This is a First Look at an inexpensive Martin. Here I talk about the features, and demo it in acoustic mode only. The next video will cover the built in electronics.

I bought that guitar, or one very much like it, and have enjoyed learning with it. On a somewhat unrelated note, I'm encouraged to hear what the guitar is capable of in skilled hands. Thanks for the video.

I’ve owned the OOOx1ae for 4 years. I demo’d it for 2 years before I bought it and every time I was amazed at how much I loved the balanced sound and how well it took hard playing. I have 5 Taylors including a custom jumbo and 5 Martins including the D-18GE. I owned the 000-18GE and traded it shortly after buying the 000x1ae. Despite a whole closet full of great guitars, this is my go-to guitar around the house, travel, picnic, camping, etc. I take it everywhere and don’t have to worry about getting it dinged up. I think the laminate B/S actually makes this sound warmer and more balanced than solid B/S small body guitars that all sound thin and blow out with harder strumming. If you play mostly fingerstyle, plenty of others can work, but they can’t take a flatpick or hard playing. If you change the strings to Elixir PB nanos, it gets a lot warmer and won’t sound as shrill as in your demo here.

Well considering back in 1975 the first guitar I owned came from the Sears liquidation store for $17.00 this is a Corvette compared to a three cylinder Geo. I know I’m comparing apples to oranges but back in the day when Cale Yarborough raced it was always said the car didn’t have to be set up perfect that Cale would make up the rest by the way he manhandled the car. I think it’s the same way with musicians some can make some instruments sound better than others can. I mean naturally this guitar is not gonna sound like a D28 but if you can’t afford a D28 then this guitar is a diamond in the rough. I have one and I love it. One side note I’m not a musician that can make any guitar sound good and this guys playing is fine.

Hi Dennis, Thanks for the great review of this fine guitar. If I may say, I have the Martin Dreadnought Junior. 24" scale, all-solid-wood Sapele, which is ( I believe ) an African Mahogany. As a 15/16 size Dreadnought, it has good "boomy" projection, and that nice, mellow Martin sound. I bought it as a travel/camping/knockabout-type guitar, but I find that it is fast becoming my everyday go to couch guitar. I just subscribed to your channel and I am checking out your other great videos. Take care, and God Bless, Rob

I bought same guitar at same STOD feb 2020. I got last one as it was replaced with DX1ae after I hit the button. Great Deal. Bought a Gator hard shell case for $89 on Amazon. Fits like a glove.

Very good and honest review. Best I’ve seen for this model. Do you think the newer updated model 000-X2e is much better than this one? I’m torn between the two

Just ordered the same guitar. It was $359 shipped from MF's stupid deal of the day. I'm excited. I know it's a low end Martin, but I always wanted a Martin 000. I'm excited!

I happened to discover this guitar today in a shop in NYC, sitting next to $2k and up, Martins. It looked and sounded so good, I nearly got it for $580 ($20 discount on floor model). But one of the frets around 12 or 13 buzzed, and I held off. After some research I found out that the sides and back have no wood at all, not even veneer. It's 100% compressed paper, glue and ink (for the imitation wood look). Also, the nut and saddle are not even bone or tusk, just plastic. All this being said; that quality spruce top, and nice low action (except for the one fret buzz) make all the difference. There can be no denying, this guitar sounds and feels great. Plugged it in too, and the Fishman electrics are fine. Although the tone control knob doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect on tone, the volume knob works. I find it especially tasteful that these control knobs are hidden out of sight, inside the guitar hole. This is a big plus. My conclusion: Even though Martin successfully pulled off that trick, to get a great sound and performance out of mostly compressed paper, plastic and plywood, the psychological effect of knowing the guitar you're holding is mostly plastic is too much of a turn-off, for me, to want to actually own one. On the other hand, today's space-age composite materials are no doubt, superior in strength and durability to finely crafted, solid woods. As such, this is probably a good guitar to take on the road, and the high quality, built-in electronics mean you're ready for all occasions.

Hi Dennis! (I also know you from the Firefly group.) I agree with you on this guitar 1,000%. I also got that Great deal on this guitar from Musician’s Friend. Coincidentally, i also have the D’angelico you mentioned (going to check out your video on that guitar right after i post this). I do fingerstyle and I’m getting into flat picking. So, I’m thinking of setting up the Martin with custom light strings for fingerstyle and the D’angelico with heavier strings fir my flatpicking. Any thoughts about this? If I do set up the Martin for fingerstyle, I may also put maybe an LR Baggs anthem blended pickup system (or Fischman rare earth, or K & Ks) into the Martin since i also do looping and sometimes play percussively. One thing about my Martin that is bothering me is the tendency for the high E string to slip off the neck when i do pull offs on 2nd or 3rd fret. I occasionally have this issue with other guitars even if they’re the same brand and model . I’m wondering if the nut is glued in by hand therefore causing very small variance from guitar to guitar. I’m going to my local guitar center later since they have a couple of these Martins out for playing. I’ll see if I have the same slippage problem. If they don’t, I’ll talk to my MF gear advisor about getting a replacement for the Martin and hope the nut is set a little differently on the replacement. I actually had this issue on a Firefly Thinline. I tried racking the neck but when i sent a photo to George (great guy from the Firefly company) he felt it might be the nut and sent a new thinline which was perfect. So let me know if you think the E string is also a little close to the edge on your Martin. Really love your videos! And thanks! P.S. I couldn’t find your video on the D’angelico. Could you please provide a link? Thanks

I think you have it right, the D'Angelico for heavier playing, the Martin for finger picking. The D'Angelico will do both fine, but I think the tone of the Martin is better. I have a Fender Brown Derby resonator tuned to open G, and will likely keep the Martin tuned to open D., which I use a pick but it's a lot of single note and light strum combos I keep the D'Angelico and my Taylor tuned normally. I might not have the D'Angelico video posted (or made!) I need to look. I've been busy in the real world, but if it isn't made, it is on my list, so stay tuned.

Dennis, any idea as to who makes a gig bag that will fit the FF338 guitar?
@dennislbrown
@dennislbrown 4 жыл бұрын
Any gig bag that fits an Ibanez ASx3 series or Gibson/Epiphone 335 should work. It is slightly smaller than the 335, just like the AS53/AS73/AS93 Ibanez models.

In describing the guitar you got just about everything wrong. The body and back are HPL there is no wood underneath, The only wood is the top which is solid sitka spruce not plywood and the bracing. Nobody seems to know exactly what the bridge is made of. The neck is HPL laminate and the fretboard is Richlight. There is no wood in the neck. The original MSRP price for the X series was $499. The X-2s are $699. The X-1 is discontinued but there are still plenty in stock And the body is the standard width for a 000 not because it's an X. A 000 has a depth of 4" in all models and always had. The new model is the X2 but I own a DX1 and a 000X2 and can't tell any difference in the build. It is what it is. The stereotypical Martin sound is probably a Dreadnought. It sounds like a 000 because that's what it is and yes you can bang heavier on the X-Dreadnaught. They are the same price so pick the sound that suits you. I like the 000 personally. The Road Series is probably the perfect gig guitar. It's solid wood. Made in the US, sounds like a Martin but is cheap enough to be used as a tool and not a collector's item. Not quite twice the price of an X. Having said all that the X is a great buy for the money and remember that if you plug it in you can make it sound pretty much anyway you want so there isn't any reason you can't gig with it.
