing I can say I miss is my friends and family that live there). If you’re the type of person that likes some nightlife, the convenience of a major city plus expansive suburbs with a huge variety of things to do and explore (from theme parks to museums to an enormous variety of food), or the entertainment industry is your calling...then LA may be nice for you. But if you don’t care about that, the only thing to draw to LA is the “touristy” option (the variety of things to do), which is a good reason to VISIT Los Angeles, but not a good reason to live there, because at the end of the day...the other two reasons (“nightlife” scene and entertainment industry) are ultimately shallow passions and desires. I’m not saying that art is shallow, or that actors are...nothing of that (don’t call me pessimist...try and read between the lines 🙂). The industry is what’s shallow, because it doesn’t care about actual talent if it can make a buck without the effort, and it’s as true now as it was 20 years ago when this album came out; reboots being the most obvious example of profits over quality in film-making (and the examples are plenty across the industry...it’s no secret talent isn’t sufficient for success; it’s not even clear that talent is a necessary condition for success with the explosion of things like reality tv and, more recently, social media)

I think 10,000 Days is for the most “out there” fans looking for an intense psychedelic journey. Lateralus is for those seeking clean, collected, inner peace. Ænima is for those rock fans who like the classical sound but also wants some cool vast vibes. Undertow and Opiate is for people who want angry and solid metal with a twang. 10,000 Days is there best work.

It spoke to my nihilism, let me know I wasn't insane with my thoughts. Then, ofc I got pulled in. Flush it all away, I thought about what that meant, I mean really meant. What it would take to tear the whole thing down. This led me on a journey that helped me to develop my own philosophy of the world. Then I thought about the unlikely choices besides tossing the whole board.

A 3 ring circus is an american term describing a low budget traveling circus that moves around the country. In this case complete with the sideshow freaks. You pay a little extra and they let you see bearded ladies, midgets and oddities. It's the freak show. Knowing Maynard's tendencies as we do, he probably means what you said as well. I don't know if it's real popular anymore, but people used to get enemas. Basically flush the shit out of you. In true form, Maynard's comedically saying LA needs an enema.

the song Ænema is a combination of two words Anima, and enema. Anima referring to the unconscious, feminine side/soul of males. (Hence the kinda emotional take Maynard has on this song, just saying "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck ..." you don't really see that with him too much in music, blaming others that is.) Enema is what Maynard was talking about at the end of the video, cleaning your colon. So you could say he's talking about a soul cleansing in this song, hence the lines "don't just call me a pessimist, try and read between the lines." He's obviously messing around and adding a comedic twist to it, because he's really a troll deep down, but that's what all of that means. IMO anyway.

The explanation Maynard gives in that clip is a troll. The title comes from a combination of the words Anima (from the Latin for mind or soul), and Enema (a liquid that flushes away impacted waste). It's a sort of spiritual or mental cleansing.

He wants California to fall off into the Pacific Ocean. Arizona is the next state to the east. Thus Arizona bay.

You were close on your analysis of the three ring circus sideshow. Three ring circus is American idiom. When you use three ring circus in comparison to someone's life or lifestyle as in LA, you're saying that it's a mess and a disaster and too many different things are going on at once just like in a three ring circus.

Ah yes, Maynard's love letter to LA, lol, California needs an enema to purge the sickness that is LA is the point of the song I think.

Pretty much follows with the split of the fault line that is on the west coast. If it ever truly splits the west coast will end up in the oceanalong with the corruption currently displayed in Hollywood and the west coast culture. That's where his line " See you down in Arizona's Bay" and "Moms gonna flush it all away" speaking of mother nature.

Mom please flush it all away... Anima is the female spirit, an enema is a rectal flush, to flush out the bullshit. That's the meaning.
