Shawn Clement's Wisdom in Golf Lessons

Күн бұрын

This first move in the downswing is very much a product of the right focus on a specific task that will engage the body’s “self-preserving system” to shift weight on time and clear the hips the right amount to find the direction we want to start the ball according to the flight plan we chose to begin with. To do this well, we need to understand how the weight shifts from the backswing into the downswing as this will prepare the transition to facilitate this engagement. We have such an amazing machine; all we need to do is give it the right simple task!

The "squat" in the downswing to engage ground forces in the swing is explained well as a result of the task of throwing the club toward the target and not a separate task to be performed which would distract from the necessary focus on throwing the club toward the target. Very good clarification.

Wow! This finally clicked for me after watching Alex Forte “ The Art of Simple Golf” and his video on keeping your back to the target a little longer at the start of the downswing. This brought me back to this video of Shawn's ..keeping my back turned to the target for just that split second longer allowed for what Shawn is explaining here to happen. BAM! The club head just crushed the ball again and again, super compressed. Many Thanks to both of you golf geniuses! Mike.

Great stuff right here Shawn and just prior to 3 minute mark I was setting here screaming to myself, "Yessssss, exactly what Moe used to describe and say he felt like he was setting down", he also said he used to practice setting down in that position club held out at 9 o"clock position looking straight on at him, said he would sometimes stay in that position for what seemed like 5 minutes.....and he would spring off towards target from his back leg to where he knew his legs got wider apart through impact! I was just studying and looking back at the late Ernest Jones, who also was a huge proponent of the "Task" at hand and allowing the body to know subconsciously how to produce the swing! He was also big on seeing the picture in the mind of where you wanted ball to go and the more we focus on that, the more the body subconsciously works on our bodies to produce the desired outcome! Same things you share in your teachings.... I just left a comment including your channel on a comment under an Ernest Jones video letting another troubled golfer know about you and the channel! Wish I knew exactly which video Moe talks about that in....he goes into detail more so than any other time about the transition etc....great video as always here Shawn!

Weight shift should never be something to think about in the swing; this comes as you stay with a task TOWARDS THE TARGET. In our premium channel, my favourite task is sending grass clippings or divots into the direction of flight; see the “kinetic chain facilitation series” for that one and be amazed and the ease and the power produced!

I have to say I have tried to figure out the best way for me to get my hips to turn more in the transition. But your teaching philosophy has given me a practical and non-thinking approach. A natural way to execute the golf swing. I have been working on your tips and drills. Thanks to our teachings I can now do the walking drill ( which I could never do before smoothly ). Again a work in progress. I have to figure out how to keep my hands from getting too squirrelly during the drill.

The grass whip goes back to "Wild Bill" Mehlhorn During golf's era of great ball strikers. Mehlhorn utilized the grass whip in his own practice routine and recommended it in his teaching. Ben Hogan, the greatest ball striker of all time said Mehlhorn was the best player he had ever seen from tee to green, high praise from the man who rarely missed a fairway or green. Of all the videos you have made, this one and the feet-together drill should put you in the Golf Hall of Fame.

wow. great lesson. makes total sense. we weight shift in almost everything else we do; even around the house. example- I even weight shift when I open my kitchen slider door to go out to the deck. On the golf course, I've been doing that move for a few years, but sometimes struggle for consistency. I had to adjust my clubhead position at address (right before backswing) to a slightly high "hover" position, in order to keep from scraping ground on the downswing. This type of movement is more athletic and it feels more natural. It has added significant power/distance. I hope to unleash more of the catapult/whip effect with more practice. Your video adds a ton of perspective!! Thanks!!

Before seeing this video, i had been working on my driver - i was focusing on pausing at the top, sliding the hips forward before the upper body begins to uncoil, and envisioning my club head being thrown slightly outwards to the right of my target. This is basically what i was doing, and it helped considerably. However, some of the keys and feels here are easier to remember, so off to the range i go to work on this. By the way, that big guy has insane club head speed!

Shawn this is pure gold. Although I've heard similar descriptions before, your illustration made it click. I think it's because others have explained it as "after you get to the top, then shift." You showed it in transition as the club is still moving up/back. It reminds me of what Mike Milaska says, there's no top of the swing. I've only hit a couple dozen balls after watching this, but many of the issues that I was having are gone or greatly minimized and I'm hitting a club further with better compression. Thanks so much!

Shawn was a massive part of my success and I’ll explain why. I started golfing in 2011. Shawn Clement was one of the first guys I came across. I was young and athletic but had never played golf. I followed Shawn for a bit and imitated some of his videos. For me, at the time he was “just ok” since I was new to golf. As I got better I started watching Mcilroy/hogan videos and got away from Shawn videos. I eventually became a scratch player for about 5 years 2014-2018 mainly because of my pure ball striking. I loved hitting balls . After that I became a casual golfer in the summer and focused on other things. My game slowly started to crumble year by year and I play at about a 6 now. My ball striking is not pure anymore and it drives me crazy. I can still play good golf but I’m a shell of what I was as a player and I haven’t been able to figure out why, and it’s bothered me for a long time. UNTIL this year. I’ve realized Shawn was a HUGE part of my early success as a player. He taught me the basics and most importantly, rhythm in my swing!!!! My transition was always so powerful and in sync and I took that for granted. I was able to shallow the club easily learning from him , something I’ve been struggling to remember how to do for the past few years. I went back to square one. Who did I first learn from? It was Shawn. I have to hit balls for weeks pretending to be him 😂 with his little rhythm old man swings, but they are SO SO SO effective. I have been able to eventually get my swing how I want it again, but it’s all in thanks to Shawn for showing me rhythm, up and back down. He has a calming voice , so calming I have his voice in my head when I hit balls sometimes. My ball striking has been excellent again and I tried MANY other things and drills, nothing worked. I never realized It was Shawn Clement who taught me how to hit a golf ball properly. Thank you I can now shoot 72 again at 40 years old.

Hey Shawn! Moving to my front side has, and still is an issue. Yes, you directed me to many of the premium videos, all terrific. I see you lift one heel, then the other at different points during your swing. Always assumed lifting of the heels was solely to for golfers with flexibility issues to make a full turn. Sometimes, yes, but no, no, no... the heel action is used as a timing mechanism (boom!). I love it and am adding this move to help me with timing and moving forward... and get out of the way so my arms have room. Thanks again!

This may sound crazy but has anyone ever tried actually hitting balls with the feet together drill. Great pivot and a steady swing center. Try it you will be surprised on how solid the contact feels.

Yeah, but not enough power for serious driving, over 275 yds. Also try holding your left leg behind you in the stance. Will straighten out your shot but at the expense of yards.

I wish I had a teacher like yourself for disc golf, oh man that would be great haha! If you're interested in what I'm talking about, look at backhand throws from the best like Eagle McMahon, Simon Lizotte, Kevin Jones, Paul mcbeth, and David Wiggins who set the world record drive at 1100 feet I know your a golf teacher and it's wishful thinking but I bet you'd have a natural understanding of how it works. Cheers!

This makes so much more sense. Shawn what do you say to the folks teaching one to keep your weight on the front side from the get go (I think they call it "stack and tilt")? Many of these folks teaching this are students of the pro (can't recall his name?) who hit like a 500 yard drive in a PGA event and the idea is to keep the weight on the front side thus eliminating any chance of a sway?

Hey Ken! It is not about preventing a “perceived mistake” but much more about the task you need to deliver an action through to target. When that happens, the engagement of the kinetic chain is much more positive and swaying is eliminated. See “throw the club straight shawn clement” as a great task! Then see all the different tasks that you can use on our premium channel at wisdom in golf premium.com and search “tasks” and “kinetic chain”

I loved the part where you said that the weight shift was done - ie slight lowering of body on to left leg at the top if the swing. Cant wait for end of this damned lockdown and try it out. Thank you Shawn. PS keeping my left arm straight is my biggest challenge.

Hey Joe! See an oldie but goodie called “fencing for power shawn clement” and on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com the titles to watch are “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning”, “snap release polish” (my favourite polish drill), TURBO CHARGE lead hand release and TURBO CHARGE trail hand release. Then you bring the whole thing together with “Target confirmation series” which takes that nice fresh new release of yours and locks it on a target. Enjoy!😀👍

I have been struggling with balance in transition. I hit low pulls and blocks lots of the time. Not solid at all. it might be due to a strained left knee because at times in the past everything seemed natural. At any rate this video makes sense and feels good when I try it here at the house. I like the one statement about "staying close to the front leg". It should serve to maintain balance and make the transition with much less effort. Thanks Shawn.

One of the best videos I've ever seen on the golf swing. I noticed myself doing this, and I thought it was somehow wrong that my butt was sticking out in the other direction. Can you elaborate on what you're talking about when you describe Mu "compressing the volleyball"? I didn't understand what you were describing as well as I understood what you meant with Sav.

Hey Ken! We have come a long way since then; if you go to our premium channel, you will see that the task used (if it’s a good task like throw the club to target) combined with the awareness of where the BLUR OF CLUB IS PASSING, the fact that you are aware of direction of the swing, this keeps you centred. See www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and for $9.95 per month no contract, you will get way more for your dollars.
