For comparision, the melbourne city loop was constructed around 1971. NZ is only around half a century behind.

Yeah, have you heard about Elon's 'Hyperloop ' in 'Murica? That whole concept is about 50 years old, now being 're-developed' as very innovative. Und in Churmany, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn happened about 90 years ago, before WW II....(der Churman feiglings were hiding in dere during ze 'Murican 'carpet' Bombing of Hamburg , double benefit, built by der Engineers...) Are you are Connoisseur Consumer of public transport, or more of a Civil Engineer, mate?

Have to consider that Melbourne is a much bigger city than Auckland with an easier geography to deal with. The challenges of infrastructure projects like these are more nuanced than most people realize. Auckland is particularly difficult.

And Melbourne had a million more people than Auckland does today in 1971. But bonus points for negativity.

It's not a choice. This rail doesn't represent 16 lanes of highway capacity because there is no infrastructure to get people on the rail. No decent size park and rides etc. This whole thing is a massive waste of money.

Why would you need car parks in the city centre for the train station? The point of this is transit, from out of the city center, to bring workers and customers to the businesses there. People have legs, they can walk the 5-10 min to their destination from the station

You've missed the point entirely, this project won't only allow more access points in the CBD but it will also double the capacity of the entire network, increase train speeds and frequencies and encourage investment along transit corridors and the CBD. The current price tag, while terribly high it was pretty much unavoidable due to covid and the lockdowns.

Given the amount of disruption to businesses due to the rail link build, why do they think building a rail link down Dominion Rd, is a good idea? There will be NO small businesses left!
@rp7784
@rp7784 Жыл бұрын
You shouldn't assume circumstances will be the same for either project. Compensation is usually offered to make up for any losses due to construction of a project. But your thinking of the short term, it's terrible that businesses we're lost but eventually they do come back, especially after a big transport project like this, business always comes back. Tbh, short term losses are always expected with infrastructure projects everywhere, it's shit but it happens, when building infrastructure you always need to anticipate losses, whether it be retail or housing, but you need to be mindful of the longer term economic benefits.
@gavinivers8941
@gavinivers8941 Жыл бұрын
@@rp7784 And those business that are lost, are lost. The business owners loss everything as many small business are geared with a loan against their home. Lets not forget most if all small business owners have no Kiwi Saver, their business is their Kiwi Saver. Your theory might seem wonderful on paper but in the cold light of day, many will go bust, and will never recover.
@rp7784
@rp7784 Жыл бұрын
@@gavinivers8941it's not a theory, in the industry long term benefits are what takes precedence, not short term losses. The best they can do during infrastructure projects is offer compensation, or payments to the business owners, how they dealt with those around the CRL is poor process but don't assume the same for a different project. And even after that if businesses are lost then that's something that must be accepted because eventually business returns, it always happens after infrastructure projects are completed, it incentivises investment in the area and business always returns. If you were to scruple at delivering infrastructure projects because of business opposition then nothing would be built, they'll try and work with businesses as they can but there will be losses. It's not a theory it's a circumstance that every country has come to learn, but afterwards business always returns, infrastructure projects are good at attracting new investments to an area. Now with Auckland light rail, I would have preferred a street level option, but with what the government has planned it will increase density along the corridor, and give Public Transport access to thousands more people, and link up the transit network. It will also decrease congestion along the corridor and it's feeder routes, the Dominion Rd corridor is in need of serious investment and redevelopment, and that corridor is lacking in public transport considering it's one of the main corridors into the city.

This is still an impressive major infrastructure project. Brisbane is a far more populous city, and will be hosting the Olympics soon and therefore needs significant infrastructure improvements to cater for that, and the Australian economy can afford it. Why be negative and downplay this amazing project? New Zealander's used to be proud of their countries achievements.

It's actually innovative and should have been done years ago. Look at Melbournes inner city loop and how it creates great movement in the much larger city of Victoria. Melbournes public transport system designed and heavily influenced off of Hong Kong public transport system. This is only the first step. Light rail will create the wynyard airport connect whilst more projects to hopefully connect the north shore should be on the way.
@dave24-73
@dave24-73 Жыл бұрын
@@101hundred there is nothing innovative about it, we already have an existing rail link, this is a complete and utter waste of money when NZ is in a crisis. Over a billion per 1km is disgraceful waste when it isn’t needed. Innovate means new and different, there is nothing new about this at all, with many examples overseas.
@dave24-73

@@101hundred note this isn’t a loop it’s a single direction and the start of trying to get better rail out west, the place where it floods the most, I’d rather see the money put into resolving the flooding at the moment. Ask yourself this at $5 each way so $10 a return trip, how many people and how many years will it take to pay this 3km rail back.

CRL is a waste of money and pointless
@rp7784
@rp7784 11 ай бұрын
The CRL is ridiculously expensive but alot of that was unavoidable. It's not pointless, the CRL has a multitude of benefits, especially with Auckland's growing population. A link through the CBD will allow capacity, frequency and speed of the entire Network to double. It will incentivise urban development and intensification along transit corridors and access hub's. Increase the number of people who will have access to PT Provide more access points into the City Centre therefore move more people in and out of the CBD more efficiently. It will also open up corridors for the western line.
