First of all a massive thanks to Kodak Alaris for allowing me to be one of the few to beta test this amazing film.
Thanks to my friends at Indie Film Lab for scanning these and working through that process with me too. I had them give me a set of corrected and uncorrected scans on one of the batches which was super helpful.
In late July of 2018 I was contacted by Kodak Alaris about beta testing their new reboot of Kodak Ektachrome E100 Color Reversal Film. I had 10 rolls to shoot and tried to get as much variety as I could in that month.

Superb assessment Benj. I'm 'old school' (@71 years of age - believe it! Kodachrome 25 was my 'go-to') and your results here are enough for me to try the new Ektachrome.

Good stuff, Benj. I’ll have to limber up my FM2 with the Ektachrome. Used to develop it myself when I was stationed in West Germany. Also shot Agfachtome and, of course, Kodachrome 64. Looks like the good old days are returning just a bit. Enjoyed your work!

Jennifer M That’s not gonna happen as the developing process is too difficult, many of the chemicals are not available now. It’s possible they could bring back a more vivid Ektachrome which tbh would be just as good.
@WeekdayProductions
@WeekdayProductions 5 жыл бұрын
shame though - kodakchrome was the most chromatically stable film ever made, other slide films fade or colours go a bit wonky over time. ektachrome is just another E6, not much to get excited about over fuji (which was always the more highly regarded E6). You can dev kodachrome in B+W process, the magic is in the re-introduction of the dye into the different layers. Not an insurmountable problem for chemistry, but it would make for a very expensive film. I'm going out on a limb and predicting that like the resurgence of other analogue formats, it will get a revival, but not for a long time!! @@teleaddict23

I just finished scanning my 84 year old father-in-law's 7,000+ slides from the 1950s through the 1990's. Most of the Ektachrome slides had degraded terribly (all slides had been well cared for in metal slide boxes), some were unrecognizable as to what the image had been and some lost all color to the point of having just red. While the Kodachrome slides looked like they hadn't lost any of their vibrant colors. In case you're wondering about the permanency of developed slides. Nowadays we can scan slides as soon as we get them, so maybe it's not an issue for you.

Very nice! Reminds me of the old Agfa RSX II 100. I had the pleasure of trying out a roll of the Agfa that had been sitting in the freezer since it was new the other day, and boy did that look stunning! Very true to life and super detailed, much like the Ektachrome in your video. Can't wait to try it! And like many people in the comment section, I really hope they bring out the medium format version soon!!!

I never really liked Ektachrome. I guess, tbh it was because it was too real. I loved Kodachrome. It made stuff look better than real life. It was hard to use, and expensive to have processed, but every now and then, you’d nail the exposure, and Kodachrome would give you a treasure, a beautiful, saturated image with an almost 3D look that would become a way to peer back in time. Nothing else in photography like it. Oh, and hey- you’re a good photographer. Thank you for videos like this.

The dark blue shadows brought back some memories of using Ektachrome back in the 70s. Everyone shot (positive) slides back then, or black and white. Color negatives in 35mm were too small to maintain sharpness in the color enlarging process.

On film days, before I went digital 2005, I always shot Velvia 50. I just loved it, the tones in sunset and small grain, despite it's questionable skin tones, very strong contrast, incredibly deep black and magenta like overcast. I mostly shot landscapes with tripoid with bracketing, but since shooting landscapes was my passion, my freezer was filled with Velvia and since that was the film I bought in bulk, that was the film I used for everything. In hindshight, maybe I should have had 400 to put in to my camera when I handed it to my brother to take photos at my wedding...

great review, pretty sure exposure bracketing was almost a requirement for slide film, just in case... although now that it costs $2.50 per shot(excluding development costs), not sure if it is as viable. I have been noticing recently that when you take the "character" out of colour negative film I am not seeing a lot of reason to shoot it, I think that digital has gotten so good now that a good/affordable scan of negative film is not better than a decent digital. However seeing the clarity/detail in the slide film means there might be life in it yet. I love shooting with older cameras, a decent 35mm camera still weighs less than a dslr and especially a full fram dslr. thank you for the great video.

Very interesting. Back in the 1980s I shot a lot in that area using Kodachrome (my favorite), Ektachrome, and Fujichrome. I loved K25 and K64 as well as K400 for moderately low light situations. One thing I liked about the slide films of that era is that they were reasonably tolerant of slight under exposure which usually resulted in a bit deeper color. Typically I would set my Minolta X570 to under expose by 1/3 stop to help prevent accidentally blowing out the highlights. The new Ekta looks pretty nice but I suspect that it will not be as archival as Kodachrome was. I am difinitely going to dust of the Minolta and give it a try though when the opportunity presents itself.
