This short video takes you behind the hoardings to get an inside look at HS2's first pioneering 'green tunnel', which is being constructed in Chipping Warden, Northants.
The tunnel is being built in sections, with a team of engineers working together in sequence to excavate the earth, lay the concrete floor, install the pre-cast elements that form the tunnel structure and prepare the trackbed within the tunnel, on which the high-speed HS2 trains will run at speeds of up to 225mph.
Unlike a normal underground tunnel, the 2.5km (1.5 mile) Chipping Warden Green Tunnel in Northamptonshire is being built on the surface using a pioneering off-site manufacturing approach to speed up construction and improve efficiency.
A relief road, which was completed in summer 2021, has helped to take HS2 vehicles - and other local traffic - away from the centre of the village of Chipping Warden.
Construction of the tunnel, designed to blend the high speed railway into the landscape and reduce disruption for communities, is expected to be complete in 2024.
Chipping Warden is one of five ‘green tunnels’ that are being built on phase one of the HS2 project, which is designed to improve links between London, Birmingham and the north, help level-up the economy and provide a low carbon alternative to car and air travel.

People don’t understand how much this is needed. Especially for the environment, it will take some car travel off roads hopefully improving them also.
@xr6lad
@xr6lad 2 жыл бұрын
No it won’t. Those that travel by train do so now. Those that travel by car will continue to do so for the sheer convenience of door to door and stopping. I love HS2 but I honestly wish Transit nerds understood why people use cars. Plus for HS2 to work it needs to travel at high speeds and therefore stop at fewer places otherwise the high speed effect is lost; making it less likely to be used by those in towns in between.

@@xr6lad The main environmental benefit of HS2 is that it will take high speed intercity services off the East and West Coast main lines. With the high speed trains out of the way it will clear more paths for the slower freight and commuter stopping services. This means more freight by rail and less trucks on the road.

When people complain about the cost THIS is why HS2 is more expensive than other projects. We care for the environment and the countryside and local communities as much as is possible with a massive project like this. Other countries (like China and France) would just bulldoze a cutting and tough on everyone.
@CRIMSONANT1
@CRIMSONANT1 2 жыл бұрын
"Care for the countryside & the environment"? The whole project is an environmental disaster of epic proportions .. HS2 Ltd have already incurred multiple fines for breaches of environmental issues. They've broken promise after promise relating to the environment from day one. Hundreds of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire all perished because of a lack of aftercare. Waterways polluted, hedgerows full of nesting birds destroyed in seconds. The list goes on & on. Excellent news that the Eastern leg & the Golbourne link have been scrapped & fingers crossed the rest of this monstrous vanity project never sees the light of day. The biggest White Elephant this country has ever seen & in a post Brexit, post Covid society, the proposed passenger numbers could NEVER be achieved. HS2 are stating that to "break even" with a subsidy of 50/60%, they need almost 600,000 passengers travelling between London & B'ham DAILY Given that the average number on that route is 96,000, even the most enthusiastic HS2 fan boy can see those figures are totally unattainable.

China for sure but France has similar regulations concerning environment, communities and people like all advanced countries. Is this just a ludicrous attempt to insult the French? Seriously one can't compare France to China.
@1chish
@1chish 2 жыл бұрын
@@TigruArdavi Calm down ..... Where was I comparing France to China? I just said that neither would go to the lengths HS2 has as regards doing infrastructure like this. The comparison was with HS2 not with each other. maybe try to read more carefully? I can assure you that France has a very different attitude to the UK. The planning process is nothing like as long or consultative. In fact the French take the attitude of "Your house is worth X take it or leave it because its coming down". Their priority is the National benefit rather than other matters to which i referred. I will happily relate how I know this but your inference was utterly banal and ignorant.

Tree roots have a habit of getting into places that they are not wanted and I can see that the tunnel is going to need works to stabilise it as tree roots make their way through cracks in the construction sections as they seek out water.

Suceess depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Show me a man with no investment and I'll tell you how long it takes to fail. The investment creates a safe haven for the future. With the right investment choi noce that has at least a minimum risk of 2% and with expert advice, both profits and interest are 100% guaranteed.

Why is always this stupid argument brought forward?🤦‍♂ As if HS2 was only intended for office people or desk workers. Even desk workers need to travel at times, many professions are not a desk job and can only be done on-site and people need to travel therefore, and a great part of mobility is leisure based. People travel to meet friends and relatives, go on holiday or just visit other cities and places and attend events. There is a high and growing demand for mobility, and except maybe for a bunch of retarded hippies, no one wants to go back to the middle ages when you spent your whole life in one village. To meet that demand as sustainbable as possible, rail infrastructure needs to be ramped up massivly in th UK.

How much time will it shave off the journey between say, Birmingham and London? How much will tickets cost? Who's going to be able to afford to travel on this? If it saves 30 minutes - or 45 minutes, or whatever, it doesn't justify the enormous cost of this thing. Just because we can build something like this doesn't mean we should. The only way this makes sense is when you factor in the policy that 'personal transport is so last century', and the New Normal will be reduced access to air travel, city to city. Fewer private cars will mean public transport needs to be improved. Ordinary folk won't be able to afford to travel on this, the vast sums would be better spent just improving, for example the east - west rail link up north. Never mind, we'll own nowt and be happy, lol.
